Weekly Game Suggestions Thread - July 05, 2024

Looking for game suggestions? Have a backlog and don't know where to start next? This thread is for you!

Tips to get the best suggestions

  • Be detailed! If you're looking for a roguelike, say that. If your game must include zombies, you should probably mention that. The more detailed you are the better the recommendations will be.
  • Are you limited by PC specifications or a budget? That's all good stuff to include.

Should I get mass effect? Looking for a good story to get into but worried the shooting might put me off since I've never been into that genre that much, although I did love titanfall so who knows

Completing the trilogy is one of my most treasured gaming moments. If you have the time, I highly suggest playing through it (loved seeing my initial character progress through each game!)

Went ahead and bought it, it seems very fun and the story looks so good

You are in for an awesome time! My only two cents are ; certain decisions carry on from one game to another so always save before making big choices and don't let being a completionist slow ya roll.

Like scanning/visiting planets for that 100% completion can be done whenever, so you don't have to burn yourself out trying to get em all right away

o7!

sounds good, thanks!

Yes!!!! This game is a must buy and you can have teammates that do the shooting for you as well. You command a squad of 2 and you can slowdown/pause the game to set commands to your squad mates to attack, defend, rush, etc

Looking a mutiplayer/MMO browser based game. Preferably one with long term play (more than just a single session game)

Hi there, I am looking for a modern FPS with strong RPG elements to it as I have been playing Disgaea heavily that I suddenly want to try a shooter based RPG.

u/blanetrain Jul 07 '24

Cyberpunk is probably the most modern and recent. Then there's fallout, borderlands, mass effect, deus ex

u/KaleidoArachnid Jul 07 '24

Thanks as those games sound like they could be fun, do I can give all of them a try.

Thanks in advance for ya'll help. I'm looking for stuff that runs on Windows.

CoD 4-like FPS game

I'm a big enthusiast of guns, but owning one in EU is tricky. I'm a big fan of CoD Modern Warfare and recent remaster of the series was pretty interesting. I also loved Battlefield 3 and 4. However, CoD is super-expensive nowadays and I don't want to pay so much for just a year of playing. Is there any other game that captures the semi-realistic feel, but has this type of arcade action like old CoD 4? I know there's BattleBit, but I tried it and it doesn't work for me with that minecraft graphics. Gameplay is fun, but I just don't know where I am most of the time. XDefiant - it's something that I checked out, but UI kills it for me and it has a lot of Fortnite vibes for me. I tried some more realistic sim shooters, but they are boring. I just want to shoot semi-realistic guns in an arcade action like CoD and Battlefied used to be. Preferably that doesn't lose playerbase after few months. Currently playing World of Tanks.

Story-driven games I could play with my wife

We're currently playing Dragon Age: Origins - what other games would you recommend that could fit into category of "feels like watching TV series, but interactive"? I've bought South Park the Stick of Truth on Steam Sale and I'm wondering what other titles we could explore together. We are into reading books together, but sometimes we want to break that up with something mindless and we already watched the good TV series.

Have you tried Insurgency:Sandstorm? It leans more on the sim side but it's reasonably easy to pick up and the action is pretty much non-stop. There's a good variety of weapons and everything is viable because the ttk is about as low as it can be. The playerbase is small but I've always found a match almost instantaneously.

  1. Not a ton of arena shooter to choose from, but I'd try The Finals (f2p) or pick up Battlefield 2042 for $6. I've really enjoyed both games and 2042 is in a good spot now.

  2. Mass effect remastered trilogy or the plague tale games would be worth looking at. Perhaps the 2 newer deus ex games could be good as well.

Insurgency Sandstorm and It Takes Two

CoD 4-like FPS game

If you're only looking at single-player, I found Homefront to feel the most like a CoD game outside of the CoD franchise. The sequel gets hate, and it's not as good, but it's not bad. However, its more like an urban Far Cry game.

Looking for another chill cleaning game that's first person POV other than Powerwash Simulator and House Flipper 2, and Sims games. Need something to do to turn my brain off in times of stress.

Big +1 to Hardspace: Shipbreaker if you like gravity and using it and lasers

i'm someone who has little experience in playing games of this genre and has no idea what game to start with since i want to try getting into it more. my extremely limit experience is literally the persona romance/ social links aspect and baldurs gate or mainstream games, and a house in the rift for NSFW games LOL. but when i did get into those aspects of the game i ended up really liking them and wanted them to be more fleshed out so i am asking for help/ recs :3 im on pc if that matters at all

What game would give you the most advantage for < 20 ms ping? I just got google fiber and get 1 ms ping to speedtest.net, I know your ping time depends on time to game server, but for close servers like Chicago I still get really low ping.

In which games would this be a noticeable advantage, say over people with 40-50 ms ping?

Older games or indies.

Few AAA from ~2020 onwards will be playable at 1080p even on the lowest settings (smooth 30fps). You'll have to drop down to 720p and maybe even use FSR, but the experience will be far from pleasant. Even earlier titles will struggle, GT 1030 is from 2016 (same as your CPU) and meant for office work. What you've bought is a repurposed office PC and the price reflects that (assuming you paid £200, £400 is a rip-off).

Basically, good graphics = probably not for this PC. Pixel art indies, anything from early 2010s or 2000s, sure.

You can always look up "<game name> GT 1030" on Youtube and you'll see videos with the settings and framerate shown.

If you want specific suggestions, narrow it down to genre. Otherwise consider Deus Ex (original and Human Revolution), Factorio, Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, Doom 2016, Stardew Valley, Mount & Blade Warband, Borderlands, Dishonored.

Do you have any recommendations on where to get a pc that’s around 400? That’s better than this one for games

2

u/Filipi_7 Tech Specialist Jul 06 '24

For £400 you're really limited to the second hand market. I can't give you specific parts because there are way too many combinations and the prices will be all over the place, so you'll have to do some research yourself.

Around a GTX 980 level of performance is reasonable for £400 (I think). Go here and look at the chart, it will show you how other cards stack up against a 980, you basically want something that's at least 100%, the higher the better.

As for the CPU, a rule of thumb is that the first digit in Intel's CPU number is the last digit of the year of release minus 1. So an i5-6600K, that's 6 - 1 = 5, which is 2015. i5-8600K would be 2017, and so on. In the same year, higher number = better. For AMD, only consider Ryzen CPUs as their older stuff (FX series) is very bad.

"Gaming" PC flippers on Ebay have a habit of using very old Intels (2000 and 3000 series) or AMD FX which you really don't want. Anything older than 6000 series is simply not enough for gaming in current year.

If second hand is out of the question, a PC with the 5600G APU is the closest you can get, and while you can build one for £400, prebuilts will be priced higher. It's anything between 10-100% faster than a 1030, very game dependent. You could also slot in a GPU later and get a huge improvement, either second hand or a budget card like RTX 3050 or RX 6500.

£600 can get you a solid entry-level machine that will be able to play anything, even at medium-ish settings, and while I'm aware that's a lot over your budget, consider saving up and building it when you're able.

1

u/Ok_Particular1382 Jul 06 '24

I can do a 600 build but I don’t trust myself making my own pc if yk what I mean

Have you watched any guides? It is not very difficult, when done step-by-step and consulting a guide/forum whenever a question arises, I think it can be done by anyone. Several high profile youtubers have great videos, like LinusTechTips (it's long because the first 38 mins is about choosing parts, and it covers different types of components which you won't be using in addition to the basics).

Anyway, for £600 you have a lot more options. This one, for example. Slower than the custom build I linked and I don't know how these no-name Amazon PCs fare in terms of build quality, aftermarket support, or bloatware, but for that price it's not bad. Huge improvement over a 1030 or 5600G.

https://alexdavispcs.co.uk/collections/gaming-pcs/products/ryzen-3-3200g-vega-8-gaming-pc I put a 16gb ram update , 1TB ssd upgrade, and windows 11 active

1

u/Filipi_7 Tech Specialist Jul 06 '24

3200G is slower than a 5600G, in-between it and 1030. It isn't terrible for £400 but it's still not quite a "gaming" PC. Although if second hand and building your own is out of the question, I'm not sure if you can find something better.

1

u/Ok_Particular1382 Jul 06 '24

Thanks for the Amazon recommendation, I think im going to get that one but I just seen one that peaked my interest because it is able to run many of the games I’m interested in playing for 100€ cheaper https://www.drmem.com/c9-b75-i7-3770-16gb-1050ti4g-1t-256g/

2

u/Filipi_7 Tech Specialist Jul 06 '24

It's okay for that price, I guess. There's a lot to be desired, like the CPU being from 2012 and practically unusable for modern games. Most in that list are either old or competitive/MMO which are often optimised for these kind of computers.

If those games are all you want and you don't mind low graphics, then it's fine. For comparison, the Amazon PC is around twice as fast.

Are you going to be using a 1080p monitor as well? A GTX 1650 will not handle 1440p.

1

u/Ok_Particular1382 Jul 07 '24

Yeah I’m gonna buy the Amazon one but I’m just wondering what games can it run?

2

u/Filipi_7 Tech Specialist Jul 07 '24

Anything. It's not about running games as practically any PC will launch any game, it's more about the framerates you get and at what settings. RX 6600 is an entry level card and it will handle pretty much anything at 1080p ~medium/high 60fps.
