Answered Same person harassing with a new account every day

Hi all-

I’m a new mod of a subreddit based on a podcast. There’s a user who posts harassing and threatening content daily. I ban them/remove their comments and posts, they make a new account, rinse and repeat multiple times every day. They always use the same avatar and are clearly the same person as they also reply to the modmail with similar messages, etc.

How can I get rid of this person for good? I tried “automations” but I don’t see any other way outside of keywords to block them from posting.

There’s gotta be a way to do this that I’m missing as a newbie to moderating a sub.

Thanks everyone for any help here. This person is a bit disruptive and irritating to the mod team.

I’m on iOS and can use desktop (Mac) as well.

Set up a minimum account age and karma requirement to participate.

Use your safety settings in mod tools to implement some other restrictions like the ban evasion filter.

In addition to this great advice, if you haven't reported the for ban evasion yet OP, you need to. If they keep engaging in ban evasion Reddit may shadow-ban them, or full-on ban them. If they continue to ban evade they will eventually be IP blocked (?) so they can't even make reddit acounts.

Excellent. I don’t know how to do this but I’m sure it’s a google-search away

No, they won't block IPs because these people use VPNs to get around the ban and they're not going to block a VPN.

Thank you for the correction. I thought there was some way they could permanently prevent repeat offenders from accessing the site?

Nope, even IP address bans would be circumventable with a VPN. They'd have to ban all of the VPNs. (This may or may not be right, it's my understanding.)

Report each new account for ban evasion. Admins will handle it.

I've had this happen. All you can do is block, report and not engage.

They will get bored eventually if you don't give them the lulz. IT took a couple of months in my case, but it eventually worked. (After about 200 accounts. No exaggeration)

Wow. Did you report them for ban evasion?

2

u/Biffingston Jul 19 '24

Every single one of the 200 accounts was banned.

Right but did Reddit admins get reports for them evading the bans and just not block their IP?

They told me they just used a VPN and signed up again.

There are lots of checks you can do.

Turn on crowd control and ban evasion.

In automod do checks for account age, subreddit karma, verified email. If they have to set up an email for each of their new accounts that will slow them down a little and maybe they'll get tired of the game faster.

You can flair ban their accounts as they are created. This way it may take them a while to notice that their posts aren’t posting. Again, you’re slowing them down a bit

When they do post do a silent removal. In modmail archive the modmail without muting.

The less you interact with them the better.
