Discussion Confidence raised by what you wear.

Quite recently. I have just got a chance to dress up for our company new yearā€™s party. The theme was anything old school.

Purely for fun, I dressed as one of those peaky blinders full overcoat thing. I can say that I managed to get everything on point including jewelry.

Now, I am not the kind of guy who really dress up (I prefer comfort over looks, so most of the time just plain polo and khakis). Also the weather in my country (south east asia) does not really allow you to dress up due to warm temperature.

Time passed. Party ended. I am back to my place and noticed that somehow I was feeling different? like people treated you differently ? Maybe I also act differently? I am not sure but I think it was something to do with how I did everything slower, longer stride, larger silhouette etc.

When I was having a conversation, I felt like they have the time to gaze around and checkout what I wear. The jewelry/ pocket watch / rings on several fingers etc. And it just felt casual.

I am not sure how to describe it maybe I have not yet crystallized my thoughts.

Although it was just a few hours but it got me thinking - people who dressed up and are happy with their outfits must really feel good with themseleves (like high rank general or a CEO etc). This is something worth striving for.

Maybe this is the sign that I should dress up a bit and have fun with jewelry stuffs. (Not overdress like thomas shelby in this era of course.) but you get my point

What are your stories and thoughts? :)

Discussion The Best Penny Loafers

I have been buying a pair of Cole Haan penny loafers every few years for 10+ years now. I am planning to buy a pair of loafers this spring and Iā€™m wondering if I should try something else. What is everyoneā€™s favorite penny loafer within the $300 price range of the Cole Haans?

Question How do you manage owning both smart and regular watches?

I was gifted a Coros Pace 3 and a Tissot Le Locle over Christmas. I'm in love with the looks of the Tissot, but I also love the functionality of the Coros. I've seen posts about Double Wristing, but I feel like that looks bad and was told as much by my wife when I tried it.

Does anyone have a good system for owning and wearing smart and regular watches?

Discussion Wonderful experience with New & Lingwood

ā€¢ Upvotes

I would normally never do this, but Iā€™ve seen posts on here with people complaining about their experience with a company, so I wanted to post the opposite. The company went out of their way to assist me, the least I could do is share my experience.

For quite some time now, Iā€™ve been on the hunt for a robe. Honestly, I saw the movie Only Lovers Left Alive and would have killed for the robe that Tom Hiddleston wore in that film. After finding out it was custom for that production, my search for an alternative led me to New & Lingwood. I believe it was actually a suggestion from this sub.

I had severe reservations about spending that much on a robe. I got one of their cheaper offerings, but still outside what I would typically budget for something of that nature.

Anyhow, I had numerous questions and the company responded to every email. They ensured I got the discount after my code failed. They even went so far to find a robe that I had my eye on that recently went out of stock.

The delivery speed was incredibly fast, especially considering the holiday season.

And the robeā€¦.well I am not upset about spending the money. Itā€™s beautiful. It feels amazing and I can tell that this is actually a quality product.

There is another robe on their website I have my eyes on, but that will have to wait for some time, maybe next yearā€™s bonus šŸ˜†.

But if you are in the market for a luxury robe, give New and Lingwood a look.

Question Please help me! Need long trousers for hot summers

I'm (25M) starting my first proper full time job in February and I really struggle with summer heat. I've also been struggling finding long trousers which don't overheat me easily and I've been getting frustrated while researching as there seems to be a giant stinking shitpile of garbage clothing out there.

The pants have to be breathable, yet classy. I need to be able to come across as professional. Colourise they can be anything, but my style would permit mostly beige, sand, black, navy, off white or similar colours. They absolutely cannot be shorts (sadly!).

I currently reside in Germany, which is also where I will order the items to. Please help me, I'm struggling hard. I appreciate any suggestions regarding brands, stores, specifics, fabrics, style tips and alike. Thank you so much in advance

Question Wearing good boots in a country environment? How nice can I look for dirty daily living?

I'm new to buying "nice" footwear. I've worn Ariat distressed square toes for probably ten years and this year decided I'd like to look a little more stylish, which led me up a step to Florsheim, Johnston and Murphy, Thursday, etc. I'm looking at something like a plain chelsea, but even something as fancy as a laced captoe with zipper side.

The question: There doesn't seem to be a clear-cut distinction between "dress boots" and just nice boots. They ALL look nicer than what I wear.I love how a lot of these nicer boots look. They seem sooo nice. That's the problem. I will wear them out to let out chickens when the yard is a little muddy, when grass is recently cut, etc. I live in the country, might walk down the road a ways. Do folks wear these "nicer" boots daily in these settings?

I guess I'm trying to convince myself that its okay to buy nice boots and for them to be dusty and a little scuffed for the most part. Otherwise I'll never buy anything nice. I'll only have "work boots" from the tractor store. Do folks buy these nicer brands and "wear them hard"? I don't mean digging muddy ditches, but daily country style living?

Discussion Need help with 100% cotton shirt

I just got 2 t-shirts from Mc2 saint Barth. Got a white and pink one. Both 100% organic cotton. Both came out of the package super firm, sharp, and felt amazing to the touch. I wore the white one, then threw it in the washer and dryer (with a heavy load if that makes a difference). Ended up drying it about 3 separate times in one go because the heavier items wouldn't dry. It came out way softer. I wasn't sure so I had my family members blindly test the fabric and said the pink one, which still hasn't been washed or dried, was way firmer and tighter, as I thought. How do I restore the white ones firmness and how do I "save" the pink one before I wash it?

Question Where to Buy Nice Jeans in Less Common Sizes?

Iā€™m a 6ā€™1ā€ male who is very thin (125 lbs). Iā€™ve had limited success in the last few years buying pants and jeans, the only ones I own that feel great to wear (I like quite slim, but not very tight skinny jeans) are a pair of 511 slim jeans from Leviā€™s in 29/34 size and a few pairs of dress pants that were heavily tailored for me. Iā€™ve tried other Leviā€™s Jeans (Iā€™ve only ever found one color that I donā€™t really love in the size that works for me) and pairs from Bonobos, Warp+Weft and Amazon and I just canā€™t find something that doesnā€™t feel baggy in the back or isnā€™t too shortā€”Iā€™m scared to try most places because the 29 inch waists typically only go up to a 32 inch inseam and those generally feel too short. Iā€™m willing to spend quite a bit of money for two or three pairs of dark blue jeans that I love wearing and will lastā€”any ideas of where to look?

Question Hoodies with zip up front pockets

I never heard of a hoodie with zip up front pockets before but I recent bought a Lacoste zip up hoodie and when I received it in the mail I was surprised to find that the front pockets were zip ups. There was no mention of it in the pictures of where I purchased it from. How common are hoodies with front zip up pockets ?

Question Henleys that don't skimp on sleeves

ā€¢ Upvotes

I'm looking to buy a few 100% cotton henleys, and my main requirement is that the sleeves aren't cut too short. I'm a size small that needs a ~34" sleeve. I typically wear Gustin, but have been disappointed in their knits/t shirts so looking for something new.

Question Footwear for a city tour

Hi everyone,

A recurring problem I'm currently having is selecting what to wear on my feet when I'm on holiday doing a city trip. I usually walk around a lot (20k+ steps) and I find my usual boots quite uncomfortable after a while. I would love to avoid using running shoes, I'd prefer something that's not downright disgusting, sooo, the question: what do you usually wear when you know there's going to be a lot of walking?

Discussion Have no non-athletic clothes; need help building wardrobe from scratch

ā€¢ Upvotes

I wear formal clothes (think suit and tie) to work but am in dire straits in my personal wardrobe. I need help figuring out how to approach one. Budget is flexible but around $10-15k per year by default.

Right now, I wear athletic clothes (T-shirt, shorts) all the time and maybe throw on jeans. Otherwise, I'm in a suit. My only sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, etc. are free, branded ones I have gotten from events over the years.

I am at a loss at how to even build a wardrobe or start developing my sense of style. Any suggestions given the below?

I cannot be trusted to pick out clothes. The only compliments I have ever received on style have been about clothing someone else had given to me. I am committed to developing my own style over time, but I need hand-holding at the beginning.

I'm not looking to build a "basic wardrobe." Most days, I am in work clothes and then spend a quiet evening at home; the wardrobe is more for weekends and going out. So I do not need super versatile pieces that can generate tons of different outfits. I want specific clothes that look particularly good on me, even if they only work for 3 outfits or something.

I want to really understand what looks good on me. What colors work best, what patterns to look for or stay away from, what size and type of necktie knots look best (and which collars work best with those), cuffs or no cuffs, how to dress for my size (I'm short), considerations with short sleeve v. long sleeve, french cuff v. barrel cuff, all of that.

I don't have tons of time to shop around and try different stores/brands. I work a lot and travel a decent amount, including on weekend and with not much predictability.

The resources on this sub have been helpful but don't really seem to be quite what I am looking for. Should I try free personal styling at Nordstrom or Saks and pick up some stuff there? Look somewhere else? Thanks!

Discussion White leather sneakers with different silhouette than typical white sneaker (not a flat sole like Common Projects, Stan Smiths)

ā€¢ Upvotes

Hey guys, the Stan smith/common projects type of shoe is just so dull to me, I think theyā€™re clean but for me theyā€™re so lifeless shape wise. Iā€™m not a fan of flat shoes except Nike Killshots

Yet I need a shoe thatā€™s more formal than my Air Force 1s. So no recommending Killshot etc. I need to go up a level in formality.

But everything looks the same. I like the Alexander Mcqueens oversized sneaker. They have a unique silhouette, not super flat like vans.

Looking for unique shapes like this thatā€™s cheaper than Alexander Mcqueens, and not a blatant rip off of them

Question Best Country To Shop For Short Man?

I'm 5'5" Asian from North America. One of the biggest issues I encounter is size... The local clothes are big for me. I usually am XS.

I'm looking to upgrade my wardrobe and travel internationally.

Which country/city is best for short men to find fashionable, quality, and affordable clothes?

Question Progress capsule wardrobe, what do you think?

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I posted a message on this subreddit asking for advice on building a capsule wardrobe. Thanks to all your helpful responses, I identified my colors and reviewed my current wardrobe to decide what to keep.

Iā€™ve discovered Iā€™m a ā€œdeep Autumnā€ in terms of colors and chose the following palette:

  • Dark neutrals:Ā Black/espresso and navy
  • Light neutrals:Ā Olive and cream
  • Accent colors:Ā Blue, brown, and cinnamon

I created an overview of the first draft for my capsule wardrobe, which is meant to work for all seasons. Pieces with a red "x" indicate items I donā€™t yet own (see link for image).

While Iā€™m happy with the initial setup, I canā€™t help but feel it looks a bit dark overall. Do you think the color balance works, or should I add more lighter or brighter pieces?

As for the style, Iā€™m still figuring out what works best for me. Iā€™m leaning towards something semi-professional with minimalist and casual influences, but Iā€™d love your input on that too.

Thank you for your adviceā€”I really appreciate it!

Discussion 100% Cotton (Or Natural Fiber) Custom Ugly Christmas Sweaters

I'm looking for an ugly Christmas sweater that does not use synthetic fibers. I'm specifically looking for a Lord of the Rings themed one but every single one I like is 100% plastic. Where is the best place to find one?

Company complaint J.Crew E-Gift Cards - Bad implementation

I have bought multiple items this year, online and from their stores, so I am good with their clothes and products. With that in mind, I sent an e-gift card online to my brother for this birthday. The order was placed around 8:00 AM in the morning.

I get an email the next day morning at 8:05 AM stating that they needed some information to complete the order. I call the number they posted in the email and the agent simply wanted to verify the recipient's email address and billing address. No issues with the card or anything.

Result - the order was approved and sent the next afternoon! The customer rep could only say "I am sorry for the inconvenience caused", with no explanation on why they waited 24 hours. I feel foolish now, as people would wonder if I forgot their birthday.

Has anyone faced such delays before?

Question Where can I find ā€œsmart casualā€ pants?

I have been wanting to buy pants to wear when going out that are not jeans nor suit pants. The texture of chino pants has not been feeling very pleasant and Iā€™m struggling to find another ā€œtypeā€ of pants that looks good. I think the pants worn by the guy in this video might be what I want but I have no idea what to search to find something similar. Thanks for the help!

Discussion Alternatives for LP Spagna/Zegna Conte (posh standing-collar blazers)

What are these posh, standing collar blazers called? I tried one on and fell so absolutely in love and so it's going to be my sinful spending this coming New Year. And since I don't really want to blow the bank, what are some good quality (emphasis on quality) alternatives that I can look at?
