Question Justified like Novel.

Post image

What are your recommendations?

This is very similar to justified. I feel the writer created new characters based on Raylen, the Bennetts, etc then shuffled them around changed times locations and genders.

Which I love! With a lot of research I found a book like Justified! Ever read it?

If you want true understanding of Harlan, read “They Say in Harlan County” by Alessandro Portelli. That book I did a grad thesis on, and it really opened my eyes to this series in a deeper base of how those people interacted. Highly recommend.

If you want more like Justified try reading books by Elmore Leonard. The Justified series is one of the few video experiences that get Elmore Leonard right. He was an amazing writer.

Leonard is such a snappy writer.

I think Out of Sight was pretty good. Not exactly Leonard but it definitely got "Female Raylan" Karen Goodall pretty well down. Shame it's J-Lo but I think it's gotta be among her best work.

Elmore Leonard actually liked that movie. I won't watch it because of Jennifer Lopez. Did you mean Karen Sisco since that is the character that Lopez played? There was an excellent TV series named Karen Sisco, unfortunately it only lasted one season. I think Jackie Brown may be the best movie version of his work. That makes sense since he inspired Tarantino's work on Pulp Fiction.

Justified, and the character of Raylan, is based on short stories and novels by Elmore Leonard. The show is based on the short story "Fire in the hole" Other books that have Raylan in them are the books Pronto (debut of Raylan) and Riding the Wrap.

Other books by Elmore Leonard that I personally enjoy are:

Out of the Sight: A bank robber escapes from prison and after meeting the US Marshall after him keeps thinking of her.

La Brava: Retired Secret Service agent living in Miami helps his landlord's friend, a retired movie star, deal with two thugs.

City Primeval: Det Rayond Cruz hunts down the Oklahoma wild man that is cusing problems in 1980s Detroit

La Brava is so, so good.

They should do a City Primeval film. One that's faithful to the book.

Daniel Woodrell novels have a Harlan feel, even though they're set in the Ozarks. There's also generally no Raylans to be found.

Honestly, True Grit by Charles Portis, while not identical, has similar wit and snappy dialogue.
