Message disappeared

Earlier today I received a notification that I had a message from someone on reddit (I was expecting the message, this isn't a spammer situation). The notification displayed some of the text so I know the message existed. However, when I clicked the notification the message was gone. Is this a known error and is there a way to access that message?

The user might have deleted their message.

My understanding is that that is not possible. When I go to my messages I don't have any option to delete
