I'd seen actress Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio long before Grimm -- like, in the courtroom drama "Class Action" with the great Gene Hackman, or in "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves" with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman -- but I completely forgot that she was in Scarface, the legendary 1983 Brian de Palma movie about Cuban-American gangster Tony Montana and the 80s drug/cocaine trade.
I watched Scarface again for the first time in many years tonight, and I almost fell out of my chair when youthful "Kelly Burkhardt" appears as the important character, Gina Montana, Tony's baby sister. I'd completely forgotten she was in it!
Mary Elizabeth is pretty stunning and sexy (see photo #1) in the movie, and her typical, trademark curls are huge with an extra big 80s-style blowout (see photo #2).
(No wonder some viewers thought that Tony Montana was incestuously half in love with Gina; he certainly obsesses over her a lot.)
Photos 3 and 4 from after 1983 and Scarface but are still from the 1980s. She's gorgeous there, too, with a blinding smile.
Photo #5 is from the 1990s, I think.
Photo #6 is her as Mama Grimm, circa 2012 or 2013.
Photos 7 and 8 are of actress Olga Votsis playing a young Kelly Burkhardt (or Mary Elizabeth) on Grimm on the night that Kelly sent Nick away with his Aunt Marie.
Coincidentally, I just re-watched this episode recently. (Synchronicity, S3, e17.) And I was struck by how much Olga Votsis' voice resembles that of MEM. I mean, almost identical! (Maybe MEM did a voice-over?? The voices seem that identical!)
I was also struck by how much the actress looked like young Angelina Jolie and, more importantly, by how well the Grimm Hair and Makeup department nailed the trademark Mastrantonio hairstyle, particularly the 1980s version of it. Nice job, Grimm crew!
Since Mama Grimm is too tough, serious, and deadly to ever smile on the show, I thought I'd share photos of the actress who plays her so that you can see her gorgeous smile and how beautiful she is. Or was. When not decapitating people that is, lol.
PS - I bet some younger Redditors have never seen MEM from back in the day, so you might want to watch some of her other movies. (Alan Rickman is awesome in Prince of Thieves and is reason alone to watch it!)
