Registering with partner as a couple. How serious is it?

I am thinking of registering as a couple with my girlfriend in the city of Geneva.

The reason is that this would allow me to put her (at no cost) under the health insurance plan that I receive from my employer, and I would also get a raise of about 700chf/month.

My fear is that I do not understand how serious this step is.

For context, we have been together only for less than one year, so, things like marriage, shared finances and children are completely off the table, and, at the moment, I don't even plan of getting rid of one of our accomodations to live full time together.

Would there be any dangers for me if we registered as a couple?

Would this complicate filing for taxes?

Telecom service providers - temp & permanent

Upvotes

My family and I are shifting to Geneva in the new year. We have a B Permit. How do I get a CH number immediately upon arrival? These could well be temp and prepaid so that I can use the phone immediately. We would atleast need 2/3 numbers + days. Thank you

Making friends Annecy / Geneve

How do you think it is to make friends in Geneva.

I am actually considering moving to Annecy, not Geneva but I anticipate having to use Geneva for a social life also.

I am male homosexual with my French partner but I know that how "gay friendly" a place is, is not an indicator of whether or not I can actually meet other gay guys who have their head screwed on right.

And I want to make friends with everyone around my age of 37.

And yeah I can speak French but the words don’t come fluently and automatically.

Airport French / Swiss side

Upvotes

Hi all,

In a couple of weeks I'm going to ski in Morzine with my family. I see there is a possibility to take a direct bus from Geneva airport to the ski station.

The day before I have to be in Lyon for work so I was thinking to:
1. Fly to Geneva Airport from my home country (EU country)

  1. Hire a car to drive to Lyon & back the next day

  2. Drop of the car at Geneva Airport and take the bus to Morzine.

I'm a bit confused about the airport having a French and Swiss side. As my business is only in France, I don't know how everything works

A. Can I exit and enter the airport on the French side?

B. Is the bus on the French side?

C. Do i hire the car on the French os Swiss side and car I cross the border with a hire car (for, Hertz)?

I have a valid passport so I can cross the border if needed;

Apartment Search / Recherche D'appartement

Upvotes

Whilst I've collected a bunch of helpful info provided by other posts. So firstly, THANK YOU!

I have some questions for your kind input.

My situation: I will be relocating to Geneva in February or March. I am 29 y.o. I speak French. I have a C permit. I am looking for a 1-person studio/apartment under 1900 CHF incl utilities in the centre or not too far.

<< WHAT WE GATHERED >> through several posts about the topic of relocating to Geneva in this group:

A) It i's going to be difficult to find an apartment

B) Geneva is boring

<< QUESTIONS >>

1) Any successful experiences or happy stories you want to share about your relocation to Geneva?

2) Any good agents I should contact for some help?

3) I have the Flatfox, Homegate and Immobilier apps. Glocals.ch was also recommended. Any other platforms?

4) Any locals or expats actually enjoy living in Geneva? Your favourite things about Geneva? :-)

I appreciate the raw and honest posts in this group but surely there are some people with positive comments that can also make me feel better about moving to Geneva! Right?!

Coming to Geneva for a 1 year postdoc research. What should be my budget?

Hello! I am a PhD researcher in a very specific field: ornithology (the study of birds), coming to Geneva in a few months on a postdoc research project to study beautiful Swiss water birds.

One big advantage is that I will pay 0 chf for accommodation!! I was lucky that my family knows a person from Geneva who my dad helped 20 years ago with their research, and now they have agreed to let me live in their studio for 1 year completely rent-free. I will only have to pay the bills (electricity and internet)

My salary comes from an international research project fund and it is 2800 EUR (2600 CHF) netto. The salary comes into my international bank account (not the Swiss one) so I will not pay any taxes. If I do have to pay any Swiss taxes, they will be refunded to me from the project. The project will also pay for my health insurance for one year, another big cost that I don't have to worry about.

So, my question is, really, will I be able to live comfortably on 2600 CHF given the situation that my accommodation, taxes and health insurance will be taken care of?

How much should I budget for groceries (I do eat a lot of meat, chicken, fish, etc.)? Bills? Mobile plan? Eating out in a nice place once a week? Maybe a pair of jeans every 2 months? Maybe a modest weekend trip to someplace nearby once a month?

For some context, I am single, 31 years old, don't own a car, no expensive hobbies (well, my hobby is my job LOL). I lived in some of the most expensive places on earth such as Singapore on a salary much, much higher than this one, but I also did a lot of nature conservation voluntary work for peanut money in other parts of the world. I am easily adaptable person but I also wouldn't want to suffer too much.

Anything you can share that can help me get some clarity would be amazing! Thanks a lot!

Palais des Nations: How to Visit It?

Hello, I am from Brazil. I am very passionate about international affairs and I have plans to visit Geneva by the end of January. I want to visit some historical places and I would love to visit the Palais des Nations. However, I took a look at the UN website and it is not possible to visit it alone. I can only book a group visit tour. Do you know someone who works for the UN who could help me to visit the UN headquarters or even get a ticket to visit it by myself? Can I get any credentials with someone? If I contact the Brazilian embassy, would it help me somehow? What are other historical places in Geneva that are worth a visit?

Kind regards,

Anyone with Experience Living in Foyers as a Student?

Hi! I'm an international student who will be working as a UN intern in Geneva for a semester next year. I'm specifically looking at staying at Foyer International, Foyer St. Justin, Foyer L'accueil, or Home St. Pierre due to their locations. Has anyone stayed at any of these places and can comment on their experience? There's not many reviews on Google/TripAdvisor, especially for Foyer International.

How Long to Receive the Residence Permit C after Biometrics? // Délai d’obtention de permis C après la biométrie ?

Hello,

I have a question for those who have transitioned from a Residence Permit B to a Residence Permit C. After completing the biometric process, how long does it typically take to receive the new permit? My appointment is scheduled for next week, and my Residence Permit B expired this week.

Thank you in advance for your responses!

———

Bonjour,

Also sorry if this is a stupid question but it says on le zoo's Instagram story that there's a theme for the outfit, is that followed by people? Will I be ok if I pull up in a normal outfit?

Vivre avec 80k annuel?

Salut !

Merci beaucoup!

Moving from London,UK with kids!

Dear Geneva Community,

Looking forward to your kind perspective as we try to make the right decision for our kids and family. We relocated from Princeton, NJ to London, UK 3 years ago where our kids have been attending to the American school in London. We simply chose this school as we thought our assignments here would be for 3 years and we would relocate again to US and back to US public school system. So, we didn't want to interrupt their education per se. We are now moving to Geneva, Switzerland through corporate opportunity, which we are grateful and humbled for it. We were also leaning towards Ecolint and weren’t considering local schools simply because we don’t know how long our assignments will be. My main worry was that the kids have been on American curriculum all their life and if we put them to the local school system ,which I understand is excellent, and our companies yank us back to US or some where else in the world, they could potentially struggle integrating back to another school system if that makes sense. My boys will be 7th and 10th grade(13 and 15 years old) when we move to Geneva in the Summer of '25. Particularly, tender years for our older one as he will graduate from High school in Geneva and getting ready for College soon. We are also US citizens and I am curious if they would find it difficult to integrate with the local students there particularly due to language barriers and lack of prior exposure to Swiss education system. They are both kind and respectful kids. What would be advice of the fellow Swiss citizens there? Should we take this chance? My youngest one’s second language is Spanish and the oldest is French but both intermediate levels. I guess I am mostly looking for encouragement from you :)

Many thanks for your perspective and time in advance!

Where to find cardboard boxes?

Hi! I have been trying to find cardboard boxes for sending a package abroad, but all I can find are moving boxes (which won’t work because they have holes on the sides). Do you know where can I go to buy/get a couple boxes? I need something that I can go and get as I don’t have time for receiving a package.

Seven hours layover in Geneva with kids

Hi!

We have a seven hours layover this Sunday, fam with two kids 1 and 6, from 11 am.

Either we can stay at the airport or leave it and get out to the city.

I’d love to find a nice cheese fondue and my daughter would love a toblerone fondue.

What would you suggest us to do?

Are there any fun markets in Geneva on a Sunday?

Or better just to chill at the airport? :)

Connection time

I'm flying in on the last ever 757 flight to Geneva on the 5th jan and flying back on the same plane back to MAN. Is this connection time going to be possible with 1 hour connection hand baggage only and boarding pass already issued. Would I need to go through passport control or does it normally let you straight into the gate area?

A day in Geneva: Ideas?

We're doing a little day trip/ there and back and decided upon Geneva for a random trip tomorrow.

Was wondering what ideas there were on this sub for a day in the city?

So far we want to visit the lake as well as a trip down to CERN (I study Physics and I'm keen).

Aside from that, I'm a little stumped as to what else. We go down tomorrow morning early and come back in the night.
