This is the Friendly Friday Thread.

Negative or even snarky attitudes are not welcome here. This is a thread to ask questions and hopefully get some friendly advice.

This format is used in a ton of other subreddits and we think it can work here. Anyway, thanks for participating!

Please hit the report button if someone is being mean and we'll remove those comments, or the person if necessary.

One plant - many different flower colours

Just wondered why I occasionally sometimes get different coloured flowers on one plant. Mutation? Random genetics? Just lucky? Included pics of my sweet williams and marigolds.

I'm thinking of trying to live off my garden for a year because I'm tired of being reliant on groceries need some advice and ideas

I have fruit covered i have about 20 types of fruit growing and I will be foraging for a few more kinds,

in terms of vegetables I will probably have enough to survive off in planning to grow 15 types of vegetables a few different varieties of some of them,

in terms of nuts i can forage them and i plan to eat some everyday and I'll grow sunflower seeds,

when it comes to grains i plan to grow flour corn,

and with meat and eggs i have two chickens for eggs and will get quail for meat and eggs.

I'm planning to eat only foraged and home grown food for a year starting in ether June or July I want to do this to see if I can and I'm planning to document it on YouTube I just want to try and not come out of it in bad health.

my gole is to eat a better diet than I have now witch I feel isn't going to be hard I'm obese and I don't eat many vegetables or organic anything.

If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it I'm in the planning and prep stage of this right now.

Need advice… how do I proceed

Upvotes

I hired someone who built this garden bed for me. I know most of what he planted there but not the exact varieties. He was supposed to come and maintain it for me but he’s closing his business and leaving me with this. I have barely any idea of how to take care of this and seems overwhelming when I start reading about it. Working on finding someone else but in the meantime, is there anything I should be prioritizing that I can do myself?

Help. Roots broke off while replanting.

I'm new to gardening and plants. A month ago, I bought a red pine plant kit, which contained a small pot and some seeds. After 20+ days, one of the seeds finally germinated.

While replanting the seedling, the roots were quite fragile and broke off. Is there any hope? What can I do now if there's a chance the seedling won't die? Appreciate any advice!

Here's a pic of it after replanting, I tried using the soil to prop up the plant.

What's the most difficult plant for you to grow that's supposed to be easy?

For me, it's zucchini/yellow squash. I can grow nice, large zucchini plants but spend the entire season babying them for little reward. Between needing to hand pollinate and fighting off pests and powdery mildew, I'm not sure if it's worth all the effort in my case.

If I do try again I'll look into parthenocarpic varieties. Varieties with resistance to powdery mildew don't help much in my area, which is coastal.

What nightmarish creatures have you encountered in your garden?

I was redoing part of my garden and had few of those. I was wondering if other people also see creepy crawlers when working in the garden.

So far I had scorpions, various spiders, bull ants and blue ant wasps.

How do I know which leaves I am supposed to trim?

I feel like my garden cube is getting way too crowded, and I heard that taking off some leaves is beneficial for flowering and the flowers are just starting to develop. How do I know which leaves to remove?
