I’m not an artistic person - but decided to paint a mural in our game room. It’s almost done. Needs additional coats and lines redrawn.

Props for including Duke. Next time, I'd ask on an art learning sub for some composition help while planning. The most important thing is you like it

Careful Nintendo might have their lawyers come after you and make you take that down

u/Salerk Oct 06 '24 edited Oct 06 '24
First they will patent drawing on the wall as they once did that and its belongs to them now, then they will call the lawyers

u/sdemat Oct 06 '24
You know - that was the first thought I had when I drew the logo. I’m gonna post this and Nintendo will send me a cease and desist.

The whole piece is lacking coherence… It feels like you just started painting symbols in one corner and just expanded from there. I think the “Nintendo” logo should probably be centered as it’s the first thing people’s eye will be drawn to. The actual art itself looks pretty great and most of the characters are really on model, but yeah, a planning phase would have done a lot of justice here.

u/sdemat Oct 06 '24
I did have a plan for the most part. I tried to separate each of the major consoles - Xbox on the left, PS on the middle and Nintendo on the right. But I think there were easier Nintendo choices to draw more so than the others - so that kinda took over. On my papers it was more spread out. The characters in top of the Nintendo logo were actually to the right of Donkey Kong. But I ran out of wall space.

u/xChryst4lx Oct 06 '24
I actually think knowing that makes it a lot more cohesive, but i think the lack of discernable foreground/midground/background really hurts it and also the fact that some of the images kinda break the percieved 'boundaries'. Like for me the Tetris thing looks kinda out of place because its so disconnected from the rest.
Otherwise still a great work and I hope you love it!

There's too much going on here and the composition isnt well thought out.
Could have just got like 3 or 4 stylized posters of your favorite games... But if you're happy then cool ig?

Most of them look pretty alright, but that Fox is terrible ngl. He looks like Howard the Duck in a fox costume.
1
u/sdemat Oct 06 '24
Yea. He’s not my favorite. Originally was gonna have him head on with the green site over his eye but couldn’t get it right. So I shoehorned him in last minute.

u/PurpleGuy197 Oct 06 '24
No quake?

u/sdemat Oct 06 '24
You know - I thought about that after the fact. I think I have some space below I could add it.

u/ShyngShyng Oct 06 '24
That's awesome for someone with little exp, dude!
Some tips for retouching or the next time:
Use More saturated colors as Base/Main stuff. Make Mario shine.
Use Base forms like ovals and rectangulars for sketches, makes your forms sturdier
Alternatively use cutouts like sprayers
Good luck and good doing Mate

This doesn’t look good at all. Quit while ur a head or just hire a professional

You're not an artistic person, I agree. This looks like a teenager notebook full of random stickers.

you need a designer to help you get a more consistent look. hit me up. I'll help you out if you think you want to redo it better

Fuck the haters. Solid ass mural and great job but am I crazy or just been away too long cause I always thought Rockstar had a gold star. Granted I could be mixing it up with the energy drink

u/sdemat Oct 07 '24
It’s a work in progress - one of the characters from borderlands. He was a last minute addition

u/janesy24 Oct 07 '24
Your best bet is to outline all the images with a thick black either a posca paint pen or similar. It’ll make them all pop. I’d also suggest maybe repainting the Mario brothers skin in a darker pink to make them a bit more pronounced. Otherwise it’s your wall and you’ve done great for someone who self identifies as not an artist
2
u/sdemat Oct 07 '24
Yup. Originally everything was outline in black - but after adding paint a lot of the lines are undefined. I have to go back after with my black paint pen and re-line everything.

Until I read the title and zoomed in, I at first thought it was a whole bunch of like stickers or those heat sticker plastic things for walls BUT ANYWAY "a product" slapped on the wall overlapping and such.
But it looks better and more coherent the longer I look. I like it a lot overall.

u/joeoconnell Oct 08 '24
This is awesome. What a great way to represent all the stuff you love! The most fun I had with art and drawing (I would also say I'm not particularly artistic) was this kind of growing collage vibe, especially when it represents you personally. Banjo and Pikmin are my faves for sure!
P. S. Don't put yourself down, plenty of proof that you're very artistic right here. Painting on walls is so much harder than sketching in a book.

It really looks like a bunch of stickers just kinda, fell out? Idk, all the characters and symbols looks great individually, but together it really looks like a mess.
4
u/Shronkydonk Oct 06 '24
People are saying it’s disorganized or whatever, but shit, as someone who also doesn’t have any art training and definitely wouldn’t consider the balance or things like that, I think it looks great. The characters look almost like they could be official. The Nintendo characters look awesome. Certainly better than I could do.
3
u/sdemat Oct 06 '24
Thanks! Eh - I don’t mind the criticism. I painted it more as something for my game room - not really caring about how disorganized or organized it is. My goal was painting my favorite characters and logos!

There are comments about focal points and centering which i would usually agree with - I'm insane about symmetry and margins - but i feel like the chaos kind of works for you here. Just unbridled video games everywhere, no restrictions.
Furthermore, the characters and logos themselves look great. Not much jank at all, if anywhere really. They all pretty much look official, which is tough to get right.
Excited to see the final product. I feel like the right background could really tie this all together nicely.

What is the red white octagon logo for? I saw it on sf6 yesterday and couldn't figure it out
3
u/Deazul Oct 06 '24
Umbrella from resident evil
2
u/TruthParadox_Real Oct 06 '24
That makes sense why I saw it on SF6 then. Since both are developed by Capcom
2
u/Deazul Oct 06 '24
Totes. Is Jill Valentine in SF6 or something? I haven't played fighting games since Third Strike.
2
u/TruthParadox_Real Oct 06 '24
Unfortunately no, but that would be cool. She is in Marvel vs Capcom 2 and 3. Also Third Strike is so much fun, I was just playing it yesterday

Careful, do you have a licence agreement with Nintendo to use their logo like that?

OP claims they’re not an artistic person. Gets some decent artistic work done. Gets roasted on some details.
Dear OP, the only way to get better is to start something. You did pretty decent for a first time and I’m sure you already know things that could have gone better, or you will probably end up being annoyed by them the longer you have to look at that wall.
That’s fine. You did a pretty decent job and you have every right to be proud of it. For the next one, maybe submit the rough so people can pinpoint stuff to change before you actually paint it.

I probably would've looked into printing out decals or something if you wanted something more polished. But hey, if you had fun doing it and are happy with the result, then there's no wrong way to do it.

The choccobo, psycho, and Spyro are all particularly well done. Great job!

u/FuriKMJ Oct 07 '24
It's a little cluttered for me personally, but I think it's a nice and fun thing you did for yourself with contributions from your wife. I'm sure it took a lot of effort to finish it, so props to you!

u/DDG_Dillon Oct 07 '24
I think the art is good, should have added a border first and filled it in so it looked cleaner and more like a painting/picture. This just looks like you sticker-bombed your wall and is pretty chaotic.

This wall looks like it was the result of a video game brainstorming session with too much coffee! Otherwise, the concept is nice 🤪

I appreciate this on a few levels. Number one being that there is no fan boy nonsense here. It's just an homage to gaming in general.

I had a very rough outline that I transferred onto the wall with a projector and then free handed the rest. Thank you!

"I'm not an artistic person"
Proceeds to show a 20+ game mural while respecting each game's art style
On a serious note though, I think it looks great but as others told you already, some logos are too close to each other and they overlap. For example the FEDRA logo/text seems a bit butchered

u/not_a_moogle Oct 06 '24
Oh, I'm envious, and I have just the wall to do this as well. If only I had any talent.

Dude this is awesome!!
The Duke Nukem is funny as hell - still looks good but has a MAD TV vibe to him.

u/sdemat Oct 06 '24
I wanted to find one of the more ridiculous ones of him to put on the wall - so he wouldn’t be confused with Wesker from resident evil.

Buster Sword holes are wrong and Master Chief is holding a non existent weapon. You have the stock of the AR and the body of what looks like the shotgun?
0
u/Irontwigg Oct 07 '24
This is the definition of a clusterfuck. Its an odd mix of logos and characters with seemingly no planned layout. I dont like it, but the art itself is pretty good. Its all over the place though in terms of composition.

Looks like 28 counterstrike players sprayed game logo's on the wall
