God of War 2018 had me take the most screenshots I've taken in a game and this one is my favorite

u/SenorDangerwank Oct 05 '24
Bro same. Him fucking looming in the distance all the time and watching you was both fucking awesome and terrifying. So big.

These games are a journey. I'm finishing Ragnarok right now, almost completing 100% of content naturally.
I loved SkillUp analogy about these games... God of War is like Kill Bill or Lord of the Rings, sure people have their favorite movies, but these movies will be remembered in the future by being singular master pieces.
God of War 2018 and Ragnarok are the perfect single player experience for me, good stuff.

I think the original is substantially better (though Rag is a solid game I enjoyed). Better pacing, more original of course, playing as the Boy was kinda meh for me, and the OG Valkyrie battlers were visually, mechanically, and narratively far better than.. whatever the boring generic monsters that replaced them were supposed to be.
23
u/guilhermefdias Oct 05 '24
I agree, the Berserkers don't come even close to the Valkyries, lore and mechanics, but they had to do something, right?
Some fights are good tho, end the armor is the best in the game.

Reading Reddit I feel like I’m the only one that enjoyed Ragnarok more than 2018. Sure you could say that it’s more flawed but it also does SO much stuff better than 2018, from the combat, to the enemies, to the realms, I would even go as far as to say that the characters are better too, I could barely stand Atreus in the first game, in Ragnarok he’s actually kinda interesting. People seem to hate the Atreus sections as well, but I honestly enjoyed them, they were a nice change of pace from endlessly slashing enemies as Kratos, it helped that those sections had very interesting story segments, the Asgard chapter with Atreus was super cool imo, working for the enemy, experiencing in depth their motivations and perspective, very few games do that. 2018 got a bit boring after a while, I always thought that it had too much filler content. And most of it was repetitive, the copy pasted bosses also didn’t help. 100%ing Ragnarok was a way more pleasant experience to me than 100%ing 2018.

u/Wes_Warhammer666 Oct 06 '24
The story for the first one was better, but everything else about Ragnarok felt better.
Same with Horizon ZD and Forbidden West, actually. If each of the originals had the QoL improvements from their sequels then they would be undisputed masterpieces for all time.
6
u/Thedrunkenchild Oct 06 '24
The story as a whole I agree, but the character moments I think are better in Ragnarok.
5
u/Wes_Warhammer666 Oct 06 '24
Agreed. Especially stuff with Kratos accepting Atreus becoming his own man and Thor's struggles with his family. Not to mention Brok & Sindri. A lot of great expansion on known characters and excellent additions with the new ones.

u/IMM1711 Oct 06 '24
I also enjoyed Ragnaron more, but it didn’t struck me as much as the original one did.

u/SnooFoxes1192 Oct 07 '24
That part with that atreous giant girlfriend was so cringe for me Im still recovering and its been a week, like, im not her for the lovey dovey and hitting enemies with a stick, I want to be god of war

u/dudeAwEsome101 Oct 05 '24
I think Ragnarok was a good sequel. It didn't change the first game, but added a few more elements on top. I love both games, but I hate revisiting previously explored areas. The maps are boring in how linear and strict they are. Except for the crater area later in the game. The boat is an an interesting method to provide lore and conversations, but my god is it boring when there is no dialogue.
16
u/bad_apiarist Oct 05 '24
I love how they used traversal as organic lore/character dev opportunities in both games. By far the most unintrusive and immersive way to do these story things and made otherwise dull traversal more fun. Other games: stop everything your're doing and read this note. Or sit on your hands while this cutscene plays.
2
u/zzxxccbbvn Oct 06 '24
See I feel different, but that's also because I grew up playing linear games like Zelda. Sometimes it feels nice to take a break from Open World games. I will say that one thing that annoyed me about Ragnarok was the constant unsolicited hints from Atreus and Mimir. Like, let me figure out the puzzle damnit!
2
u/Wes_Warhammer666 Oct 06 '24
I kept getting annoyed by Atreus's vague hints that weren't helping whenever id be stuck.
I was like "boy, every other time you tell me what to do before I even need help, and this time you're speaking in riddles when I need help. I'm about to throw your ass off this cliff." Lol
6
u/AndyM03 Oct 06 '24
The story of the original was incredible. Felt like the plot, writing and pacing fell off a cliff for ragnarok. Odin was great though.
4
u/bad_apiarist Oct 06 '24
Definitely the major issue is that one word: pacing. It's like whenever the plot had momentum, someone said "OK let's just stop everything and have a boring aside in some other place and meet characters and you won't have any idea why it matters". Maybe sequel-itis? Got to be longer and everything bigger, but that rarely means better.
1
u/Routine_Wolf9419 Oct 07 '24
Its because rarnarok was supposed to be 2 games instead of one originally. The devs did state in previous interviews that the norse sage was going to be a trilogy like the old god of war games, but I guess they decided to wrap it up so the story had to be rushed, especially near the end.
1
u/bad_apiarist Oct 07 '24
Yes, I know. Perhaps the lower level devs aren't to blame. Rushing development is never good for the final product.

u/zzxxccbbvn Oct 06 '24
Have you downloaded the Ragnarok DLC Valhalla? I believe it's free and it's a blast
6
2
u/Spider-Thwip Oct 06 '24
Man I loved the first and found ragnorak so boring I had to stop 10 hours in, I just couldn't take it anymore.
2
u/silverking12345 Oct 06 '24
It's very impressive how they managed to relaunch the GOW series with a completely new gameplay and narrative style.
And my god, the writing of GOW, Ragnarok and Valhalla are probably the best I've ever seen in games, basically on the same level as RDR2 or dare I say, superior.
2
u/Kraydez Oct 07 '24
Absolute epic journies. It's a better experience for me than a good movie. It's like you are in the movie. Some games today are more than video games, they are art.
2
u/Only-Obligation-6041 Oct 07 '24
I felt the same, and to think I finished Ragnarok 1 year and a half ago. Definitely the best game for me. Now I struggle to find the same quality GOW gave me

u/Sendmeaquokka Oct 06 '24
It’s weird. I absolutely loved God of War and I know I’m in the minority but I’m just not feeling Ragnarok. Combat can feel like a chore, and characters are pretty irritating, especially when you’re trying to solve and the narrative isn’t as engrossing. I think I miss the linearity of the 2018 game and maybe Cory’s influence.

u/CortexifanZFT Oct 05 '24
I like doing that too but with Forbidden West
32
u/StrawberryWestern189 Oct 05 '24
Forbidden west is so fucking pretty😭 I genuinely don’t know how they maintain that level of graphic fidelity across that large of a play space, you could take a screenshot doing just about anything and it’s damn near cutscene quality
10
u/wanderer1999 Oct 05 '24
Same. Even Horizon 1 is already beautiful, yet they kicked it up another notch in 2.
6
u/masterventris Oct 05 '24
Horizon Zero Dawn remaster is coming too, so I wonder if they will match Forbidden West or perhaps exceed it.
2
u/CortexifanZFT Oct 05 '24
That's exactly why I haven't beaten the game yet. Everytime i play i spend more times pausing and taking screenshots 😆

u/DariusLMoore PC Oct 06 '24
Take your time, there's no point in shortening your enjoyment.
2
u/Wes_Warhammer666 Oct 06 '24
It took me months to finish FW because I was just enjoying it so damn much. Then I found out Burning Shores was coming so I dragged it out even further to line up my finish with the expansion release lol.
10/10 game, imo. Insanely fun, ridiculously beautiful.

u/N7_Reaver Oct 05 '24
Ghost of Tsushima and Space Marine 2 are the only ones that surpassed it for me.
3
u/Thin-Performance-637 Oct 05 '24
Space Marine? Heard of it but never really gave it a try. Is it worth it?
5
2
u/johnsolomon Oct 06 '24
It's worth it but I personally feel like it's a bit overrated
Caveat, which is that this is just my persisting experience: The visuals are incredible but fighting endless waves of enemies eventually got old. I found myself tolerating the fights so I could see more of the game's settings. I wish the game itself had more progression/depth, because it would have broken up the monotony of combat. But I still enjoyed the game and it was nice to see a game do 40K's setting justice

u/Professional-News362 Oct 05 '24
Its a shame about the sequal it's a great game but it doesn't have any jaw dropping moments like this. Closest you get is a certain jellyfish but still...
3
u/drelos Oct 06 '24
Besides jellyfish maybe Fenrir in those big moments and a giant whale town appearing after you completed the game and search for the fragments
1
u/bad_apiarist Oct 05 '24
Yeah. Maybe the assault at the end? But yeah. I think it fell short of the original in most ways (but I super enjoyed the continuing story!). That's not much of a criticism, it's hard to follow up such a tight, beautifully crafted masterpiece.

u/Ok_Fee9263 Oct 05 '24
Spoilers for 2018 and ragnarok:
Ragnarok's ending fight sucks compared the baldur's. Nothing compares to Freya reincarnating the gaint and kratos fighting baldur on top of it. While on GOWR, it felt like another miniboss, especially Odin. Maybe they should've made Ironwood 30 minutes shorter and Asgard 30 minutes longer

I'm planning a second playthrough on pc. 4090 ultrawide so hopefully I'll be more enchanted than my first ps5 performance mode playthrough
1
u/bad_apiarist Oct 05 '24
I think I'd like to playthrough GoW again. But I really have no interest in playing the sequel again. The best part of it was the story, but I've seen that now. And the game is kind of a slog at times.. the sequences with the Boy are meh, don't much care about the Berzerker fights, and even the skills/trees/weapons aren't what I prefer. Seems like they really really want you to constantly switch weapons to access powerful moves. That's a fine mechanic, but I don't appreciate the devs pushing you hard into that narrow playstyle.
16
u/Deku_Hunter Oct 05 '24
Not the biggest fan of the second installment
-5
u/masterofunfucking Oct 06 '24
it’s super rushed and the writing is all over the place. I have no idea how GOW3 from 2010 had way more scope and grandeur than a game from 20 fucking 22
6
u/Dany_Targaryenlol Oct 05 '24
The games that got me taking a bunch of screenshots were Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty and Horizon Forbidden West on the PC.
Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty with Path Tracing turn on is something else in term of lighting techs in gaming right now.
No other games come close other than maybe Alan Wake 2.

I never had a ps4 nor a ps5, but bought GOW 2018 on steam but havent played it yet, how stupid am I?
3
u/silverking12345 Oct 06 '24
I mean, we're all busy amirite?
But srsly, if you like single player narrative driven games, GOW4 and Ragnarok are pretty much right up there with RDR2 and TLOU (second one is divisive but it is what it is).

u/badjano VR Oct 07 '24
yeah, time is something I don't have much to throw around, but I will eventually try it

This game helped me come to terms with the fact that I was going to be a dad. I played it when my wife was pregnant and it oddly eased some of the anxiety about being a dad as it helped me feel that no matter what I did in life as long as I acted like a strong role model I could be a good parent.

I really liked using the photo mode in GOW 2018, it is such a beautiful game!! Could never make Kratos smile though, it freaked me out lol

Just finished two days ago, started Ragnarok now
I mean this game is mostly cut scenes so i took many snaps Even in Ragnarok, in the middle of the fight I have 5 cut scenes.
Nice game hehe

Incredibly good game, really upset that many tapped out of this game because it's not as fast and frantic as the OG God of War games.
1
u/silverking12345 Oct 06 '24
It's a fair take ngl. Not everyone likes story driven games so it's understandable why some wouldn't be into GOW4.
That said, there's clearly a lot of us who absolutely love the new style. In fact, I kinda wish Santa Monica would explore the idea of remaking the original trilogy (and PSP entries) in the GOW4/Ragnarok style. Itll be one hell of an effort but I think it could work.

I honestly had fear and anxiety when looking at hraesvelgr in god of war 2018. Something about it being the only thing in a vast area of darkness made me feel something that felt like phobia. Idk why because it’s just a giant bird at the end of the day

I tried so hard to like the 3rd Tomb Raider in the new trilogy. I played it for maybe 2 or 3 hours and just couldn't get into it.
I gave it up and launched GoW 2018 for the first time. Within the first 5 minutes I was hooked. The atmosphere, sound, visuals and voice acting for this game are incredible.
I very much look forward to playing Ragnarok on PC.

Game is still bad and they need to get back to the roots of the series.

Games need to utilise interactive enormous spectacles more often. This moment was amazing, i feel like some games try but fail, like i didn't get the same feeling when playing wukong with the massive buddahs, great game tho
