Building and tuning is intentionally part of the game. That's like never leveling up your character in an RPG and wondering why leveled characters are better.

I struggle with knowing what settings to change to have better control, and I saw a comment somewhere that you can use AI to help you tune, and that’s honestly a game changer. Tell Chat GPT that you want to tune X model in Y game, and it will help you determine what settings you need to change. After a couple laps, you update it on what you’re seeing in your laps, and it will help you dial it in.

I used it for the god forsaken American Road Racing series and it helped a ton. I’m not affiliated with Chat GPT or some kind of AI shill, so do with this information what you will, but it is a powerful tool.

Soften springs and (mybe) ARB`s for a start. Spend some time testing to find out what is too much or too little

For those who look at this and go "Thats nice, but tuning is so complicated!"

It's really not~ You mess with 20% of the settings 80% of the time so really you only need a grip on a fraction of it. Then as your understanding grows you naturally start experimenting and learning more.

Least such was my experience with tuning. I was always intimidated by it but it's really not half as complicated as it seems. It's just got a really high ceiling =P

Time is my problem. Tweaking is fun, and I know the average stuff, but going through each setup, tweaking, completing 3/4 laps to compare lap times, and tweaking again already requires at least an hour... for each car.... and sometimes each track.

Oh heck naw, I'm not talking about "track perfect" or a top 1% competitive tune... Which I should have called that out. I just mean making a tune that's better, sometimes significantly better than just leaving it stock.

Once you know what you're doing it shouldnt take more than 10-20 mins per car to get a better all rounder and not even comparing track times to do so, just improving the overall feel.

Just for instance, I seldom touch suspension, dampening, or sway tension. I just, at most, mess a little with the final drive, fuss with the alignment (*camber), and tweak the differentials. Thats it. And I usually reclaim 1-2 seconds from it.

I'm sure most of that's just tweaking it to my driving style but that's half the point, right?

After a while of doing it you get a feel for it and should be able to get a basic all-rounder setup that will be a huge improvement compared to stock done in a couple of minutes.

Going really in depth with a lot of testing on a specific track is only really worth it if you for example want to hunt the leaderboards in rivals in my opinion.

Once you gain the knowledge, you will also be able to apply it in other games that offer similar fine-tuning options.

It really is like this, and the more you do it the more you learn what you like in a car

Im normally just trying to tune stuff out of the car I don't like so I'll leave a couple tips here

Too much understeer - soften front suspension by a few values, stiffen rear springs, also can do the same with sway bars.

Too much oversteer - opposite of above

Brake bias being moved one or two percent to the front or rear can drastically shorten braking times and change the feel of braking on some cars.

Limited slip I almost always turn accel to 90+ and decel below 20

It's the dampers that's the hardest to tune though - difficult to figure out what's the optimal bump / rebound ratio while still making sure you have the exact corner entry and exit behaviour you're looking for.

That and differential settings are probably the most complex to figure out.

Tune won't be anywhere near optional if relying only on springs and sway bars

You would tune arbs for corner entry/ exit. The dampers you tune for mid corner over or understeer. Differential is simple too, higher diff means the tires will spin at the same rate quicker than an open diff allowing for more oversteer but subject to spinning out faster. This is about as simple as I can explain it.. there are some “hacks” like suspension geometry being maxed out to the right and 40/40 arbs in fm8.

Definitely, I was just giving people a starting point to learn some basics.

Diff settings aren't too complicated, just driving and making small adjustments it's pretty straightforward to get a car way more sorted in 10-20 laps.

Camber and toe make HUGE changes to turn in, toe out by just .1 changes the dynamics so much

Dampers abc: after softening the springs, go a bit soft here to and take it for a spin. Tighten up step by step until the car feel stabil. I often starts at 5.0 with 9.0 rebound, thats about the stats on a sportsdamper. But cars can be wery different and rear-engine cars might be tricky.

ARB`s; try softening them unytil they are too soft, then test & adjust. Wery related to tiregrip this

If you have lowered the car all way down it will be close to impossible to tune suspension.

What is fascinating about the tuning system is that depending on your racing style, you can have 3 different people who tune three different ways, that are all high level and very close in time.

You can even have one guy run a blisteringly quick time, then let another amazing driving use the same tune and he might do even better or not even get close because of driving styles. The highest I’ve ever gotten in the leaderboards in Motorsport was top 36, and one of the times I did it with used an automatic transmission oddly enough.

If you don't know how to tune and you need a half decent tune to start and make a car driveable, just try the app"ForzaTune". Obviously it's not perfect, but it's decent enough for most of the people.

This is what I use and recommend. I mean like you said it's not perfect because everybody has differing styles but it'll get you pretty damn close and with a basic understanding you can tweak it more yourself. Many times, especially when I just feel like driving, I don't even bother tweaking the tune myself after the app and it's plenty fine enough.

If the developers "perfectly" tuned cars there'd be nothing for players to do with a tuning system. So it's natural that they are balanced "enough" but leave room for those that love to tinker to make it better.

There is a cool guide called: "Awesome setup guide/troubleshooter from Chris Haye" that works with almost any race track game (ex. F1, Assetto, iRacing and Forza Motorsport)

I think this is too big difference. Forza has always had this huge gap between tuned versions and stock and it sucks imo. Also at the same time, I understand why people do it, because having that knowledge is rewarding.

It just creates so much separation. Tuning was literary the reason why only couple people could finish a race, back at endurance month at lemans. That is fucked up.

I would definitely be happy if tuning wasnt a thing in FM games.

I mean…It’s realistic 😂 The difference between a stock car and a tuned one IRL is MASSIVE, like night and day. You take two of the exact same cars, the tuned model will drive circles around the stock one

The stock tunes in this game seem to be "drivable for anyone regardless of skill." Tuning is meant to make the car better suited to your driving style/reach its full potential

No, that's what stock setups should be. Forza's stock tunes are however notoriously bad compared to a lot of other sim racers out there.
