This isn’t untrue, but he also had flashes of genuine brilliance in terms of race craft. Sakhir 2020, Abu Dhabi 2021, etc. They didn’t call him the “Mexican Minister of Defense” for nothing. He cratered at the end of his career and fully deserved to lose his seat, but he wasn’t always as terrible a driver as recent history would suggest.

He wasn't even that terrible considering the car was fucked and putting everything together, but Reddit would have everyone believe otherwise by pushing completely unrealistic expectations. Now that he's been replaced nobody seems convinced his replacement will fare any better... Reddit is truly full of lunatics.
The car was not fucked. It was the clear best car at the start, and by the end, was at least the third best car. Enough for a driver to still comfortably win the WDC with two races to spare. With that car, Perez should still have been getting semi-regular podiums or at least, P5s and P6s, aka, enough to get them over the line and win the WCC. You shouldn't be bombing out in Q1 and finishing out of the points every weekend, not in that car.

Perez's car was constantly behind in updates though. Not excusing him because he did drive quite poorly, but there's only so much he could do anyway when the team isn't behind you. The outcome isn't surprising, that's all I'm saying.
Every team does staggered upgrades when they can't make more than one. McLaren prioritised Norris because he was the senior driver, but they didn't have this gulf. Plus, no upgrade magically shaves five tenths, and you'll get it next weekend, anyway. While over the course of the season, Perez's car was possibly slower than Max's on some weekends, it shouldn't be P1 vs P8.
