Poor performance implies he had anything left in the tank to give. He was at his personal peak all season.
Edit: I’m getting downvoted for pointing out Checo just isn’t good enough to have done any better? Lots of fanboys in denial hoping for a Christmas miracle today.
The Perez debate is annoying because it’s people just screaming at each other that he sucks, or he’s actually still a top-4 on the grid. Nobody wants to just admit that he’s an older and declining driver, but will still go down as a legend.
Nobody wants to just admit that he’s an older and declining driver,
I think the trouble is that a lot of people don't want to admit he shouldn't have ever got the seat.
I imagine a good percentage of people here were not even watching F1 when he was anywhere else but Red Bull so... eh
People talk about his flashes of brilliance but all he did in those moments was drive as good as his teammate for a dozen laps...
Dude was midfield his entire career and if anyone thinks a 'flash' of brilliance is good then go fawn over Maldonado who had bigger brighter flashes in shittier cars.
Perez debate is annoying because people act like he was ever good enough. His flashes are just other drives fucking normality in the best car on the grid.
I 100% agree with you. But i also remember a lot of people saying back in 2020 when he didn't have a contract he should be given a chance at a top team and how it was a shame he won't be on the grid.
So at least people thought he would be good enough.
RBR did just that and gave him a chance. Unfortunately all it showed is he indeed was a midfield driver.
A legend is a stretch mate. I wouldn't even call Rosberg a legend and he won a WDC (against Hamilton in the same machinery!).
Yes he had a few good laps in him at Abu Dhabi 21 and a great recovery drive in Bahrain. But let's call it as it is; he was SO FAR behind Hamilton and Max that they were almost a pitstop ahead and RBR used his slow pace to their advantage. As some people mentioned here, had he been any more decent races throughout the season he had given the Mercedes engineers a bit of harder time.
And let's not forget Russell should have easily won that Bahrain 20 race subbing for Hamilton if Mercedes didn't have those poor pitstop. I know it's and buts and maybe.
But to me it shows that those 2 flashes of "legend" were more luck and bad than legendary.

It's sad his poor performances out shine all the great stuff he did.
