They knew what they were doing with the cropping and it’s hilarious.

I think they should have gone further. Just the neck and a bit of chin for the tall boys and just half the forehead for the shorties.

Fun fact on this is that Ocon’s not only tall, he’s also proportioned in a way that means he doesn’t always fit in the car.
Williams did a seat fit to check if he’d actually fit in theirs.

I may be misinterpreting the second article you included but based on the quotes, I think Pierre was able to get the smaller cockpit he requested.
"We're kind of going in the same direction, apart from very long arms that he has! I'm requesting a tighter cockpit for obvious gains and he's not so keen," Gasly said.
"I don't know how he drives [motions driving the car with his elbows out], but he needs slightly more space than me!
"We'll see how that goes, but I must say that's probably the only area where he'll favour comfort over maybe more bias towards performance.
"Except from that, I think it's very clear, similar direction and it's been quite straightforward to work with him.
"I think the team will always be keen on maximising the space that you have. I'm quite happy, I've got lots of room, but we've got one tall driver with long arms and long limbs.
"There are negotiations we are having at the moment, obviously it's going to go towards performance."To me that sounds like Pierre was pointing out how that's the only difference between his and Esteban's requests and otherwise they are very aligned in the feedback they give (something they have both mentioned multiple times). That last quote in particular sounded like Pierre was very confident that he would get the smaller cockpit he requested. :)
Also to add to your point about Esteban's unusual proportions, I remember this article pointing out that Esteban's measurements have actually been carefully taken and used by the FIA "who have introduced changes to ensure that car dimensions in various categories" to ensure tall drivers can drive comfortably.

Doohan looks broader than either of them to be honest, so I suspect they’ll go back to a bigger cockpit…

u/toffee-and-tandoori Esteban Ocon 12h ago
Yeah, this picture definitely shows Jack's broader build! Hopefully Jack and Pierre will be similarly aligned in car feedback (like Pierre and Esteban apparently were) and they'll find a car that suits both of them.
•
u/The_Ravio_Lee 7h ago
Doesn't look like that much of a difference to me, maybe he fills the suit a bit more? Pierre seems to be slightly angled too.
Unrelated but was this at COTA? I'd like to see them drive that NASCAR if you a link lol
•
u/toffee-and-tandoori Esteban Ocon 7h ago
I looked at a few pictures comparing the two and honestly I agree with you! This was the only picture I could find where one of them wasn't standing much closer to the camera than the other or was significantly angled towards or away from the camera.
What I meant by my original comment is I thought the picture showed Jack's broad build but I see how that could be interpreted as me saying Jack has a broader build than Pierre - anyway yes I agree those two are of a similar breadth and both are more broad than Esteban.
And after some Googling it looks like the photo is actually from when they drove V8 Supercars at Calder Park in Melbourne! Skip to about 6 minutes for the footage of them driving. There are some Castrol challenges where Pierre and Esteban faced the RFK Racing team if you want to see them try NASCAR!
•
u/The_Ravio_Lee 7h ago
I was mainly look at their shoulders, but it does look like Jack has the bigger waist size. You're right though, they're very similar in build.
I might still be drunk, I really thought that was a NASCAR lmao, you can even faintly see the RHD... Thanks for the link!

Devries and tsunoda were taller than hadjar and tsunoda?

u/btokendown Yuki Tsunoda 12h ago
Nyck claims to be 5'7 which is a lie considering there definitely isn't that big of a gap between him and Yuki
•
u/Realistic-Reception5 Carlos Sainz 11h ago
I think De Vries was like 168 cm so this line up is just a cm less
•
u/hondaRA107 8h ago
I always seen Nick being Listed at 167cm which is just under 5'6. His 5'7 claims is him adding himself an inch. Yuki is about 160cm which is 5'3. 7cm especially when two people are standing in relaxed pose is not rly as big of a difference. Yuki possibly has insoles to add himself some height you never know

Would having similarly sized drivers be more of a benefit?

u/toffee-and-tandoori Esteban Ocon 12h ago
During the weekend warmup for Spa, Ruth Buscombe actually briefly mentioned how it's helpful from a design perspective because of the similar centers of gravity!
Tagging u/Ubi-Fanch because while I can't confirm whether it was a factor in their decision-making process, the benefits Ruth was describing make me think it could at least be in the back of their mind.
(Also I believe the fact-checking was done and Esteban and Ollie are not the tallest ever driver lineup in F1 history - that honor goes to Justin Wilson and Mark Webber who were 193cm and 184 cm, respectively and briefly teammates at Jaguar in 2003.)

Mercedes probably had a similar issue with Lewis and George to some degree,
•
u/SpicyDarkness Oscar Piastri 10h ago
Has, present tense because Kimi is not tall either lol
•
u/Zipa7 9h ago
Oh yeah, I think he is a couple of CM shorter than Lewis.
•
u/hondaRA107 8h ago
Kimi is 175cm which would make him 1cm taller than Lewis. That being said Lewis got measured at 171.5 cm by Mclaren one year which he replied that he apparently shrunk. Lewis is also a proven lift wearer.

An amazing find! Thank you for the links and explanation
•
u/toffee-and-tandoori Esteban Ocon 7h ago
Of course! I'm glad you thought it was interesting because I thought so too. It's not something I thought of before but Ruth's explanation makes so much and now I'm like "of course there's some advantage to having drivers of similar builds".
It makes me curious about some of the pairings with more disparate builds and whether those differences in size translate to differences in performance. Some people already pointed out Lewis/George and Pierre/Esteban but I'm also curious about Daniel/Yuki and Nico/Kevin for example. Also makes me curious about whether the most successful teammate pairs in F1 have more similar builds, haha!
•
u/killer_corg Haas 7h ago
She seemed so excited to talk about it too! Ruth is the best, love what she has to add to any broadcast.
Yeah I'd love to see like a breakdown of teammates and sizes just for kicks going back on the best teams

Slight correction. Ocon is actually 188cm.

Bearmans also 187cm, not sure where they got these figures from
•
u/hondaRA107 8h ago
Bearman info is from the F2 website. The listing was put up in 2023 for his rookie year in the series and was not changed for this year. Year prior in 2022 when he was in F3 he was listed at 177cm so the guy clearly grew. I reckon hes around 185cm now just shy off George.
•
u/hondaRA107 8h ago
These drivers adding themselves heights constantly. Why do they have the need to do that? Charles saying he is 180 even tho he has a centimeter or two at best on Vettel who is 175-6cm. Esteban got measured at Force India (186cm) when he was already in his 20s. Highly unlikely he grew. Then claimed 187cm in drivers guessing heights video couple of yrs ago and now says hes 188cm which is the first time im hearing that from him. What the hell... Bearman was listed at 184cm for 2023 F2 season, a listing that stayed for 2024. Currently listed at 185 by google I just checked. Altho he said he was 186cm this year when he was asked on social media but I remember in Jeddah when him and George got out of their cars after the race they filmed them walking together and George clearly edged him out and George claims he is 186cm (even tho hes listed at 185cm). Nyck de Vries was also claiming 170cm even tho he is clearly shorter than Fernando and is listed at 167cm on numerous sites... These guys rly are competitive about everything

The grid ain't prepared for Ugo Ugochukwu

Ugo might grow himself out of F1 contention at the rate he's going.

I'm a Yuki fan but considering how I'm 163cm I think I'm obliged to be a VCARB fan next year.

Anyone know what the maximum height of a driver could be in the current era cars? I don’t mean the max height that a team would hire, as I know taller means heavier which means slower. I’m just curious if I would even be physically able to take an F1 car around a track at say 20% speed. I’m not fat, just tall

I thought bearman was taller? Besides, there's a chance he could grow even taller
•
u/hondaRA107 8h ago
Bearman will likely end up at 6'2 (188/189cm) or even 6'3 if he gets lucky. I was an early bloomer started puberty at 12 to be exact. I gained an inch after 18. Was 6'0.5 (184cm) as a highschool senior now im just shy of 6'2 at 187cm in my early 20s. I thought I was done by 18 considering the fact I reached 6 foot already as a 16 yr old and only grew half an inch in those two years. If I did it Ollie can to considering he is deffo a late bloomer. The guy probably still has some height left in him. Wasn't he barely 5'10 2 or 3 yrs ago? Mental when you think about it...

Wonder how it's going to go though ??
Here you have Bearman, Full of promise and more than likely an eye on Lewis's seat at Ferrari when he retires 🤔
On otherside you have Ocon.............. Someone with no understanding of the importance in getting a team result
