Check-in 72 hours, water, coffee, electrolytes only

So glad for this sub, reading other's journeys is so encouraging. First time three days, and some things to mention:

  1. It was definitely harder to sleep through both nights but being sleep deprived bothered me a lot less.

  2. My typical emotional rollercoaster was far less intense, as was my demeanor when dealing with relationship tensions.

  3. My racing thoughts expected at this time of year were far more manageable.

  4. The sense of self control gained had me feeling sorry for others who I know we're going through car -sugar-salt-alcohol induced mood swings. Sorry in the sense of I hope they figure out how much fasting, especially at this time of year, helps.

  5. It reminded me how incredibly over indulgent America's food culture is, though I see a great deal awareness raising, and of course I look for these groups so maybe it's tough to see the larger picture, not sure how wide spread the awareness is growing.

  6. Feelings of regret about not practicing this sooner quickly passed as I felt so much here and now that it didn't matter as I was doing what's best presently, which is all we ever have.

  7. I'm about 9kg over fat at the start but lost 3kg in three days as I kept up my cardio each day, wind cycling 10 minutes twice a day each day and did slow but physical labor to boot.

  8. I ate "clean" tonight, and enjoyed it in a sensual way. I'll eat breakfast tomorrow and then start another 3 days to make it into the new year.

So grateful for this venue. Love to all and keep on fasting responsibly (my mom worked on an eating disorder unit so I know of the potential dangers of taking things too far)!

I am not sure if a longer fast benefits me

Check-in First Day of Fasting Done!

Hi guys. Just wanted to share that I’ve completed my first day of fasting and I am really proud of myself! I am doing the AFD fast and I have just had my first meal in 24 hours. I’m feeling very energised after my meal and i really appreciated the food more than I used to. Tomorrow is my feed day but the day after, I fast again. Does anyone have any tips on how to generally stave off the hunger pangs, or do these go away with time? Thanks!!

Discussion Head injury healing

I'm a TBI survivor of over 30 years. Well, after 25 years I thought that was about all the healing I was going to get. I was fat and my wife suggested fasting to get rid of the excess weight; so 38 years post-injury I did a 4 day water fast. I lost 10 pounds. My cognitive functions improved. My balance improved. My speech improved. More improved. I asked my father what he noticed improved and he said that he couldn't pinpoint it but that just generally I had improved. SO my recommendation is to give it a try and see if it helps. What do you have to lose (besides 10 pounds)? 5 of those pounds will come back upon re-feed but 5 pounds is a lot of weight to lose. I did fasts before and after the 4 day and I went from 184 pounds to 150 pounds in about 9 months. My main protocol was to fast 32 hours once or twice a week (eat dinner, don't eat the next day, eat the following breakfast) combined with fasting 17ish hours a day the other days of the week.

Question Question for the New Year’s fasts: When will you stop?

When will you end your fast on New Year’s Day? Will you begin eating again at the stroke of twelve? Or will you break your fast at your usual time? I can’t decide what I’ll do.

Question i seem to have stopped growing hair

Upvotes

I used to have to shave my armpits once or twice a week, but I've grown absolutely no hair there the past month. That's when I started doing 72h rolling fasts. I'm not complaining but is this normal?

Question Any dieticians here?

I’ve recently been in talks with a dietician and haven’t told her I fast just that I mainly eat one meal a day (dinner).

She says this is likely contributing to my hormone imbalances and inflammation and I should be eating several times a day (ideally breakfast and lunch too).

I guess I’m just trying to feel out what’s best for my body and struggling with the idea that I need to eat more often when I want to actually lose weight and eating in a small time window is easier for me mentally. Any advice here?

Discussion Anyone have experience with rolling 72s?

I'm as heavy as I've ever been and it's pretty bad. I have experience with other types of fasting in the past but I've never tried something this long. I did the math, and if calories are truly all thay matter, I'd lose like 11lbs every 2 weeks. There's also a YouTube who has a channel called finally fasting who lost a ton of weight in fairly short amount of time doing it. I'm going to take 4 weeks to build up to it instead of going right into it. I'm going to do a week of keto and then 2 weeks of adf, and then a week of fasting Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and then do a 15 day cycle of rolling 72s.

Is a 72 hour fast considered "prolonged" and with that, do I need to do anything differently such as be careful to avoid refeeding syndrome or anything like that?

Also, if anyone here has done it, how did you feel and how much did you lose?

Question 96 hour fast… let’s go!

Hey everyone!

I’m starting a 96-hour fast today and will be finishing at 19:00 on the 31st. What a great way to feel amazing going into 2025!

I’ve done a 72-hour fast before, but that was over a year ago. I loved the experience and felt great. However, since then, I’ve definitely built some more muscle (I’m 25, female). Now, I’m a bit worried about losing some of it during this fast. Any tips on how to minimize muscle loss during a 96-hour fast?

A few other questions: 1. How do you stay energized during long fasts, especially when you’re used to working out?

2. Can I do light workouts, not heavy lifting or intense cardio. Will do minimum 15.000 steps a day, and would like to go for some light lifting. What do you guys think?

3. For those of you who’ve done long fasts, how do you feel post-fast—physically and mentally?

4. Any advice on staying motivated through a longer fast like this?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Wish me good luck!

Check-in Update: Refeeding week after 21 days water fast.

I have been introducing foods back in to my system - slowly. Broth, chicken noodle soup, kefir, probiotics, keto bread, and just some grain and a little potato on Christmas Day. Kept my calories at 500-600 because I can’t seem to eat too much.

Gained about 3lbs which is expected water weight as the system stores glycogen.

In the New Year once I’ve replenished the essentials back into my system, I am going to follow strict keto and cycle through 36hr fasts.

Anyone have any stories to share post extended water fasts and continued weight loss? Thanks!

Question "normal" weight and fasting

Hi, I usually weigh around 85kg (187lbs), which is within the normal range for my height. Over Christmas, I indulged in loads of chocolate and sugary foods and skipped any fasting. Naturally, my weight crept up a few kilos/pounds. Since yesterday, I’ve started a 36-hour fast. Normally, I only fast from Sunday evening until Tuesday noon, but this week I decided to add a Friday fast as well. On other days, I typically fast for 16–18 hours. I also do 1 hour of fitness almost every day which also helps.

Do you think this is a good approach to maintain my normal weight? I love food, so fasting helps me enjoy a bit more when I indulge and then balance it out on other days. Is anybody else doing it like this?

Question Longest Fast For Me.

My longest fast was a few years ago at roughly 20 days. I drank water and occasionally coffee, no sweetener or additional additives.

Over the past year and half I've gained back weight. Mainly because of a new environment, my life has been turned upside down. However, normalcy has returned and I want to get back what was lost.

My question is what would a 30 day fast look like? I assume electrolytes are a must. What else will I need to be cognizant to?

Question I’m an alcoholic but I want to fast help!

I am considering fasting because I am over weight. I love alcohol and know I have a problem with it and I don’t want to stop drinking right now. I know that alcohol gives calories obviously but I’m actually considering fasting with water and continuing to drink. What problems will I face?

Question Been fasting for 22 days straight, usually doing 18/6 daily. Haven't lost a lot of weight. Is this normal or should I try something else?

Am I supposed to do this continually? 351h and barely lost any inches of body fat. If i have a large meal even just in my eating window, I feel like I've gained a few inches back (I'll be honest I don't measure consistently but I'm looking in the mirror and it's not encouraging).

Question Fasting and curing some health issues

Hi there,

I am currently doing IF 16-8 since august. So 4 months right now. So far no problems whatsoever.

IBut the last weeks I am suffering from 3 problems:

  • low energy levels
  • dizziness occasionally
  • lower back pain

I’ve been to doctors and physiotherapists, but the problems are not ging away. I am also taking a break from working at the moment. So I don’t have to do very much on a day. I am also working out 6 days a week. So I do sports.

It it possible that a 72 hour waterfast could help me with my problems? I want to try if it could help me because of the cell renewal and potential energy boost it could give.

I’ve done 24 hour waterfasts in the past.

What do you guys think?

Discussion OMAD did the trick, but I fell off the wagon

I've reached a breaking point. For the past year and a half, I've been trying to focus on my health, losing weight, and so forth. From September 2023 to March 2024, I did lose a significant amount of weight, going from 96kg to 73kg. However, in the last few months (September 2024 to December 2024), I kind of lost focus on what I ate and exercised. After I was diagnosed with a kidney problem, I felt too stressed and stopped watching what I ate, often consuming a lot of carbohydrates several times a day. This led to me spending a lot of money on unhealthy stuff at the grocery store, and now I weigh 83kg.

I don't like my appearance when I look in the mirror. I feel fat and a bit ugly. I simply cannot gain more weight, otherwise, I will feel miserable and like I did when I was heavier. I believe that I saw a lot of exciting new opportunities come up when I had high self-esteem and felt better about myself.

This is my breaking point, December 26, 2024. From September 2023 to March 2024, I mostly followed an OMAD (One Meal A Day) and keto diet. During this time, I felt like I had control over my own life, and of course, losing a significant amount of weight was a major benefit. I remember it being hard at first and struggling with sweet cravings, but I know that I am capable of doing this and that it will be worth it in the end. Soon, I will start a new job where they have restaurants. I can plan to have my one meal a day there, consisting of a large salad and meat. I will also continue to exercise (although I know that I will lose some performance at the gym, I gained a fair amount of muscle mass between September 2023 and now, as I went to the gym 3 to 4 times a week).

As of November 2024, I am a PhD student (working with mechanical metallurgy), a high school teacher once a week, and a college professor (at a private college in Brazil, not the greatest one) at night.

However, starting on January 6th, I will begin a new job at a great multinational company. I will stop teaching high school, and my teaching hours at the college will be reduced from five times a week to once a week. Additionally, my PhD thesis will shift to a more theoretical focus, allowing me to work from home and concentrate on my new job. I will also be earning significantly more money.

I feel hopeful about this new phase and the idea that I can regain control of my body and feel great again.
