Hey r/digitalnomad

This thread is for chatting about being a DN. This includes the news about travel and visas, where people are living, commonly asked questions, as well as a general free chat throughout the week.

Example topics include:

  • Regularly asked questions such as "What jobs do you do?"
  • Where you are currently living and where you are heading next
  • Questions about DN visas or Tax clarifications
  • What gear you like to travel with
  • Updates on the COVID-19 situation in different countries
  • Best places to go out to eat or drink wherever you are
  • General questions that you feel do not require an entire thread

Please be civil and keep things SFW.

Self promotion of DN related events, blogs, activities, and news is allowed from regular contributors so long as it is related to being a Digital Nomad and not spammy.

If there is something you'd like to see here please message the moderators and let us know.

README Want to make a post? Read this first!

Read the WIKI before posting

9 times out of 10 it will have the answers you are looking for.

Where is my post?

Why isn't my post showing up?

If you are new to reddit, posting with a new account, or posting with an account that has not been widely used your post will be flagged as it either looks like spam, or is highly likely to be an FAQ covered in the wiki above. We ask that you please spend some time searching through existing posts, reviewing the wiki or participating in the sub to build up enough karma to post. You can also post a comment in the Monthly Megathread pinned to the top of the sub.

I am not new to reddit but post still isn't showing up, why not?

Due to the volume of posts we get on a few very specific subjects we will often remove or not-approve certain posts on certain topics that have been recently discussed. Here are some common questions that get posted at least 5 times a day:

My post wasn't related to any of those things, why isn't it showing up?

Does your post violate our rules on self promotion?

OK, here’s the deal. We understand that for many of us, entrepreneurship and digital nomad are concepts that go hand in hand. Many of us here are working towards booting up great products, and some working towards products that cater directly to the DN community. But, this sub is not a community full of potential people to market to with your posts.

Your product may be great, brilliant, and what every DN needs but never knew it, but if that’s true then it’ll be talked about by the community once it’s known - through other channels. In this sub, we frequently get spam and does the entire community a disservice. Users get annoyed, the community starts to weaken, the moderators get overly aggressive, posts that should be OK end up automatically in the spam filter. These things are not good for anyone.

Here’s some No No’s:

  • Absolutely no surveys. Surveys will be removed without mercy.

  • No requests for interviews, or people to talk to on your blog/book/podcast/etc.

  • Anything about illegal activities. You’ll be awarded a ban, and maybe then some.

  • No asking for “please review/try my…”. There are many other subs for just that.

  • Looking for Work type posts. See the Jobs wiki if you are looking for work

  • Job postings. If you have a job that you are trying to hire for please post it in the Weekly Discussion Threads.

  • Fund my kickstarter! Nope. Not even for your “friend”.

  • Any “opportunity” to become a partner / investor. We can’t tell this from a scam, so it’ll be treated like a scam.

  • No direct links to products using an affiliate ID. If you’re caught, you’ll be punished.

  • Posting to software/apps/web sites/etc, with "PM me for access". If it's not public, it's not welcome.

  • Posting software/apps/etc that aren't complete and ready to use. This isn't a user interest collection sub.

Here’s some highly discouraged things:

  • Linking to your youtube channel - We do allow people to share youtube videos if they are relevant and if they come from users who are active in the community and provide valuable content such as trip reports. If you want to share your youtube content please message the mods first for approval.

  • Linking to your own blog - We allow you to share your blog as a link in a self post if the primary content of the blog post is also included in the self post and the link is more of a "Click here to learn more".

  • Top X lists without detailed reviews for each item. We don't hate lists but these posts are rarely useful. Instead of posting a link, post the content of the list in a self post for discussion.

  • "Where should I go" posts : Check out the Trip Reports for Inspiration. If you still want advice be very specific about what you are looking for, and be sure to include important information like your nationality and budget/

LAPTOP PICS / LOCATION PICS

This gets its own section because it is somewhat controversial. If you are posting a pretty picture of somewhere you are, you MUST fill out either a trip report or answer the automod questions about the place. Anyone found dumping pictures without giving in depth information about the location will have their post removed.

Suggestions

If your post still isn't showing up and you think it should, message the moderators first and be sure to include the word "peanut" in the message title so we know you read this.

Have a product you want to inform us about? Buy an ad on reddit to target this (and other) related subs. You’ll get the exposure you want, without the community backlash. It’s good for reddit as a whole too!

Want to talk about a product or service that’s not yours, but you really like? Try linking to a third party, impartial review from a known trusted source. If you wrote it, avoid affiliate links in the article and be sure to mention any relevant disclosures if you are involved with creating the product or marketing it.

Want to link to your site about your experience with something? Great! We encourage that, but focus on the content not how many visitors might join your mailing list. If you truly were writing content for the greater good, put it on medium.com.

Instead of a Top 10 list, which has just a picture and some basic stats: Write a detailed comparison of just two places. With real meaty content, data and stories.

Have a coupon for a product? Actually, that might be good. But unless it’s a high ticket item like a car or laptop, 5% off won’t cut it. The coupon must have more value to the community than for the person that posted it.

Thanks!

Question Looking to start my Digital Nomad Journey in Mexico with a young family, any tips?

I’ve been working towards taking my family to Mexico to try out the digital nomad lifestyle. We have three kids (currently ages 0, 2, and 4), but we’ll likely wait until they’re at least a year older before making the move.

The plan is to start with a month-long stay—possibly in Mexico City (CDMX), Quintana Roo or maybe some of Mexicos ciudades magicos (magical small towns)—but I’d like to set things up so we can extend our stay to as long as six months, taking advantage of Mexico’s generous digital nomad allowances.

My employer is fully on board, and I’m fluent in Spanish, having spent two years fully immersed in Guatemala. I also have some schedule flexibility so I could also take long lunches or breaks to go out a couple times during the day as well. I’ve also visited a few places in Mexico before, like Huatulco, Puerto Vallarta, and Tijuana, so I have some familiarity with the country. However, this will be my first time traveling there with my wife and kids.

One of my priorities is to ensure that my family feels comfortable and able to explore while I’m working. We’re considering renting a nice condo or house with amenities like a pool or playground, but I don’t want them to feel stuck in the rental all day. I’d love for my wife to feel confident taking the kids out on outings to explore and enjoy the area, even without me. Also my wife does understand a little Spanish, and could likely get by asking basic directions but she isn't fluent, but the kids have shown an interest lately and I've been spending a lot of time talking to them in Spanish and limiting their tv time to Spanish language content(that they seem completely happy watching)

Does anyone have experience working remotely while their spouse takes the kids on day outings, especially in Mexico? I’m looking for tips and insights from families with young kids, particularly where one parent works remotely and the other doesn’t. What has worked for you in terms of logistics, activities, and keeping everyone happy and comfortable?

TL;DR: Planning to take my family (wife and 3 young kids) to Mexico for 1-6 months to try digital nomad life. My employer is on board, and I’m fluent in Spanish. Looking for advice from families on how to balance remote work with day outings for the kids (led by my non-remote-working spouse). Any tips on logistics, activities, or keeping everyone comfortable?

Question Top 3 Health-Focused European/Western Cities for 2-3 Month Stays

Hey everyone! I’m looking to spend my last year in my 20s creating a foundation for a healthier lifestyle while managing endometriosis. I’m searching for locations where I can stay 2-3 months each, focusing on healing and wellness while maintaining my remote work (US timezone compatible). Already have 2 months planned in NYC during spring for work, so looking to plan the rest of the year.

My criteria:

  • Budget: €3000/month (flexible if needed)

  • Must be in Europe or Western Hemisphere (timezone compatibility for US work)

  • Good internet connection essential

-Easy access to fresh, organic food

  • Walkable city with nearby nature/parks

-Beach access preferred (no surfing, more calm like Croatia)

-Quality gyms, yoga, and pilates studios

  • Bonus: biohacking facilities/wellness centers Safe for solo female traveler

-Good flight connections to Costa Rica (direct or convenient routes)

Some background: I previously lived in Valencia and loved it, but looking for new experiences. I’ve tried Quintana Roo (Mexico) but found it too touristy and felt unsafe. Costa Rica is not my cup of tea (too expensive for poor quality of life).

I’m also open to structured wellness programs/bootcamps (60-90 days) that focus on healing protocols while allowing me to maintain work. The goal is to establish healthy habits and potentially find a longer-term base (6+ months/year) that supports my career, wellbeing, and healing journey.

Would love to hear from people who’ve spent 2-3+ months in places focusing on health/wellness - what are your top 3 recommendations? Particularly interested in locations with wellness-minded communities.

Any leads on more affordable accommodation options would also be greatly appreciated!

Question Seeking Webcam Recommendations for Online Teaching

Upvotes

I need a webcam for teaching online classes, ensuring that my students can see my face and upper body clearly. I will be positioned between 80 cm and 1.5 meters away from the camera. I'm currently considering the following webcams:

  • NexiGo N930AF 1080p
  • Webcam Razer Kiyo Full HD 1080p
  • Webcam Elgato Facecam Neo Full HD 1080p
  • Logitech C920 Full HD 1080p/30fps

Which of these do you recommend, or are there other models you would suggest?

Question Should I keep trying to be a DN or give up for now and seek another route.

Hi everyone, after a life changing 3 month backpacking trip did in 2023, i have been working relentlessly ever since to find a way to become a digital nomad. In the past 1.25 years, i moved back home and worked day and night to teach myself marketing, and when i couldn’t land any sort of internship or job this past spring, i took the leap to work even harder to build my own LLC to freelance as a digital marketer.

I have been slightly successful, Ive made on average about $2000 a month with my business, BUT i have been working like a dog. Literally like 14 hours a day, taking only Sundays off, wearing all hats. At first i was really determined and despite making an unlivable wage (for the US + $500 monthly student loan payments, and 30% taxes), i kept pushing through for months trying to land bigger clients or at least clients willing to pay me my worth.

Well im officially burnt out, and decided to start job searching again instead because im so sick of being broke and also want to have a position I’ll have steady income. I just cannot send anymore proposals to prospective clients, im exhausted. However i know that remote jobs for entry level Americans are also near impossible to get as an entry level ish professional right now, so im feeling honestly so down about working my ass off living on Pennie’s for the past year to come back to square one in an even worse job market.

Did i give up too soon? I feel like maybe i need more professional experience to succeed more in freelance and to gain better connections. Am i wrong? Did anyone else start freelancing in marketing from a different educational background (for me i have a bachelors in biology) and did it work out for you?

Question Travel Bag for Remote Jobs + Travel

I'm looking for a versatile travel bag (or a two-bag combo) that can handle both traveling while managing two remote jobs.

Currently, I use the Cotopaxi Allpa 28L (older model reference) and the Osprey Farpoint 40L (older model reference). Both have worked well for regular backpacking trips, and I have switched between them depending on the length of travel, where I'm going, or purpose of the trip. Sometimes I bring with my LL Bean Stoway (here) for weekend trips if I have a base or to carry around the town. However, both of the options listed do not integrate work + travel as much as what I am hoping for.

Here is what I need to carry:

  • Two laptops (13" and 15")
  • 15" portable monitor
  • A mouse and other tech essentials
  • Travel necessities (clothes, hygiene bag, etc.)

I've been researching options like the Minaal Carry-On 3.0 (here) and Aer Travel Pack 3 (here), but I'd like like some recommendations. Would it be better to add another bag to the collection to use in tandem with one I have or is there a single option that could work better? Any other thoughts?

Question Must travel back to the US time to time

Need some advice.

I have been a digital nomad for 6 months but my job requires me to travel to the US every once and then. Those of you who have to travel, how do you manage it? How many days do you give to yourself if things go south with the flight (cancellation/delay).

Also, trips to yeh US eat on my budget. Are there spedicid passes I could rely on that you are aware of?

Question Advice for Testing the Digital Nomad Life? Considering Phuket or Other Options

Hey everyone! Long-time lurker here 👀

I'm an Australian software engineer working for an American company, and I’m thinking about trying the digital nomad lifestyle.

My first thought was Thailand—specifically Phuket. I’d love to set up there, focusing on activities like yoga, boxing, and other fitness classes. Has anyone spent time in Phuket as a digital nomad? I chose it because I found Bangkok a bit too big and hectic when I visited earlier this year.

Alternatively, are there any other places you'd recommend? I’m looking for somewhere with a good fitness scene, opportunities to meet people, and a generally chill vibe. I also speak conversational Spanish, so South or Central America could be an option too.

Appreciate any tips or suggestions!

Question American RN looking for a online job so I can live in France

Upvotes

Hello! I’m an RN and will be moving to France next year. I was wondering if it was possible to work as a nurse in America(telehealth or triage) while living in France. Has anyone done this?

Or any recommendations on how to get paid for working in healthcare while abroad? I speak French but nowhere near enough for a hospital. TIA!!

Question Made a Permanent Decision in Temporary Places

I moved to New Orleans four years ago during the pandemic and bought a new construction 2.5 years ago. Reflecting on my life as a middle-aged single woman and what the city offers, I’ve realized New Orleans isn’t for me for many reasons. The novelty has worn off, my mental health is declining, and I regret making a permanent decision in a temporary place.

I’ve invested heavily in the house, which is actually too big (down payment, furnishings, etc.), and am torn between renting or selling. My biggest fear with renting is high PM fees, property damage, and if ever faced with having to return the energy feeling off. I don’t want to make an emotional choice, but I’m ready to hit the road and explore the world at my own pace. While part of me values having a home base, I’m unhappy and must decide what’s next. Has anyone else gone through this or similar?

Question Any recs for apps that track your travel data (Android compatible)?

Basically the title. A lot of friends with iPhones use Flighty. Is there anything similar for Android that does the same thing, i.e. captures your total mileage flown, number of flights taken, airports, countries, etc? I have App in the Air which does an okay job but curious what else is out there. Thanks!

Question Are any of your employers aware? If so, any tips?

I want to apply to a digital nomad visa in Europe and I genuinely want to tell my employer and remain living in the country legally, however every time I visit this subreddit it seems everyone is just hiding it and changing counties.

Have any of you been upfront and honest and succeeded? And if so, what tips do you have to find a contract job that doesn't care where you are? Thank you!

Question Digital nomads in customer service roles.

Hi everyone,

I currently work as a customer service representative (remote) and use Five9 for handling incoming calls, scheduling appointments, and confirming donation information. I'm considering working remotely abroad part-time but have a few concerns:

  1. Internet Requirements: My job requires an Ethernet connection with at least 100 Mbps speed. Has anyone successfully set up a reliable connection abroad that meets these specs? Any tips on accommodations or tools like travel routers?
  2. Five9 Performance: Does Five9 work smoothly outside the U.S.? Are there latency or connectivity issues I should anticipate?
  3. Company Policies: Has anyone had to navigate discussing this kind of setup with their employer? Any tips for ensuring compliance? I have not seen anything on our company policy pdf that mentions working from abroad is explicitly prohibited.

I’d love to hear from anyone with experience using Five9 or similar tools while traveling or living abroad. Recommendations, advice, and insights are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Question Digital Nomading with a work cell phone

The next time, I won't get away with a slap on the wrist so I need to be vigilant in how I get this done. I've thought of a few ideas on how to get away with this. I very rarely receive phone calls, and SMS may only be for secondary MFA. The phone is managed through an MDM so I'm sure IT can turn "Location Services" on my iPhone remotely if they want to investigate. I'm also sure that the MDM will show when my phone is roaming. I also do not trust that AirPlane mode will never turn itself off, just like Wi-Fi turning itself back on after 24 hours.

I convinced my IT department to give me a physical RSA token so I don't need my mobile phone to log in remotely to my work network, thus 99% no need to open my mobile phone. The number of times I need to use the phone is very, very limited.

The options I have thought about are:

Leave iPhone in Home Country
I've read somewhere that in the newest version of macOS, you can interact with your iPhone if it is physically plugged in (or AirPlay) to the Mac. I can buy a brand-new Mac Mini for around $500 so it's just the cost of business. I can leave the Mac and phone at my home, or my parent's home.

  1. Buy a new Mac Mini
  2. Connect the iPhone with an official Apple cable to the Mac and enable interactive screen-sharing
  3. Install a remote desktop service on the Mac and allow for external connections
  4. Remotely log into the Mac Mini and access the iPhone as needed. + bonus, can set up shortcuts on my iPhone to forward SMS messages to my personal phone or a secondary email that I can monitor regularly. - I have to regularly check my Mac Mini for any notifications. Not sure if I could also forward Teams notifications to my personal email inbox but I'm sure I can find a solution.

Take iPhone to New Country
Buy a Faraday bag with a window (~$100) that you can see the screen but cannot interact with. The bag I got is velcro and while tight enough, has enough slack to fish in an ethernet cable and charger cable. I do not know if the phone will get hot being in this bag.

  1. Turn all location services off
  2. Put the iPhone on Airplane Mode before leaving the home country
  3. Put iPhone in a Faraday bag
  4. In the new country, plug in an ethernet adapter converter (in my case, it's an iPhone 13, so lightning to camera/USB + USB to ethernet adapter), plugged into my Beryl AX (WireGuard --> my home). + I'd be able to receive any app notifications this way (I can't think of much but it's just a safeguard). - While I can forward calls to my personal phone through the carrier, I can't do so with SMS. I will not be receiving any SMS

How are you guys going about doing this? I want to make the best decision from all possible ideas. I can test with a handful of actual short vacations coming up before making a big leap for another multi-month nomad experience.

Another option I thought about was a combination of both. Remove the SIM card and put it in some old Android in the home country that will auto-forward all calls and SMS to my personal phone and/ or email, and then carry the mobile phone with me to the new country, in a Faraday bag, connected by ethernet. I'm not sure if IT would figure out from the MDM that a SIM card is not present.

Question Best way to transition as a digital nomad for the skill I possess?

Hi everyone, I’m a software developer with 1.5 years of experience, and I want to transition to the digital nomad lifestyle. My goal is to work while traveling the world.

Some paths I’ve considered include:

Building and running my own product.

Setting up a remote-first company.

Freelancing or working as a 2S (software-as-a-service) consultant.

What other options should I explore? Are there specific steps or strategies for finding remote jobs at established companies that support this lifestyle?

I’d appreciate any advice, suggestions, or resources you can share! Thank you in advance.

Question Non-American DNs - let's create a database of all the free (or cheapest) ATMs in each country that we know of

Since as non-Americans, we can't take advantage of Charles Schwab's ATM fee reimbursements, let's list all the best ATMs (including the fee and withdrawal limit if you know it) for each country that we frequent so we know where to go to get our cash.

I'll start:

Brazil

  • Bradesco = R$0 (limit unknown)

Mexico

  • Caja Popular = $21 MXN (8k limit)
  • Inbursa = $22 MXN (7k limit)
  • BanBajio = $22 MXN (7.5k limit)
  • Banca Mifel = $27 MXN (limit unknown)
  • BanCoppel = $29 MXN (10k limit)
  • Citibanamex = $31 MXN (6k limit)

And yes, I've heard of the option to open a Charles Schwab International account, but it's not available to Canadians and I've yet to meet any non-American who has actually opened one, personally

Question EU Tax regimes with very liberal deductions?

What are good, low cost tax regimes in or near the EU with liberal deductions of business expenses and perhaps health/dental expenses?

I like to combine business with pleasure, and to go pay business dinners without having to document in detail who I am eating with etc.
I am thinking of e-resident regimes, and nomad friendly countries like Romania, Bulgarian Croatia...

(I think Estonia is not so good for restaurant expenses)

Question Digital nomading as RN/paramedic? or any job really..

My situation is one where I want to stay abroad for some time, but financially I need to keep working. There is plenty of jobs in my home country, but I just don't want to stay here right now.

I just finished my degree in nursing and paramedicine. I have some work experience already from the ER (1.5 years) and other hospital wards, plus EMS type work. But it seems like a tough degree to be able to be a nomad. Im open to working locally too, but that's a hustle with the permits and such.

I have a lot of work experience from customer service and am handy with computers etc. and was wondering if there are any decent jobs, even pays like 1K a month would help with travelling

Edit. From EU, if it matters

Lifestyle What’s the biggest hurdle you face as a digital nomad?

There are sometimes challenges that you don't even remember the next day, but the others stay with you for a long time potentially changing your approach to being a digital nomad altogether. Or maybe you realize you handled the problem not in an efficient way and there was a much efficient way to handle it. Or maybe you suspect there is a more efficient way you wish you knew, but it is not obvious.

I’m curious to know if there’s any city that doesn’t have good reputation but from your experience, you actually enjoyed your stay there and why you like the city?
