A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join the coordinated mod effort at /r/ModCoord.
Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

In an effort to remove the countless low effort "Is there a DeGoogled rom for my phone?" questions we are requiring anyone creating those types of threads to post here with a reply instead of creating a post. Any posts going forward asking this question will be removed.
The reason we specified above "low effort" is because majority of the posts do not include what OP has researched, or tested, or tried (Thank you to those whom have included such information). Thus in order to help others answer your question, it is strongly encouraged to include the following: Failure to include these may result in you not getting your question answered. Experienced users can only help those DeGoogling if they have the proper information.
1) Your phone: Manufacturer, Model, Version or production details
2) What ROMs did you research?
3) Which ROMs did you install or attempt to install?
4) What problems have you encountered during the install?
5) What problems have you encountered after the install?
6) Why was the previous ROM insufficient to your needs? (If it was a DeGoogled ROM)
PS: Experienced DeGooglers, If you have any suggestions or modifications you believe should be made to this post guide, please reply here. Your experience is valuable and what keeps this sub alive :)

Hi, checked my permissions, and SMS permission is used by Messages, Google Play Services and one hidden app which doesnt show even among system ones.
How do I figure out which is the third app that uses that permission? Thanks

After a simple eyes watch on Data safety from reddit play store, I realized, the app, because of which I ggot so many information and made(teached) me literally to do the impossible is collecting data more than any other apps. I am feeling very very :'( after realizing reddit is also one of other social media. Isn't there any true social media stuff besides reddit actually? Using the web-version, but still, the posts I click and everything are collected? And shared to the third party ffor advertising? Or knowing mass and other type of psychology for future purpose. Etc. What is your views :( ?

Hello everyone,
I would like some advice regarding my Gmail inbox.
Since November I have started receiving hundreds of spam emails, every single day about 100-120 emails arrive, all 100% correctly filtered by Gmail but now I am starting to fear for the security of the account and I don't know if it is the case to change my email address directly.
The phenomenon continues without stopping, there was only a slight decrease, and then exploded again.
I have two-factor authentication active and I have not yet had any login attempts, but having never received even a single spam email, now this explosion makes me fear that something could happen in the future.
I have checked various accounts to which the email is associated but there have been no access violations.
Each associated account has a different password.
I have never given access to third parties to the account and only WhatsApp has access to drive to save the backup.
What do you recommend?
I really don't know whether to proceed with closing the mailbox, with all the inconveniences that this entails, or simply continue to empty the spam folder without interacting with the spam that arrives.
I await your opinion.
Thanks

I downloaded the app and it instantly fetched all the phone numbers from the Google Contacts app. Now I check the contacts details and I see they are saved in my gmail. There is no option of putting in another email. I created a new proton mail account yesterday. Is there a way to save the phone numbers to proton mail?
I can't find any options of import/export or fetching contacts from an email account

I’m in my Google account but I need to access my emails, I don’t have access to either phone numbers for recovery but it won’t give me the option for my recovery email which I do have access to. How can I get back into my account? I’ve tried to call Google but they just use ai and don’t let me speak with an actual person so they are no help at all.

So I know that Google keeps copies of everything that's done through it's websites and other info but what happens when you edit the content? Does it rewrite over the previous copies or just makes a new copy of the edit and stores that effectively storing all the edit logs? Contents like images, notes, docs, etc
And uh another question, what are the odds that the personal info of a random Jake is being read? Like Jake's emails, his photos etc? The population of Google users is kinda huge so I'd assume that not everyone's data is being read into?

i originally asked this question on r/privacy but sadly didnt get the results / help i was looking for.
the original post can be found here.
im looking for a privacy focussed Office Suite for my android phone. i dont really need an office suite for daily use, but i rather need it for niche situations and as a small qol app from time to time.
i allready asked around and the answers i got where that people just used Microsoft Office or Google Office for their phone, they didnt use their phones for such things, people reccomended me to use any note taking app or notepad app for this use and WPS office was reccomended.
sadly, WPS office is a data harvesting suite filled with ads and features locked behind a premium paywall / subscription.
things like Libreoffice and Only office, wich i also use on my laptop, are thankfully a thing on android.. but they are buggy, dont let you edit files and feel clunky to use.
after asking the question on r/privacy, i got told that both googles and microsofts office suites didnt work well if you kill internet access to them with things like Netguard or GrapheneOS. luckely, someone i know had GrapheneOS and tested the apps for me, and as expected they indeed didnt work.
the only other app that was recommended was Collabora, wich also felt clunky and i cant tell how private it is.
do you know any good office suite that is private? it doesnt need to be open source, but that would be nice for people that can actually read source codes (i cant).
if the office suite requires me to kill internet access for it, can someone help me with Netguard, because i dont know enough about it to use it.
thanks in advance and merry christmas
update: i ended up using Collabora, wich is an open source office suite for android (not sure about IOS)

Hey everyone,
As you might know, the Mull browser along with the whole DivestOS project have been discontinued. I’ve been using Mull for the past six months and was honestly shocked to hear it won’t be maintained anymore. It’s such a great browser, and I feel like it’d be a waste to let it just die.
So, I’m thinking about forking it to keep it alive. Of course, this isn’t something I can pull off alone—it’s going to take a lot of time, effort, and the right skills. That’s why I’m looking for others who care about this project and want to help out. If you’re interested, leave a commemt!
And hey, Merry Christmas!

If I de-Google and start using ProtonMail, but still send emails to people on Gmail, does Google still track or read my data?
r/degoogle • u/LowerDoor • 3d ago
For me it was the removal of ublock origin from chrome. Now i use firefox. Also moving away from gmail.
unfortunately i can't move away from youtube or google search the other search engines kinda suck.
But i have 15 computers under my control between home and work now they all use firefox.
Also looking to get away from google authenticator, think i will use yubikey and there Authenticator since it's on iOS and windows.
For password manger i use self hosted vault warden.

I recently bought tickets to a sporting event. Exact delivery of tickets are unknown until after purchase. In the past I was able to download a PDF or provided a web link with a constantly changing QR as my ticket. My last pair of tickets it seems transferring them to a Google Wallet was the only option. I know little about wallets and their workings. Are there other options? I do have Catima, but that just seems to be a QR/Bar code storage. Do I have any options here other than refusing tickets that require Google Wallet?

Sad to see this.
Notes from Tavi
December marks 10 years of DivestOS!
There were over 7,000 git commits created in this time.
I believe the projects were highly successful in their goals, however this month will mark the end.
DivestOS and its apps will not receive any further updates.
Hypatia and Carrion will no longer receive database updates.
The non-mobile Divested projects (eg. Brace, D-WRT, real-ucode, and DNS blocklists) will continue to be maintained.
Most of our forum threads will be closed and the DivestOS XMPP chat rooms will also be turned off.
Donations will no longer be accepted and all recurring donations will be cancelled.
Thank you to all the users, contributors, and donors for this time. -Tavi
