Advice Why does my cat just stare at me for minutes on end?

My black cat here will just jump onto the table while I’m watching TV and just stare at me sometime up to an hour. FYI, she follows me everywhere and wakes me up in the morning. For some reason I’m her favorite of everyone. Is something wrong or is she just weird? Should I do something?

Advice Craziest DoorDash tip of all time; ADVICE NEEDED

Post image
25.8k Upvotes

So I was out doordashing earlier tonight when I got to a certain couple’s house. While giving them their order, the husband basically shoved this kitten into my hands, saying they found it in the shed and couldn’t take care of it. Bleeding heart that I am, I couldn’t fight back much. Upon taking it home and getting a closer look, I think it’s about 4 weeks old. I’ve haphazardly thrown together a room for it in the bathroom with a small litter pan and plenty of towels to cozy up in. We were also lucky enough to be able to get some formula from a local emergency vet hospital. I have never taken care of a kitten this young. I have literally just moved into this apartment less than a week ago and also have my adult cat here who, unsurprisingly, is not thrilled about our new little tenant. Please give all the advice you can offer! As an aside, I’ve decided to call it Dasher (both to reference the reindeer and our fateful meeting lol). I tried my best to sex it, but due to how fluffy it is plus the fact that it had a bit of poop crusted to its bottom (that I did manage to clean up), I just am not able to tell at this time. Thank you all for whatever helpful tips you can offer!

Advice Do Cats protect people from Ghosts?

Post image
16.9k Upvotes

I’m nearly 40yo and have had many experiences with Ghosts. Too many to count.

I was chatting to my husband and said that I wonder why it all suddenly stopped about 15 years ago? It clicked the next day. I’d gotten a few rescue cats around 15yrs ago. They’re still with us, happy and healthy old cats.

Do cats protect people from ghosts is my question? It seems like mine have. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Mum had cats and they used to hiss and growl at her ghosts.

Advice Sometimes my cat holds my hand. Is she showing affection (as I'd like to think) or is it not that deep?

Post image
35.6k Upvotes

Sometimes when I'm hanging out next to her reading or whatever, she'll reach out a paw and put it on my hand/wrist/arm. She'll leave it there for quite a while (unless I move). This picture is from earlier this evening when she left her paw on my wrist for just over ten minutes. She doesnt pat me or ask for pets or vocalize or anything - for most of the time earlier today, she didn't even look at me! After a while, she silently withdraws her paw and goes about her business.

I've never seen another cat do this, not even my foster kittens even though at that age they're absolute gluttons for cuddles. Obviously I'd love to think she's showing affection. It happens pretty often, so it would be nice to think she's as crazy about me as I am about her 😻 ... but maybe it's wishful thinking. Any cat behavior experts know what this is? (And does anyone else have a cat who is in the habit of holding their hand?)

Shift work and a cat. He is 1 1/2 and goes absolutely crazy when I get home. But after a night set I just go right to sleep and this little guy just wants to play. I feel guilty but I don’t want to give him away, then I’d have no one. But maybe he would be happier.

Advice Found a cat in my backyard.

Thumbnail

Found this cat in my backyard. Someone dumped him or ran away. He has no outside skills, I heard him bumping around last night and I thought it was wild animal. He was shivering in the bushes this morning. Very docile, didn’t even hiss at my dog growling at him. Didn’t put a fight at all when I picked him up and was immediately interested in going inside. Warmed up immediately. Already loves my two kids one who is a touchy 9 month old.

I posted him on a neighborhood page, so hopefully someone will claim him. It really sucks because my dog hates cats with a passion and shelters in my area won’t take cats in without interviews and waiting periods. They basically want us to find him a home first. This Happened two years ago too when someone obviously dumped a kitty and I had to lure it out my neighbors engine compartment. But it was a young kitten so it was easy to find a nice family for him.

Advice Three pet sitters have forgotten to give water, wtf can I do

Post image

I have three cats and travel kind of often since I live abroad. I have now had three pet sitters in A ROW forget to give my cats water. I'll come home to full food bowls, clean litter boxes, even medication was administered this last trip, and yet, all three water bowls will be bone dry. I can slightly understand forgetting because they don't need refilled everyday but wtf can I do to remind pet sitters that my cats also need water to survive?! The water bowls are right next to their food bowls and one is a water fountain that gets noisy when empty so like?? I will tell on myself and add that all pet sitters thus far have been family friendsthat ive paid, so maybe I need to cough up the money and pay a "pro"??? (very expensive here but rip if I gotta)

Advice I just got George yesterday and he disappeared from my 1 bedroom apartment during the 2 hours that I was gone this morning. What should I do?

I guess I need to put cameras up. He had half a plate of food that was eaten when I got back so he definitely didn’t run out the door when I left. I’ve pulled everything out from under my bed and my closet searching for him, but it seems like he’s no longer inside the apartment. It’s just crazy that he’s gone, no one should’ve been in here to let him out.

Advice I’m a 30 year old male and I’ve never owned an animal as an adult until now. What the fuck?

11.0k Upvotes

Edit 2: Jesus guys thank you so much for all the words. I’m gonna try to read them all over the day and take what I can in to make her life easier and more enjoyable

I just adopted a 7 year old cat last week. I have so many questions and this is such a wild experience.

First of all, I love this fucking thing and if you’re reading this I’d kill you to save her life if I had to, no idea I’d feel that way.

Second, she has an entire room of hers with all sorts of goodies. Toys and boxes and a tree and a water fountain and food and little tunnels and all sorts. Some reason she chooses to lay in my bed and drink from the toilet if I don’t catch her.

Third, she won’t eat the daily amount of food unless I carry her to the food and watch her eat it. She has not liked any treat or wet food I’ve offered, I’ve spent like $100 buying small packs of stuff. I’ll happily spend 1000 if that’s what it takes to get her food she likes due to point number 1.

Fourth, she will not use her scratching posts. I have two posts and a scratch flat cardboard thing but she chooses to completely scratch the fuck out of my couch.

Fifth, she simultaneously seems to be so comfortable and feel safe with me while also being scared of me. When I’m in bed or gaming at night she will scoot right up next to be and roll to her back and fall asleep touching me. She had to have contact with me. If I scoot she scoots with me. However if I stand up or walk around getting ready, she’s scared of me and retreats.

Sixth, she makes lots of biscuits on any blanket she steps on I hope that’s healthy behavior.

Seventh, she meows a tiny bit if I touch her when she wasn’t expecting it. Idk if this is a hello or a fuck off.

Eighth, she comes up to me a lot and I go to pet her head and she flinches away, but then when I pull my hand back she nudges her head into my hand demanding pets. If I stop pets and then go to pet again, she flinches again and repeats. She also has no problem with belly rubs when she rolls over next to me, I had always heard this activated attack mode.

Ninth, if I pick her up she doesn’t like it. I’ve watched the videos on like how to do it the best way but she wiggles. But picking her up is the only way to get her to eat because I have to sit her down next to her food.

Any advice helps please thank you this is new to me.

Edit: she also does not play. I have tried the rods, catnip toys, little dangly things, and basically anything you find on a pet isle. She will occasionally trot around trying to catch a laser. But it’s short lived until she loses interest. I rescued her from the pound. She was brought in with fleas and had “anxiety”. I’m not sure what she went through before she found me.

Advice Does you cat sleep in your bed? Is it safe?

Thumbnail

I told my teacher about my new cat, and I told her that she sleeps in my bed (all the time, that's her favourite place). She said that my cat should sleep on the floor because it's unsafe, I would get toxoplasmosis and go blind. I am a first time cat owner. My cat is a indoor cat she has been dewormed, and I washed her when I brought her home. So my question is, was she right? Or is she paranoid? What do you think? Does your cat sleep next to you? She spends 80% of the time on my bed so it would be hard to change that (Share pictures of your cat sleeping if you want)

Advice My cat fell off the balcony and i'm heartbroken

My cat fell off my balcony and my heart is broken...

Suzy (1 y/o) fell off the balcony while i was working, while my roommate was home. We went to the hospital, she got a splint (the consultation+ splint + X rays were about 1000). She needs an amputation that can vost between 3000-4000$cad. I brought her back home to think a little between paying and euthanasia... when i got back home, my roommate gave me the nastiest look and said "it's inhumane to let a being suffer" referencing to my cat. I became SO MAD.

am i cruel for bringing suzy back home? What should i do, i have no money but love her so mucccch (and my friend raised 1400$ overnight WHICH IS AMAZING and could cover part of it). People say to me it's dumb spending so much on an animal and she'll have a shitty quality of life as a tripod... I think she would strive, she is so young and energetic... Has anyone gone through a similar thing?

Thanks for listening <3 (reading actually)

Advice Adopters Remorse

This is Eddie, he’s 6 months old!

Last week I (M 22) drove from New York to Tucson Arizona, it was a 5 day trip. The morning of day 3, I’m walking back to my car and this dude runs up on me at this pit stop on the interstate highway! He jumps in my car, I take him to the vet, confirm he has no owner, 0 medical issues, and is still a kitten.

I’m a dog person, but he’s the perfect cat. He talks to me, sits on me, sleeps with me, and loves me in all the ways a dog does. He’s even good on a leash! Like wtf.

Well yesterday, like day 3 of having him, it all just hits me. If I ever want to travel, do anything, go anywhere, it now has to include and revolve around this animal. And if he lives a full 15 years, I will have this cat when I am 37. My potential kids will probably know this cat. And that scares me, like honestly.

I love this dude. I just moved across the country all by myself, alone for the first time, and he’s really made it not feel lonely. He’s so cool… so why do I feel so much anxiety over a future with him? I’m sure this is normal, but now I feel guilty over feeling this way. It’s all a little overwhelming, and is preventing me from processing my other big life changes, any advice?
