Advice Cat refuses to use closed in litterbox so I had to improvise
I think I did a pretty good job, and my cat seems to not mind it :)

Way to much litter in that. You are wasting it and causing yourself more work. Great surroundings though

you might try a top entry litter box. All of my cats have adapted to that just fine, and in fact I’ve taken the lid off, they just hop in. A couple of my litter boxes are just storage plastic tubs with no lid. No scattering of litter. It’s wonderful.

Cats want to see their surroundings when they do their business, so closed cat trays are not good. You've done a fine job here, but the tray is overfull. Carry on, you've got this!

You don't need to fill the box full of litter, it will create less mess if you only do a couple inches.
