Yeah, there's all sorts of complex engineering that's plenty reliable. Complexity doesn't necessarily correlate with reliability. Current BMW engines are some of the most reliable being made, and Mercedes diesel engines in the 70's-90's are arguably the most reliable engines ever made.
This whole notion that German engineering is unreliable is a complete myth.
I don't think that's really true of modern BMW engines since the B48/B58 family. I haven't heard that water pump failures are common on those engines, and I have a B48 so I've done lots of research on it.
My ea888 also yet has to have a waterpump issue and i already have it quite a while. They are reliable as long as you look after them granted if they are old they will break like my E39 5 Series but thats not because its unreliable its because it has 211k miles on it and is 26 years old im guessing even toyotas will have issues by then.
