IMHO Nothing beats having your own villa with a private pool. You can rent some absolutely ridiculous homes at a fraction of the cost versus other geographies. You can even find staffed ones where they will make you an incredible breakfast.

Agreed. We had a beautiful villa on Gili, private pool, set back from the beach. Absolute fucking bliss.

I fear you exaggerate ... you can get a very nice room indeed for $US150 per night, but nowhere near the "best" available in Bali - they can run to $US2,000 per night, and probably more than that.

Any recommendations?

Try this Taman Dhamawangsa Suites , nice one for couples . Rates depend on season and traffic. I didn't stay there during my trip as rates were high during peak season. I stayed in holiday inn express.

For a very tidy resort right on the beach, we can recommend the Griya Santrian in the heart of Sanur, and most rooms will be just within your budget, including an excellent buffet breakfast.

Not sure about that. I was paying $500+ for the cheapest room at The Ritz Carlton.

I like nice hotels, and there are plenty in a higher price category than Ritz Nusa Dua.

Mandapa Ritz Carlton in Ubud is $2,000+ for cheapest room.

Raffles in Jimbaran is about that too. I think Four Seasons is a little less, maybe $1500. You’re looking at $150 per person for dinner maybe there.

Both are great. It really depends on what you’re after.

If you like a bit of socialising around the pool then a hotel is your best bet. If you’re like me and prefer a quieter pool environment then go an airbnb with a private pool.

Not a heap of hotels have rooms with private pools though there are a few, so if you like a combo of both then search for one of those.

I’ve found a lot of the time, the absolutely unreal hotels are located in worse areas (require 10-15 min drive to get into a main area), which is fine if you’re totally into the hotel. Airbnbs are great man, the ones we went to came with breakfast and the owners were great always

Yes so true!

I guess it’s because the bigger amazing hotels are more secluded and often have quite a lot of land, so are more spaced out

Dont go through Airbnb. You cant trust any of the reviews there. Go through some other platform if you want to rent a Villa.

Also, split your time between villa and resort. Enjoy both.

What other platform?

Agoda, Bookings, google hotels and pick vacation homes as a filter. Google reviews are more trustworthy (not by much but at least better than Airbnb)

I’ve done both big resorts and air bnb in Bali and both have their perks, guess is depends do you want privacy and peace and quiet or the benefits of pool bars, restaurants ect it all I did a week in a resort then a few days in a villa which was perfect

Honestly Homestay for the win. It was so peaceful and the family was so incredibly kind, way better than the few days I spent in a boujee hotel

Villa is good. If you want, you can even rent a decent villa without pool for 1 month at 600$/ month

When / where are you going?

Note that smaller private pools in villas, apartments, and some hotel rooms can be uncomfortably cold - if they don't have a lot of direct sun over the day. They are small in area, but can still be quite deep, so they are much harder to heat up to a nice warmth.

It's worth checking carefully how far the property is from the beach and the main dining precinct - you don't want to be too isolated, unless you're happy getting a ride every time you wish to head out. Always read the reviews.

villa within walking distance to food of some/any description. Then in order of priority to you.... air con, shared/private pool, walking distance/short grab ride to :beach, nature stuff & yoga etc if thats what you want, nightlife, surf, shopping,... but make sure you have 3 of your top priorities pretty damn close. You'll miss out if you have to get a ride every single thing you do. Walking the local area to and from things is everything to me :) enjoy!

There are different websites to the same properties. Airbnb is just another room booking site, there are hardly any people just renting out a spare room to guests.

Hyatt, it's so much less stress and more hygienic in my personal opinion. I've had air bnbs and got so sick. Hyatt was next level. Massive hotel to relax in without getting haggled
