Elephants are powerfully social creatures and they always respond immediately to any trouble with the calf.

Even if they don't need help, it teaches the calf that the herd is always there and they can rely on help from their family.

Imagine being born into the african savannah with extant megafauna (bad) and you open your eyes and the loving trunks of like, 100 tons of aunts and nieces and sisters and your mom welcome you to be cuddled and loved until you are too big to fail (good).
