Physician Responded My Dad is dieing at home of cancer. Can you explain this please?

My Dad is dieing at home of brain/stomach cancer. Can you explain this please?

My question is, how/why may he have appeared to be passing only to bounce back by the end of the day?

So my father is towards the end and he is bed bound at home unable to walk now, lost use of an arm and has been very tired and hard to understand for a week or so now.

Today we were convinced he was on the way out. He started the morning by having one or two chocolates and sweets. But went downhill. Complained of stomach pain so we gave him a small dose of Oramorph, one oral syringe.

Mid morning he went very very bad. Making all sorts of noises, saying things we couldn't understand and fading in and out. It was so bad we were all convinced he was going so said our goodbyes. He stayed like this into late afternoon.

We have nurses 3 times a day. They saw him morning, bad but fine. Midday very bad on the way out and then evening.

At their evening visit he was talking like he had been previously in the week. He ate some light food, was back to being as aware as he had been before the turn and then watched a TV show with us until 2100.

Graphic pic* What is this? 2 weeks post natural miscarriage

Age 33, female, 5’7, 135, no known health issues or concerns

Confirmed I was having a miscarriage on 12/12. Natural miscarriage, no medicine or d&c. Been waiting for everything to pass and my hcg to drop. Last hcg draw was 147 a few days ago. Still been bleeding lightly, but not much. Passed this tonight. It was firm and I would assume tissue. Is this the gestational sac? I’ve only passed a bit of tissue about a week ago. I go to the doctor on Monday. Sorry for the graphic picture in comments

Physician Responded I think I've lost my wife, and doctors can't figure out why..

Right now my wife is critically ill she is catatonic, and is fighting for her life.

It all started in beginning of August my wife started acting different and was kind of going into a brain fog of sorts and was unable to talk and do basic things. I took her to the hospital and they did a CT scan and found that she had a craniipharyngiomas. They rushed her down to a bigger hospital because the hospital we have cant handle things like that.

The tumor was was blocking one of her ventricles and was causing her cfs to build up in pressure causing her confusion. The doctors ended up performing a craniotomy to resect the tumor. They were only able to get about 35% of it out without causing damage to anything else. Since that surgery she has suffered massive confusion delusions sometimes hallucinations major loss of memory and a lot of the time feels like it's dementia. Expressed my concern to the doctors but was never really heard apparently this is a pretty common side effect of a resection of a tumor quite close and or on the pituitary gland. She spent 38 days in the NICU. And all together 58 days in the hospital. The tumor was nothing compared to the problem she has now. She has diabetes insipidus she has adrenal deficiency where she has to take demopressin she has panhyperthyroidism. The problem was they use the diabetes insipidus as a reason for her confusion which it comes to find out is a very good reason higher sodium levels can cause confusion. She finally was released home where I took care of her and about 3 weeks into that she started to lose her mind again. I took her in and you're sodium levels were high so she's back in the hospital for 3 more weeks. Then she was released home again.

She started her radiation therapy and was 3 weeks into it when she's tired to lose herself again. But this time the symptoms were a little different she was twitching a lot couldn't hold things because it fall out of her hands, she constantly was peeing and pooping herself, her ability to walk diminished, could barely talk and if she did it was slurred words as if she was drunk. And once again I took her to the hospital but the small hospital near me where she was diagnosed with a UTI. She was put on antibiotics and finished them off but nothing was helping her radiation therapy doctor said take a few days off and see if she gets better but she didn't.

Now this is where it gets bad I took her down to the bigger hospital ER. There she was brought back immediately with signs of hyperthermia at this point she could not talk so I had to do all the talking for her telling the doctors what was wrong and what had been going on. She was immediately put up into the ICU unit where she was diagnosed with an acute pancreatic, c diff because of all the antibiotics. She has been there for a week and has had every test known to man it seems like done on her. Majority of her physical problems have been alleviated or are within range of being better. Are sodium levels are perfect all her blood work is good she keeps running fevers every now and then but nothing extreme. But she is gone she is completely canatonic. She just grunts and has issues breathing her face almost looks droopy on one side so they've tested her for strokes doing eegs everyday constant blood work up and the doctors just can't figure out why she's stuck. They've done lumbar punctures to get the CSF and tested it for infections and viruses and nmdas and autoimmune diseases and nothing they can't figure it out she has been put on critically ill for a week and that scares me we have three younger kids who I've been taking care of since she's been in the hospital for the last 4 months. All night when I get home I research possible things you could be but I am not a doctor. I get every single test, panel, progress note, care notes doctor's notes to my phone and believe me there is a lot of them but I read them to make sure everything's all right. I am afraid she's not coming back. I was afraid before because we're delusions and memory loss not knowing who our kids names are or where we live for all the delusions on a daily basis. I have become used to them and can see when things start to go downhill and that's what I usually take her to the hospital but whatever she has now is different I feel as if her brain has been fried. Extreme long story short the doctors are confused and if you mean asked me to reach out on Reddit for any possibilities or solutions. If any neurologists or doctors are reading this and have any possible diagnosis reply to me and I will let you see all the blood work all the progress notes so you can see what's been done and hopefully through this instead of a team of 20 people working on a solution maybe I could expand it to 100 through Reddit. I'm desperate I don't want to lose my wife and and the way she is now I would be unable to care for her.

Physician Responded My mom took my medication, can I get a refill?

I was diagnosed with Flu A two days after my brother was. My mom DEFINITELY has the flu but refused to go to the doctor's. Today I was given a 5 day course of Tamiflu.

My mom told me that she's finally going to the doctor's tomorrow morning, and I caught her taking one of my Tamiflus. She said because she definitely has the flu that I can just have one of her pills tomorrow.

I'm really upset about this. I suffer from major health anxiety and I'm worried she won't be given Tamiflu tomorrow, and then I'm down a pill. Will the pharmacy give me the missing pill if she isn't given Tamiflu? Or am I just going to have to be down a pill?

Female Catheter Removal Negligence or Typical?

I am 28f and I had to have a catheter in for two days due to a rectal impaction. I was incredibly mortified and felt so terrible to put the doctor and nurses through having to deal with disimpacting and didn’t want to make a fuss but the catheter removal has been the painful and traumatic experience of my life.

Initially when they were putting it in, the two nurses didn’t use a gel and a third nurse came after and asked them why they didn’t use it, and they said that its only for male insertion since female internal anatomy is too slippery. She got angry and told me that she was sorry for their actions and unfortunately this is a result of medical patriarchy. It was really awful but I was glad to have the relief and was grateful for the healthcare.

The removal yesterday was 100 times worse. The nurse had me sitting upright with my legs straight out and was taking a urine sample before starting removal. She then told me to breathe in while I was still in the same position and yanked out so hard and quickly then left the room right away. I was shaking and and couldn’t move for 20 minutes.

Is this normal for a removal? It feels like I am urinating shards of glass and the area burns so badly

edit: not sure if nurse was referring to lidocaine jelly or numbing gel, she said a gel that was supposed to be used was not

Physician Responded Why do I walk on the balls of my feet?

I walk on the balls of my feet. I am not sure why. I have done it for a while I think but people recently started making fun of me for it. It is because there are some memes that show people walking like this.

The memes make it look stupid. Why am I walking like this? Is it a habit?

Thank you for any help. F19, 5'3, 110lbs no medical conditions

20M I'm 300 pounds and can see a pulse in my abdomen through my stomach fat.

Here's the story for you, for a few months I've had palpitations, figured they'd go away but when they didn't I went to my physician, this was about a month ago. She sent me for an electrocardiogram but she believed them to be heart PVEs, good enough for me so I went home, got news from over the phone that ecg was clean. Would be great if it ended there, right?

Palpitations kept subtley getting worse and more common and I kept ignoring them til they started hurting a week ago and I couldn't ignore them no more. I go into the er last night and they give me another ECG, comes back clean, blood work too, yet another doctor tells me it's probably PVEs. Its stops hurting and I go home, I realize I can feel my pulse through my stomach when I touch it, I can see it jiggle my stomach fat. I know about aortic aneurism, that it won't show on bloodwork or ECGs, that it could potentially cause my symptoms.

Should I be rushing back to the er?

Why would my iron drop so low within 6 months?

Upvotes

28F. I have an array of symptoms. Have posted on here a few times. So far I have -elevated hematocrit -elevated platelet -high eosinophils - abnormal rheumatoid factor IGG - abnormal rheumatoid factor IGM

My iron in the past has been normal .. but I’ve had “low” Ferratin & had to supplement with ferratin vitamins.

What would cause my total iron to be 174 in march.. 140 in June…. And now 67 as of today. (I’ll post my labs in comments)

Physician Responded Unbearable foot pain, gets worse after eating duck meat.

I've got an interesting conundrum. 29M, have sprained my right ankle 8 times. Slight overweight, taking quetiapine for sleep and venlafaxine for social anxiety. Family history of arthritis. Working and active.

Once in a while ( once a month or during a cold) i have some sort of flare-up in my right ankle. There is some swelling, skin-level discolouration ( like slight small bruises). the pain seems to be beneath the skin, gets way worse with movement and standing on it. The pain usually goes away when i've moved around a bit. Sometimes, like now during a respiratory infection, it can get unbearable. Like an 8 out of 10 just lying in bed with the foot elevated. It gets so bad it makes me groan. Heat makes it worse, cold helps a bit. Compression helps a bit. Just touching the skin hurts like crazy. Sodium Heparin topical gel helps while topical pain relievers don't do anything.

Gets worse with alcohol, especially wine. Taking aspirin for a headache can make it worse. The worst thing for it is duck meat. If there is slight discomfort in the joint and i eat duck meat, then the next morning it's horrible. No such effect with chicken or beef or a salad or pizza.

It feels like the "tubes" (pardon my uneducated medical terms) the tendons move within are inflamed and sort of get stuck.

One time i was limping in a parking lot during a flareup and twisted my ankle a bit. It hurt for 30s but then i continued without limping. The pain went away after the misstep and did not return until the next flareup. Would arthritis go away from slight trauma like that?

So, what could this be? Plain old gout? Tenasynovitis (sometimes my left elbow feels similar)? Arthritis?
Is there a chance this could be corrected with surgery? What do ya'll think?

Anal bleeding w/ history of colon cancer - ER visit warranted? NSFW

26m 183lbs 5'10

I have a history of stage 4 colon cancer with 2 surgeries done (partial colectomy and intenstinal rerouting of some sort). I'm currently on Keytruda and my last CT scan showed no tumors (about 6 months ago).

I'm also on Entyvio for IBD caused by Keytruda. Today when I used the restroom, when I wiped afterwards, I saw blood on the toilet paper. In total, I probably lost a couple of teaspoons (not much).

I've never seen visible blood before and I'm sort of freaking out right now. I did a bodyweight workout today with squats/lunges and walked for an hour earlier. Do you think that it's possible that I tore something or is it likely related to my cancer?

Should I go to the ER or wait a day or two and monitor?

Thanks!

Serotonin syndrome risk?

Hi there, I’m a 30 year old female and I’ve been on 25 mg sertraline for 10 years. (I also take 25mg Metoprolol and 88mcg levothyroxine.) my husband and I are sick and I just took 20ml of Mucinex Fast Max which has 20mg dextromethorphan in it. I knew the potential risk of serotonin syndrome and didn’t realize that this medicine had dextromethorphan until after I took it. I haven’t taken my sertraline since last night around 11:30pm and I’m now waiting until the morning to take my next dose that I’d normally take right now. Am I going to be okay? I’m a bit of a hypochondriac (hence the anxiety meds lol) so I wanted to check with you guys before falling asleep. Thanks so much!

Physician Responded I Keep Peeing Blood Clots???

I’m 19F around 5’2 and 110 lbs. I’ve recently taken a plan B and strangely the onset was around the time I took it. I recently stopped smoking weed, I use nicotine in the mornings, however I used to drink heavily for about a year (I’d finish a 1.75L bottle of 40% liquor in a day or two by myself) and I drank everyday throughout the day. As of currently, I take no medications but I have a history of frequent rounds of antibiotics for pretty chronic UTIs.

I felt the onset of a UTI a few weeks ago and I started drinking lots of water, stopped drinking alcohol (I only drink wine with dinner or at bedtime occasionally), and took supplements. My pain has gone away, but for two or three weeks or so I’ve been peeing blood clots and brownish pebble looking things. My pee also smells weird. It smells like dog pee. It’s not cloudy or dark though. It’s been light yellow or clear but with streaks of blood or clots. I don’t have any urgency or any kind of burning sensation so I don’t believe they are kidney stones. I don’t think it’s an infection either since I don’t have a fever or any abdominal or back pain. Please help.

Naturally low bmi?

Upvotes

19 AFAB height 5'5 weight 98lbs

Hi, I'm someone who has always been naturally skinny for all my life but I'm starting to become concerned that something might be wrong with me after paying attention to weighing myself. I'm not someone who worries about my weight ever and I don't diet in any way-- I eat whatever I want whenever. As in breakfast lunch and dinner and frequent snacks. but lately I've noticed I'm weighing in at under 100lbs consistently despite being average in height-- this definitely isn't a normal stature and upon looking up my bmi it's quite low and associated with actual anorexics. I'm definitely skinny but I've never had anyone be concerned about my weight physically. I don't look emaciated or anything. Or at least no one has expressed this to me. Is this unhealthy for sure? Do I need to try and gain weight-- I'm honestly happy with how I look. I'm not sure if I should be doing anything because when I eat I eat until I am full so it would be difficult to eat more than I already do. I wonder if it's possible for someone to naturally be this light or if I need to seek medical attention that there's an underlying condition stopping me from gaining weight. I also don't exercise a lot and most of my exercise comes from walking a few miles sometimes.

What the F is wrong with me?

31F here, only major medical history is a POTS diagnosis this year and PACs on several holter monitor (usually in bigeminy). Tonight when I was walking out of the bathroom my husband asked me what the heck was wrong with my lips and when I looked in the mirror it was like my lips had completely lost all color and the outside edges looked greenish blue. However, being a respiratory therapist I’m not immediately freaked because I’m not SOB or anything and when I check my pulse ox I’m 99% on RA so obviously not hypoxic. Two minutes later lips look completely normal. Any ideas on what the heck that could have been?

Strange “rash” whenever I’m ill

Upvotes

25M

So whenever I get a cold, flu, Covid etc. I get a very strange rash on my hands and feet. The rash doesn’t hurt, nor does it itch or anything of the kind. It is a purely aesthetic problem, I’m not concerned by the aesthetics of it but I would like to know what exactly is causing this.

Thank you! Pictures in comments

Physician Responded My child 3.5f has been very fatigued for the past 4 days

Hi all- my 3.5 year old daughter had RSV two weeks ago and got over it but seems to be really fatigued these past few days. She has been sleeping 11-12 hours each night and napping for a couple of hours throughout the day. She is no longer congested or has a fever. Not sure if this is related to RSV or not? Her diet has never been good as she is extremely picky and will not take any multivitamins. She has been eating less than usual as well. She doesn’t have much of a medical history besides the usual cold, flu, and ear infections as she has been a relatively healthy child. What could be causing her fatigue?

I cannot eat fermented food without feeling awful

26F 5’9” 200lbs, United States I take lexapro, levothyroxine, Ritalin (prescribed), birth control, an antihistamine, vitamin D, and a fiber gummy.

The last few years I gradually stopped drinking because my tolerance seemed to be getting lower, and I thought it was just due to the meds I was taking. However, a little over a year ago, I made a baked cheesecake with some Irish cream in it. I took it to school in my lunch and was feeling awful after lunch and didn’t know why. I finally realized it was the cheesecake. Then I got a reaction with a roast I made with apple cider vinegar. Then kimchi. Tofu, beer-battered appetizers, Thai peanut sauce, sourdough bread, blue cheese. The list goes on. My symptoms are like a sudden headache at the front of my forehead, feeling feverish, and then feeling hungover. Depending on the food or the amount I’ve ingested, it can make me feel hungover for almost 24 hours.

Some extra info: I went to grad school in the Midwest and stayed in a house with mold in just about every room for three years. I developed asthma in the last two years as well. I had bad bouts of brain fog in the winter time before getting on the Levo. I lost my appetite in early 2023 and lost 10-15 pounds after I stopped taking an antihistamine but got my appetite back after I started taking it again. I got appendicitis and my appendix taken out in fall 2022. In 2019 I contracted chlamydia and then chronic BV and was on antibiotics for six months to get rid of it. My digestion was never the same after that. I went to the allergist who told me I was allergic to dust mites and trees but no food. He gave me an inhaler and told me to do an online alcohol intolerance test. (I didn’t do it)

Please help me. Yes, I can avoid the foods but the reaction is so extreme that it makes me worried. I want to enjoy a bowl of miso ramen again. I can go without drinking but I don’t want to have to worry about everything I eat that I don’t make myself.

Muscle Stiffness When Drinking

Hi!

I am a 26 year old female, white, of middle eastern descent-- I've struggled with this for as long as I can remember. Whenever I drink alcohol, I will feel this random stiffness in my muscles. usually shoulders/neck/upper arms, and then part of my legs, mostly glutes. It lasts about half hour, and then I can feel loose and tipsy.

I don't really drink much anymore, but this sensation happens to me when I drink Kombucha! Which has such a negligible amount of alcohol. Any Idea what this could be? I'm wondering about intolerance, an enzyme I might be lacking, or some central nervous system hypersensitivity. Should I be worried?

Vaginal bleeding, is this enough to go to the RE? NSFW

51 years old, pre menopausal, 4'11", 140 pounds. No meds related to coagulation. This happened last December 10th, I started my period and it was very abondant , I had my period for the last 40 years and I never experienced this kind of bleeding outside giving birth. Between the 2 pictures there is 10 minutes and it wasnt at the worst of it. I know that you can't really have a good idea of how much blood it really was because it is in water. Since then, I saw a dr, the iron levels were low and I am having iron infusion on schedule in addition to an ultrasound on the 31st. My question is, if I start bleeding this much, should I go to the ER (is it an emergency worthy of going to the ER? I feel like my period is about to come back again because of the cramps I am feeling right now and I don't have fast access to a family dr.

Spotty vision

Upvotes

Hiii. You know when you stare at the sun for too long and you get spots in your vision for a short while? I keep getting this in my right eye sporadically. I’ll go through 3-4 day patches where it happens 10-20 times a day. They’ll last between 15-60 seconds and then it fades away. Has been happening for the last few months. Sometimes I will go weeks without it happening at all before it’s starts happening again. I thought it could be diet related but I can’t seem to pinpoint what might be impacting it. It happens at any given moment, whether I’m sitting, standing, lying down, walking, not moving at all - doesn’t seem to common thread. No other symptoms I don’t think.

bladder issues

Upvotes

i’m 17F and sometimes i have an overreactive bladder. most of the times i urinate a normal amount of times but sometimes, after drinking just one sip of water, i’ll need to pee like 10 minutes later. my bladder feels very full too even though i only took a small sip. what could be the problem?
