ADVICE 2000 Toyota Tundra vs. 2011 Subaru Forester

Both cars cost about the same.

The Tundra has 215k miles on it. Extended cab. Has a shell. Appears to be in good condition.

The Forester has 115k miles on it. Appears to be in good condition.

Can anyone please help provide some insights on how to think about this? I have zero mechanical skills. The truck is probably my preference, but I am a little worried that it may require a lot more repair work because of its age and mileage?

Thank you!

It appears that you have answered your question yourself. The Subaru would likely be a better vehicle, given that the maintenance schedule has been adhered to. Most people think of a car as the extension of their personality. This is the human condition- listen to reason, or fold to your ego.

I appreciate you putting it in those terms, it’s definitely something to consider, whether the truck feels more functional or superficially enticing.

I would have ambitions to convert the truck bed into a sleepable bed situation, and take it camping. But I am concerned that the age and mileage of the truck might make it too unreliable for camping trips. So that’s why I’m posting, to see if anyone has a knee jerk reaction to one or the other of those vehicles—like “oh no, those first gen Tundras really start to fall off a cliff at the 200k mark” or something along those lines.

"I have zero mechanical skills."

A 24yr old Tundra is probably not the way to go. Even Yotas require maintenance and repair, and if you're paying shop labor for everything, that will add up quickly. The 2011 Forester is no spring chicken either, but half the age and half the miles.
