Other The best part of a shower is an eye rinse
I love rinsing out my eyes. I like to leave it to last because it feels nice and it’s my favourite part of a shower. I turn the temperature down too, which makes it even better to have fresh, cool water running over my eyes. Makes me feel like my eyes are two river rocks. It’s just pleasant and I look forward to it. Nothing feels as clean as my eyes do when I wash. My friend thinks this is freak behaviour but if I ever get chemicals in my eyes and need an emergency eye wash, I will be prepared.
Edit: I figured there must be some reason I shouldn’t do this (otherwise why wouldn’t more people do it?) but I never checked, which is foolish on my part. But, after the many messages telling me it’s unsafe, I will attempt to stop, as sad as that is. Thank you, everyone!

FYI, subjecting your eyes to water that doesn’t have the equivalent amount of saline as normal tears can literally damage the surface cells of your eye. Your lack of ability to feel that discomfort is a dysfunction in which your body is not recognizing the physical damage that is occurring. Also, studies have shown that even adding the proper amount of salt to tap water (homemade saline) still risks causing eye infections due to the lack of sterility. It is advised that, unless there is an eyewash emergency, you only use medically-approved eye wash/drops.

My mom's cousin lost his eye because he got shower water trapped under his contact and it started an infection.
68
u/Consistent-Roof-5039 Jul 21 '24
Wow. And now I know I will never wear contacts.
72
u/OakNogg Jul 21 '24
I think about that story every time to motivate me when I'm feeling lazy to take my contacts out even if I'm just to put them back in again right after the shower lol
24
u/Consistent-Roof-5039 Jul 21 '24
I bet. I'm just getting to the age where I will need glasses or contacts soon and your little story just made that decision for me. I had no idea you shouldn't wear contacts in the shower.
23
Jul 21 '24
When I started wearing contacts the optician told me not to wear contacts in the shower. When I immediately agreed that I wouldn't do it, she gave me a stern five minute lecture anyway on how dangerous it is and how I could go blind.
I put off getting them for ages and honestly have found them really helpful, wear a mix of glasses and contacts now.
11
u/bungmunchio Jul 21 '24
I never knew and I've been wearing em for like 15 years 😬 my vision is pretty bad so sometimes I swap from glasses to contacts specifically so I can see in the shower lol
6
u/Amoretti_ Jul 21 '24
Yeah, I was never told not to wear mine in the shower either. I'm gonna keep doing it. I can't stand water on my face, so I almost never get water in my eyes anyway.
I'm sure someone will want to ask: yes, I still wash my face. I use a silicone scrubber and/or washcloth to get my face wet and to wash it off. I just really can't stand splashing water on my face or letting it run on my face.
4
u/Consistent-Roof-5039 Jul 21 '24
Oh no. What are you going to do now?
14
u/bungmunchio Jul 21 '24
probably keep doing it tbh
17
u/Tasty_Candy3715 Jul 21 '24
Yeah don’t do this, it can cost you your eye. Your eyes are precious, it’s not worth it.
7
u/Waveofspring Jul 22 '24
As someone who doesn’t have vision problems, the idea of contact lenses terrify me.
I could never. I would wear glasses for the rest of my life
4
u/suddenspiderarmy Jul 22 '24
Its better than the old school ones which were glass

1
Jul 29 '24
Yeah but how are you gonna see anything when swimming. That's one of the rare circumstances where I moss having contacts.
1
u/Waveofspring Jul 30 '24
I don’t know. Personally if my vision was okayish without lenses I’d just not use any, but if you have reaaaally bad vision then I guess you kinda need contacts huh? Idk.
1
Jul 30 '24
I don't know, I go without but don't see anything lol like I always hope nobody is greeting me as I can't disstingish people. But I do find the swimming pool
3
u/Ok-Concern8628 Jul 25 '24
He really shouldn’t have been wearing contacts in the shower or anywhere around water. You’re supposed to thoroughly dry hands after washing them before inserting contacts, and wait until your face has already been washed and dried before putting them in to avoid this kind of situation. Contacts are meant to remain clean and saline to avoid bacteria and water is the most important life source and therefore is a breeding ground for bacteria. The fact that people risk their eyes getting in the shower when they’re specifically told not to get water in contacts when they receive them honestly baffles me. Clearly, I feel strongly about this lol. That being said: contacts are not dangerous until you don’t follow the rules.

1
u/sexy_legs88 Jul 22 '24
That's more a problem with him not taking out his contacts when he gets water in them.
3
u/Tasty_Candy3715 Jul 21 '24
Yeah the advice is never to have contacts in when ahowering. Acanthamoeba.

Well said. Would the fact that it is falling onto their eyeballs at a high speed make the damage worse?

u/joelene1892 Jul 21 '24
OP does say that they turn the temperature down to cool for it, so that one is not a worry.
17
u/WasteNet2532 Jul 21 '24
Originally thought that he meant like letting the water run over your eyelids(kinda relaxing) but WTF???
4
u/pants207 Jul 22 '24
i suddenly feel validated for all the times i refused to rinse my eyes with tap water as a kid when they were itchy from allergies and my mom insisted they just needed a good rinse.
2
u/neongloom Jul 23 '24
I've always struggled to even keep my eyes open in any kind of water 🤷 The main post is absolutely baffling to me, because my brain would just be like "nope!" no matter how hard I tried to open my eyes (not that I would even want to do this).

u/RedPaxultek Jul 21 '24

u/codeine_turtle Jul 21 '24
They will hate on you for this but as long as you know the risk involved then wash away brother.
3
u/genderboy_ Jul 25 '24
...I just found out why shower water getting in my eyes burns even if shampoo didn't get in them. Good to know!
2
u/Thomassaurus Jul 23 '24
Ok, but what about people who swim often? I've never been warned that it's dangerous to open my eyes under water
0
u/Dazzling-One-9634 Aug 10 '24
Those who swim in the water with their eyes open without goggles are not more dangerous. River water, sea water and swimming pool water are 100 times dirtier than tap water, right?
3
u/KumaraDosha Aug 10 '24
They are though. So thanks for making my point. 🤷♀️
1
u/Dazzling-One-9634 Aug 11 '24
No offense. In the past. Some people make a living by fishing.Sometimes they need to dive to fish, which must be with their eyes open.
I believe that there are not a few such people, so they should belong to high-risk eye diseases, but what is the reality?
1
u/KumaraDosha Aug 11 '24
These hypotheticals are cool and all, but it’s literally a fact. Yes, you risk eye disease opening your eyes especially in untreated water. Yes, people who swim with their eyes open underwater are at higher risk for eye infection. There are also people who risk bear attacks when hunting, and there’s a higher risk of getting mauled by a bear if you go out into the forest. 🤷♀️ Also have you forgotten the concept of goggles?
1
u/Dazzling-One-9634 Aug 11 '24
Thank you for your serious reply. To be honest, this is my first comment on this software, and you are the first person to reply to me.Thank you for been so nice.🥺
I found the fact that I'm a little off topic, my bad. The original topic was that washing his eyes with tap water would make his eyes hurt. I think the pain may come from the high water pressure of tap water. The osmotic pressure causes less pain than the former. If you put tap water in the basin and put your face in it, it won't hurt so much. I'm sorry that my speech is too Can't find the point , like ChatGPT.😂

So rinsinf with soap is even worse? How to clean the gunk from the eyes then? Eyedrops are not cleaning that.
9
u/KumaraDosha Jul 22 '24
… Bro, eyes clean themselves. You don’t… You don’t wash eyes, bro. We’re talking eyeballs, not eyelids.
Caveat to my above post, eyedrops that don’t explicitly say they are non-habit-forming should not be regularly used either, since they cause the eyes to produce less of its own moisture/lubrication and actually worsens dry-eye. There are some eyedrops made to be used daily that have medication to reduce eye allergies that say they are non-habit-forming, but otherwise, guys…just don’t regularly put liquids into your eyes? It’s not hard.
-5
Jul 22 '24
Isnt it obvious I am not talking about literally pouring soap in to the eyes? How the hell did you make that assumption? This is your first time learning this? Is it necessary to be a condescending douche because you have this superficial knowledge of a much more complex subject?
And the reason to use eyedrops is the gradual degradation of the vitreous humour in the eyes and decrease in concentration of hyaluronic acid. That is why we need the eyedrops to try to make up for that loss over time. I wasn't talking about "eye whiteners" or whatever that nonsense is, but you had to assume that to be more of an ass.
Nevermind, douchebags catch some fragment of gossipy anecdotes on reddit and think they are experts now.
7
u/KumaraDosha Jul 22 '24
User makes post about spraying water directly onto open eyeballs.
I respond with why that’s bad.
You respond with “Then how do you clean them???”
I tell you it is not necessary to clean your eyeballs. Because that is the subject we’ve all been talking about.
You shit around in hysterical circles arrogantly wondering why everyone thought you were talking about the subject of this post/thread/discussion that you joined. You also squeal about “eye whiteners” which precisely Zero people have previously brought up.
Also find me any medical source that claims overuse of eye drops doesn't risk eliminating the lacrimal fluid your eye naturally produces. Here are some of mine!

I never understand the people who use this phrase. It's like saying we survived billions of years without toothpaste, or toilet paper, or showers. Sure, humans survived, but we've evolved to the point where those things have become necessities.

Oh dear… This human has never heard of diseases in water. Do you know what bacteria are? Humans are around these all the time. Do you know how many die of things around them? Guess what infections are. Hint: They’re not artificial contaminants. Also eye drops are composed of the natural ingredients in tears, not “sTrAnGe ChEmIcAlS”. I hope you feel embarrassed.

Girl. The GI tract and skin are specifically designed with much higher resistance to infection, bro; pleeeeaaase take a single biology class. I am cringing out of my natural barrier to infection (skin).

Ears - skin
Fingernails - skin
Mouth - GI tract
Genitals - douching is harmful; thanks for proving my point. Also, the vagina is not a perpetually open hole; bathing does not normally allow water to enter the vagina.
People in the first world get eye infections from water. This is a fact. You arguing it makes you delusional.
I’m not a student, and the genius thing sounds like satire, so I’m getting the feeling you’re a troll, nice.
1
u/m00setart Jul 22 '24
Ears - skin
If we're talking about the outer ear canal, then water getting in can absolutely cause an infection. It's called "swimmer's ear" and hurts like a bitch.

I agree there's probably no need to use an eye wash (artificial or otherwise) unless there's a recognised reason, but this reasoning is silly - water is also a chemical, after all, and "natural" does not always mean "good". Cyanide, amatoxin, and Botulinum toxin are all naturally occurring, and our bodies aren't designed to deal with them. Same for diseases like cholera, malaria, typhoid and so on. Smallpox was also natural until we eradicated it with one of those awful chemical agents no other creature has that our bodies weren't even designed for.

PSA: do not put unsterilized liquids in your eyes. Can't believe we really need a PSA for this. Your eyes are delicate and require a specific ph for optimal health. Also, you might get an eye-eating or brain-eating amoeba from putting foreign unsterilized liquids in your eye.
edit: autocorrect was incorrect
1
u/Thomassaurus Jul 23 '24
People swim with their eyes open, how is this different?
2
u/No-Suggestion-9433 Jul 24 '24
Lakes have those amoebae too. People usually swim with their eyes open in chlorine pools which are safe
1
u/Uxium-the-Nocturnal Jul 23 '24
This applies to freshwater or untreated water. Which sometimes can affect the water you get in your shower or sink. It depends on where your water is sourced from too. But yeah, a chlorinated pool is most likely fine.
63
u/CalmLotus Jul 21 '24
Upvote because I will never do an eye rinse in the shower.
That being said- it can't be worse than opening your eyes in warm melted butter
40
u/Grizzly_bear12343 Jul 21 '24
Is there an interesting story behind that last part? 👀
40
u/CalmLotus Jul 21 '24
In India, Ayurvedic treatment is popular and backed by hospitals. A couple of years ago, my family took us to do Netra-Tarpana, a ghee eye bath, to enchance eye health. It's supposed to also hydrate the eyes.
The ghee (clarified butter) is heated up, then cooled to just room temperature. You lay down, and the assistants put a barrier around your eyes. Then they pour the ghee onto your closed eyes. You open your eyes into it, making sure to look all around to coat your eye in it. You're also asked to keep your eyes open in it and not immediately close.
Thinking back, it definitely stung less than trying to open in like a pool, but more than if it was fresh water/eye rinse. The eyes definitely felt smoother or more hydrated afterward. (But we had to do it every couple of days for a month straight so it became a dread).
6
u/Martofunes Jul 21 '24
if it's heated up, then for sure, there's nothing living on it, since it reaches temperature above water's 100°C. But well... India

Do you hold your eyelids up with your fingers? I don't understand how you get past the reflex of closing your eyes when anything touches them.
Also, two river rocks...
1
u/RedPaxultek Jul 21 '24
No, I just keep them open. I don’t think I have that reflex?
11
u/Consistent-Roof-5039 Jul 21 '24
That's definitely not normal. I have a hard time even putting a single eye drop in my eye without closing my eyes.
3
u/Turakamu Jul 21 '24
I got good at that from contacts but the hell if I can keep my mouth closed
3
u/Consistent-Roof-5039 Jul 21 '24
Are you saying you make "mascara mouth" when putting in your contacts lol
3
-4
u/RedPaxultek Jul 21 '24
I feel like that’s not true because many people use eye drops or put in contacts all the time.
13
u/Consistent-Roof-5039 Jul 21 '24
But a lot of them have to physically hold their eyelid open to do it because the reflex to close your eye is so strong.

u/Hugs-missed Jul 21 '24

5
u/FearLeadsToAnger Jul 21 '24
Horrifically dangerous and could lead to excruciating permanent blindness, not even fucking around. One of my best friends is an optician and when she was going through uni she sent me a ton of images of various eye illnesses. One was a bacteria infection from tap water, I refuse to find it, I dont want to see it again, you don't either.

I usually rinse my eyes every day when washing my face, not in the shower tho. I think the pressure is too much
4
u/RedPaxultek Jul 21 '24
I don’t stare directly into the falling water because of the pressure, I let it run down my forehead a bit, so I suppose it’s more of a flush.

I do the same thing in the morning. I wash my face with cold water and rinse my eyes with the cold water as well. It feels good and helps with the puffiness.

I'm just discovering that people wash their eyeballs
I don't know but it sounds alright!
6
u/HipnoAmadeus Jul 21 '24
afaik not common and you most likely shouldn't because it has to be very clean water or specific products
5
u/CoconutxKitten Jul 22 '24
It’s generally not recommended to rinse things that have their own flushing system
2
u/neongloom Jul 23 '24
I don't understand what could even need "washing" it's not like they're full of dirt 👀
5
u/berrykiss96 Jul 21 '24
You should consider getting a migraine mask and keeping it in the fridge or freezer and pop that over your eyelids in the morning instead for both cool sensation and anti-puff
Since it’s not going in your eyes you don’t have the sterility concerns of washing them and migraine masks actually cover the eye area vs other styles of cooling mask
1
u/No-Suggestion-9433 Jul 24 '24

Maybe just use optrex eye wash if you must? I used it twice to wash my eye just in case there was something in it, and yeah it did feel good. Don’t do it in the shower though!!
3
u/nahthank Jul 22 '24
I will attempt to stop, as sad as that is. Thank you, everyone!
I'd love for someone to come tell me I'm wrong so I know to stop doing this as well, but surely closing your eyes would let you run water over the front of your face at least? It won't give you the "eyes are river stones" feeling (??????) but it still feels really nice.
3
u/RedPaxultek Jul 22 '24
Yes, that’s what I was thinking! But I didn’t think it enough to make another edit. I have decided I’ll switch to letting it run over my closed eyes and maybe doing a gentle little eye massage or something.

I love having cooler water--not cold, but, the colder the better--from the showerhead run over my closed eyes. It's such a nice sensation for some reason. Nothing really stands out about a shower except for feeling a cleanser product oxidize to which it also feels cool on the face while you're actively in a warm shower. I get you. Downvoted cordially.

u/RedPaxultek Jul 22 '24

Yeah … that can rupture your ear drum, cause an infection from the non-sterilized water, or induce vertigo. I mean same as OP, as long as you know the risks go for it but I wouldn’t.
