Plot progression?

I've just finished season 1. I really like the show so far but its plot differs from other similar TV shows,. Not sure how to explain it. For example, in The Wire every episode was a part of a bigger plot, in the Shield in latest seasons there was a main big plot too about the whole crew becoming more and more corrupt. In Southland, it mostly seems like there is no plot. Sure some things reoccur in different episodes and there is some progression. but MOSTLY I feel like every episode is a standalone story. Basically, my question is: will it change in later seasons or all of them are going to be like season 1? Will there be a main big plot story or something like that? Thanks

Sounds like you’re talking about the story arc. Yes, they get more developed and most characters have heir own stories that develop through the end of the series. I really enjoy The Wire but Southland is still my favorite police drama by far. Hang in there.

Edited to say, I think some of what you’re experiencing may just have to do with how they portray normal routine police work. Multiple unrelated calls every shift, multiple cases for detectives to work and try to clear, etc.

Catching on late(watching on HBO max) and no central plot is just as enjoyable. It’s the lives of several cops working different jobs within the department - following their personal arcs. Not that different than Law and Order (without the D.A.).
