I got my first guiding key, and I see that the main ability to unlock is just "special charge time - 1", it is not very helpful I think. Are there specific units that I need to fully LB first, or should I simply focus on my top tier and most used units like Roger, Luffi/Sanji?

Doffy 2 Garp Challenge is pretty hard without Vivibecca LB+ and all you get with that is -1 CD. It depends on the situation but it can matter a lot. Mostly what you are looking for is LBing units you use, that gain useful abilities, or reduced cooldown.

What type of key? Gold, silver, or blue? That would factor in which units are good for it.

Gold key from Kaido BM event. I have a bunch of top tier units: roger, luffy/sanji, snakeman, shank crew, vivi rebecca, v3 akainu, sabo koala, haloween units, oden etc

I’d backup what nightmare said, especially whoever you use a lot and special cooldown is nice. In case you don’t know, lb+ing legends is extremely expensive on lb materials to do it all the way, it’s like 300 small and 150 medium of every color, so if that’s not something you can afford then maybe wait a bit for it as most of the time it’s not a requirement.
