I would like to add that in most situations the first (or first few even) characters in the chain won't do too much damage either way. Even if you don't apply a chain lock or a chain boost, the first character you attack with will anyway be doing 2.5x less damage than the last unit in the chain. That is a huge difference and even if all units receive all the boosts (including having color affinity) the first unit will still not do that much damage in comparison. That is why it doesn't matter if one or 2 units don't get the boost from a captain (or both captains even).
Yes, most of the time you are going to look at units who also have color advantage to make things safer (more damage means you can afford more mistakes). But it doesn't matter if you cannot.
Personally I always the calculator to see if I would have enough damage when I know I am going to be fighting something difficult. If it's like a 5* difficulty I wouldn't bother though. Seems like most people are a bit adverse to using the calculator though. If you are a new player I would recommend you to use it as much as you can, if nothing else, to at least get used to be able to roughly approximate how much damage you do based on boosts.
