The choice of giving the creatures names and not mentioning they're Zoan Devil fruit models is... a choice.

devils don't need devil fruits

If we get a scene where one of the Elders gets thrown into the water only for them to swim out I’m going to shit myself

That's what we all are expecting, really.

3

u/DargoKillmar Pirate Mar 15 '24

I like this a lot.

u/GooglyTocks Slave Mar 15 '24

Because there's a chance they aren't devil fruit eaters, that's why...

u/DeismAccountant Mar 15 '24

The DF are dreams, but these guys are clearly nightmares.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

"When I grow up I want to be a nightmarish skeleton horse centaur" a random 8 year old

2

u/Pinguinmeister Mar 16 '24

Or an 9 year old, playing too much Dark Souls and having nightmares. The same ones I had as a kid when I watched Toy Story right before going to sleep.

6

u/Worthyness Mar 15 '24

They're actual devils that trapped their brethren in devil's fruits to seal them away. The will of the fruits seek out humans to become hosts so that they may rebel against their false imprisonment

164

u/DargoKillmar Pirate Mar 15 '24

Yeah that's what I was implying.

u/Outrageous-Tailor-74 Mar 15 '24

I had a discussion with a friend, that maybe these Devilfruits are somehow different. As Oda already teased/wrote in the manga about the Nika fruit, that it has its own will. Maybe these devil fruits all have an own will and a complete charakter. They just use the human as a vessel.

Nika fruit, that it has its own will

No, as stated in chapter 1044, ALL zoans, without exception, have a will of their own. Luffy's fruit isn't special.

I've been hoping that'd be what Imu is. Circumventing the immortality procedure by continuously sacrificing vessels to the entity within the fruit. Most Celestial Dragons would probably want to sit on the empty throne if asked so, hey, why not eat this meal to celebrate your ascension?

u/hey_mattey Mar 15 '24

Devil Fruit Shitters!

10

u/OilOk4941 Mar 15 '24

they're probably just devils no fruit needed. like nika was probably not a fruit until he died

4

u/Loaf235 Mar 15 '24

Could lead to the imu taming monsters theory.

1

u/Big_Champion9396 Mar 17 '24

Lol Imu is Red from Pokemon but evil.

1

u/YaIe Mar 15 '24

There is also an option that they have more than one. We do not know if that is unique to Blackbeard, or if there is just a secret to it

  • No Devil Fruit names (yet)
  • Summoning via magic circles

Those who think that the 'Gorosei are actual demons' get to hold on to that notion for a little while longer at least.

19

u/DargoKillmar Pirate Mar 15 '24

Yet, yeah. But commonly, everytime a Zoan form is introduced and named, they follow the same convention: a text box with the name of the fruit, the classification of the Zoan, and the model. This time, they jumped straight to the model. Which is at the very least, odd.

12

u/Jonny_the_Rocket Mar 15 '24

Maybe it's like a Kaido situation where we expected a Dragon-Dragon fruit but got the Fish-Fish Fruit instead.

Oda might be keeping the names of the devil fruits a secret to avoid revealing something that could have major implications on the world of One Piece.

4

u/DargoKillmar Pirate Mar 15 '24

Yeah maybe but there seems to be something about them, with them having the same eyes and all. Like, in principle, it shouldn't give more trouble than naming it Ox Ox Fruit Model: Demon Ox. The fact that he didn't makes me suspicious.

12

u/Jonny_the_Rocket Mar 15 '24

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but I decided to double-check the chapter where the Gorosei made their debut (chapter 233). Interestingly, I spotted what seemed to be magic circles on the walls. It caught my attention, and I thought it was worth mentioning.

u/DargoKillmar Pirate Mar 15 '24

That's a good catch!

8

u/aLittleBitFriendlier Mar 15 '24

Also a character drew specific attention to Saturn's eyes the chapter before last, and all the gorosei have the same.

2

u/Jonny_the_Rocket Mar 15 '24

The Gorosei sure have a lot going on, theory crafters will have a blast with this.

3

u/randbobaccount Mar 15 '24

Could all be part of imu’s powers. Able to summon yokai.

4

u/GenGaara25 Void Month Survivor Mar 15 '24

Yeah that's got to be intentional. Absolutely waiting for then to officially say the Elders aren't human.

3

u/Emptypiro Mar 15 '24

I'm not budging on the devil fruit thing until it's confirmed. I hear this every time a new zoan appears. Like how many human human fruits do yall think there are?

I’m with you there. When we learned of Kaidō’s powers, it was “no, he’s a real dragon who ate the oni fruit!” as if we had precedent for such a species (besides potentially the dragon from Monsters, but that could be completely different for all we know). When we saw Onimaru transform from his ōnyūdō form, it was “no, he’s just a fox with natural shapeshifting powers!” as if we had any precedent for…. species of animals that possess inherent magic outside of the series’ power system?

I’m not saying Oda can’t break precedent, but for an author who can prove so unpredictable, he rarely actually does stray beyond the bounds he sets up — and when he does (say, as he started to introduce haki), he’s already setting up another system to account for it. Unlike “yeah they’re actually just literal demons,” which isn’t a system he’s ever ostensibly set up for, unless he’s damn great at hiding it. Some people are taking the existence of Devil Fruits themselves to be precedent for demons, but I can’t say I took those quite so literally.

These guys’ powers were definitely introduced atypically, but to me, the way their intros were formatted is still pretty damn tenuous evidence to claim that their existence breaks the established power system and worldbuilding.

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Mar 15 '24

This is a chapter where everyone should absolutely read the official translation. I won’t be surprised at all if the translations there vary and have different implications.

That said, I’ve thought for a while that, like sanji said, there guys are literal demons/monsters and not necessarily fruit eaters.

4

u/Ark_ita Mar 15 '24

Yeah, likely the are either sentient "fruits" or fruits transformations come from creatures like them

15

u/DargoKillmar Pirate Mar 15 '24

I was thinking maybe they just pre-date Devil Fruits, but are similar? I always assumed Joyboy ate the Gomu Gomu No Mi, but what if Joyboy (or Joyboy's will) IS the Gomu Gomu No Mi? I'm getting ahead of myself tho.

10

u/Ark_ita Mar 15 '24

Nika the God dies, his will becomes the fruit, joyboy was a previous fruit user.

If a gorosei (maybe they ARE myth creatures) dies, a fruit is created.

If a fruit user dies the will inside the fruit they ate is free again and goes somewhere to become a fruit again.

Blackbeard can catch the fruit will before it disappears from the dead user and make immediately a fruit.
