I think it's much cooler that luffy can be a goof and do something like this when he needs to.

Yeah I feel like he's finally settling in as an emperor. This seems like the kinda thing Kaido could do. This is kinda the first time he feels on the level of Kaido, Big Mom, Shanks, Blackbeard, and Whitebeard.

I was just thinking, this feels like something Whitebeard would do. Luffy saying "You know there's no way I'm letting you escape, right?" feels like right after Akainu donutted Ace and then Whitebeard was right behind him.

Like, oh yeah, im gunna fuck you up now.
