Also that look he gave when he first grabbed the two of them. People were complaining that luffy wasn’t serious enough when he was in G5. Should put those complaints rest

My thoughts exactly. One of the first time we have seen him not smiling, scowling even. Shits getting real quick.

His smile was even more terrifying for me, real psycho vibes, I would NOT want to be on the receiving end of that smile lol

This is what I imagined G5 was always going to develop into, like a lot of emperrors have themes, luffy s is going to be basically dark comedy. Thats the terrifying part of it.

It makes sense; he's basically a rubber hose character now, and the rubber hose era wasn't afraid to be dark or unsettling.

Luffy gave some intimidating Cuphead boss vibes in that panel.

That's was I said, I was like "wow his smile makes him seem like an absolute psychopath who you don't wanna be across from"

I mean he wasn't smiling when he hit Kaido with his last attack. Never understood why people glossed over that when talking about this.

So true! G5 haters want to further their agenda, I suppose.

"Menacing + Manic" is usually a mood reserved for villains or heroes who are snapping/having a moment.

It'll be interesting to see it from the other side.

Well he's not really "manic". He is "free". He does not care about how he looks or how he's percieved. He's doing exactly what he wants to do.

I feel like we're seeing him grow more comfortable with using G5. Against Kaido especially, but earlier in Egghead too he seemed like he was almost "possessed" by Nika. All of the laughing, bouncing around, unserious nature. But now, in the midst of everything going to shit, he's using it to seem more intimidating than even a Gorosei member.

Yup and he clearly showed care for Vegapunk. G5 can clearly be written in a serious way and this chapter proves it.

That was always a ridiculous complaint. We saw Luffy get serious in G5 against Kaido. He wasn't laughing during the final struggle. He knew exactly what the stakes were, and his response ("a world where my friends get to eat whenever they want") was pure Luffy.

He was smiling during the final clash tho. Kinda.

Him laughing while vegapunk was dying was the issue. I’m glad we’re seeing him being serious sometimes though. Makes it a little better

Well its obvious, 5 is more than 4, so therefore, gear 5th breaks the 4th wall.

Since gear 5 breaks the 4th wall, Luffy is aware of plot armor and Oda's tendency to avoid killing characters off, so he laughs until he relizes Oda is gonna kill Vegapunk.

HAHAHA

I see it more as tapping into so much power that it's impossible for you to actually be intimated. It's like he's absolutely confident in his ability to win. Nothings a threat to him

I felt like he was laughing at Kizaru's "letter of apology" stuff, but that might be me

To be fair, this is the first time Oda drew him with a facial expression appropriate for the mood.

Cartoonishly protruding telescope eyes is appropriate as being surprised when a thunder bagua is about to flatten his head, not when he sees Vegapunk with a fist-sized hole in his chest bleeding and dying on the floor

At least this chapter made it clear that smiling/laughing expression is the base form of his face in G5, not that he really finds everything "funny"

To be honest, I was not complaining about Luffy's non-serious attitude in G5. I thought that was one of the drawbacks of the fruit. That it changed ones personality when using the Awakening and I thought that was rad as hell.

It's not really a complaint as much as it is an observation. So far it seems like G5 results in Luffy losing himself and his sense of urgency. He laughed when he usually wouldn't. Which alligns with zoans having a will of their own. Users of carnivorous fruits get more ferocious and Luffy in his awakened state focuses on joy and fun. Maybe he finds a way to control that part of it or maybe it will be a reason to use lower gears in the future.
