1000-chapter build up for Elbaf must not disappoint

The other two islands that were heavily built up were fishmen island and wano and they weren’t exactly 💣s

After having read the manga (obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be commenting here) I'm currently watching the anime for the first time. I'm at Fishman Island right now and I gotta say, it's probably the most interesting arc from the themes it addresses in the entire series. There's so much going on with lots of characters who are positioned towards the central conflict in various ways and Oda manages to have everyone act according to those principles at all times.

It's possibly the most intricate arc in the entire series and the conclusion is perfect and cements Hody as one of the most interesting villains, specifically because he is weak and because he has no actual reason for his hatred of humans.

Add to that the importance that fishman island has for the lore (first joyboy mention, the prohecy of luffy destroying the island which will likely happen when he destroys the red line etc.) as well as the joy of seeing every strawhat in action after the timeskip.

I wasn't that into it when I first read the manga but after a second watch I'd easily rank it in my top 10, if not top 5

Yeah from that perspective its true especially on the theme of the arc. That was its strong point but also its weak as the battles especially were plot driven.

Yeah, that's true. So it definitely depends on what you are looking for the most

Well if I look at it now I am in favour of the story. At that point I was so eager to see the true power of the crew after the timeskip and it felt weird having both punk hazard and fishman island to be plot driven.

I get your point though!

certainly set the stage for Dressrosa, though! Too bad the animation is supposed to be pretty weak for that arc... when I read it it seemed like one of the flashiest One Piece arcs and it's a bit sad to hear that it has such a bad rep in the anime
