Man I love seeing the different reactions to Luffy's first bounty.

Ace - showing off to Jinbe excitedly

Sabo - unfazed because he has amnesia at this point

Dragon - "oh shit I better get going to Loguetown if I want my boy to make it out of there"

He was going there before knowing that Smoker was in charge, so he was just going to see his son before he starts the journey on the Grand Line.

haha you right, I just think it's funny to imagine Dragon rushing off to Loguetown in concern

"uuhhh no particular reason. Just taking a stroll and taking in the sights. I really want to see that execution stand too!"

Dragon: Oh shit I haven't taught him haki or anything cause I'm a terrible father, Smoker gonna smoke him

I mean if you're trying to abolish world wide slavery you can be excused for being an absent dad. Now those who truly are shitty dads are Judge and Kaido

I think it's safe to assume that if it wasn't specifically Smoker, it would be another very powerful (for East Blue standards) person. Loguetown is just that important of a location. Dragon would of course know that, so he wanted to go there to make sure Luffy was safe.

I mean he immediately asked who’s in charge after saying he’s going meaning it was on his mind. He could definitely be going because he’s worried too

22

u/BeyondTomorrow Dec 21 '23

Agreed. Given that he was part of Marines, I'm sure he was aware of Smoker and his potential.

Dragon if Aokiji was in charge instead: “damn , I better stay home instead or I’m finished”

Considering how dragon has put Akainu in an inferiority complex. I don't think Aokiji would wanna mess with him.

But why? Did he want to meet up but bailed?

Dragon often went to see Luffy without meeting him.

It's the same there, just that Smoker forced him to get involved.

I hope we get pay off for that. Some sort of conclusion cause honestly this one hits home.

I want explanations on why he doesn't see him. I don't think the Kuma thing is enough

My dude, ur blind. He doesn't meet him because he doesn't want Luffy associated with him (him being the most wanted man on the planet), he doesn't want Luffy hunted because of him and used against him and the Revolution.

Associating with Luffy kills both his son and his Revolution. Literally the two things he cares about most in the world.

12

u/ironicfuture Dec 21 '23

Yeah, we saw in this flashback what having a close personal connection as a Revolutionary will do to you. Imagine if the WG captured Luffy as a kid, or sent an admiral to capture him during East blue if they knew he was Dragons son. They could end the whole revolution quite easy.

Makes sense for before the timeskip, but after Marineford the whole world knows Luffy is Dragon's son. He doesn't seem to care even then. I guess it's because he knows Luffy is in good hands.

15

u/ironicfuture Dec 21 '23

By that time Luffy had crushed two Shichibukais, raided Enies Loby, escaped from Impel Down with a bunch of dangerous prisoners, invaded Marineford AND punched a god damn celestial dragon. By that time Luffy had already shown he could take care of himself and cause quite the ruckus without being associated with Dragon.

u/antari--- Dec 22 '23

He doesn't seem to care even then.

Like, this is literally what he is going for. Look like he doesn't care, like it's just some jizz he squirted ages ago and never thought of again. That. is. the. point.

Exactly.

Sounds like an absentee father who can't come to terms with facing the fact that he abandoned him.

A bit cowardly tbh

3

u/Lordsokka Dec 23 '23

Yeah sure the man trying to save the ENTIRE world from tyranny, oppression, slavery and genocidal war games is a coward! /s

Dragon is the furthest thing away from a coward, he’s forsaking his own personal life to try and save EVERYONE!

Before the time skip he didn’t interact with Luffy because he didn’t want people to know their connection and post time skip they simply haven’t been able to meet. Luffy is in the New World and Dragon is not, they will meet eventually.

Yes but as ex-navy he knows there is someone decent form the navy at every last island before the grand line. He just asked to confirm but he was going regardless.

5

u/nau5 Dec 21 '23

Jinbe was already crushing on Luffy.

13

u/mtg_liebestod Dec 21 '23

I like that it's a casually-dropped important plot detail, it explains why Dragon was at Loguetown which has been an open plot question for... over 20 years?

3

u/shinigamidre Dec 21 '23

He was fully aware they luffy didn't know haki yet and that he wouldn't be able to hit smoker. He went to make sure he got to the grand line.
