This chapter has really cemented Saturn as easily in the top 3 hated characters in the story for me. Gonna make his eventual ass kicking so cathartic. I wonder if all the gorosei are going to be as involved in various plot lines as Saturn, or if he's going to be the stand out in terms of characterization

What’s crazy is that Saturn has barely shown any emotion or personality in all of his appearances. His facial expression has never changed, as far as I can tell.

And yet I absolutely despise him. He’s in my Top 5 hated characters (in that the story wants us to hate him). His actions and demands are so monstrous and evil that I NEED to see him get his shit wrecked THIS arc. Not in a year, not in the next arc, not in the final battle. This arc has to end with Saturn getting his comeuppance, preferably with him being straight up dead.

Saturn has a very clear personality I'd say. He's got the extreme pragmatic apathy that he earns by being one of the absolute rulers of the world. He doesn't need to get "intense" or swing his power around because he's completely secure and confident in his iron grip.

A weaker foe would remind the people around him that he's the strongest guy in the room, but he doesn't do that. He reminds them that they're insects to him, though. Actually, I don't think he's even talked about himself in any capacity up until this chapter, where he reminds Vegapunk that he'd catch any hidden backdoors for Kuma. The world revolves around him and nobody in his orbit needs reminding of that fact.

Also, he's never bothered to rage at someone for standing up against him or try to put them in their place. He doesn't need to. They are already in their place. He literally doesn't give a shit that Vegapunk talks back to him now and then - like, you can't imagine one of Big Mom's or Doflamingo's or Crocodile's subordinates talking them like that. They'd kill or humiliate them to prove they're still the boss. Hell Saturn doesn't even really seem to care very much that Kuma was a Revolutionary leader. All of that "minor" rebellion is so far below him that it just doesn't matter to him.

He doesn't need to remind people to be afraid of him.

...Which is why it's going to completely shatter the backbone of the Marines when they all see him get turned into a Looney Tune by Luffy.

His facial expression has never changed, as far as I can tell.

bottom left panel of a page where Dr. Clover being shot he's literally crying in the same pose Sanji did after he beat up Luffy. And we know, that Sanji felt forced to do what he did.

Compared to other bad guys, Gorosei doesn't seem as people who enjoy and abuse power. By OP standarts it means that a character is not free in their actions.

If you really think about it, Saturn made countless concessions to Kuma and Bonney, considering their status. We also don't know how Ginny managed to escape and how Bonney received her fruit, but I definetly saw a war criminal, that kills even his own soldiers with no second thought, letting a little girl stab him and declaring a wish to see how she suppose to escape him now, because to me, he seems to be as cornered as Kizaru and many other "cogs in the machine"

idk how it will turn out by Oda, but for now, I just remember those panels, where Saturn uttered "Nika" watching Luffy in action. I can't remember nor hate, nor fear there.

There has to be a satisfying payback moment, I know it

I think it's unlikely the five of them will receive the same relevance. We won't have 5 individual arcs for them, so some of them are bound to have a smaller presence, especially from how great Kuma's flashback was.

or if he's going to be the stand out in terms of characterization

I'd argue he actually doesn't. Like, yeah, Saturn's a bastard but I'm not especially angry with him. Kuma's life isn't bad JUST because of Saturn. Kuma's enemy is life and society. More than maybe any other character, his life is a product of the disgusting systems the World Government has put in place.

Heck, I was more angry w/ the cipher pol chick for hiding the letters than I was anything Saturn's done so far.

And Saturn is the one creating and enforcing the government systems, at least as they have pertained to Kumas life

Oda really created one of the most hateable characters in all of manga and named him after the Grateful Dead

He can't keep getting away with this
