Great backstory, I didn’t think Oda could match Robin’s in terms of emotional depth yet Oda proves us wrong

u/32SkyDive Dec 21 '23

Does this also kind of confirm Bonney to join the crew?

She truly fullfills everything much more than anyone in a long time: her backstory is incredibly sad, she is searching for Nika and wants to help him save the world, she is strong and she is a child so definitly very unique

u/tomato-dragon Dec 21 '23

This. She has to join. His father idolized Nika and strived to be a hero like him. She inherits Kuma's will. And now Nika is right there on that very island.

u/listinglight778 Dec 21 '23

She should join, but what would her title/position be? Everyone has a skill.

181

u/Ill-Challenge8552 Dec 21 '23

Apprentice.

47

u/RedTulkas Bounty Hunter Dec 21 '23

with her being a child this would make so much sense

55

u/Themanaguy Lurker Dec 21 '23

Cabin girl of the Strawhats, Jewelry Bonney

22

u/littenthehuraira Dec 21 '23

I wish she would stay in child form from now on, but I think she's still going to stay in her adult form (because Oda likes tits and because of merchandise/recognizability reasons).

20

u/hyrulepirate Dec 22 '23

I only wish that too because it'd be fucking weird with Sanji. (But I don't think she will join the SHC. She's most likely to stay with Vegapunk now that she knows he's practically family.)

30

u/kgullj Dec 22 '23

I only wish that too because it'd be fucking weird with Sanji.

To be fair. Sanji has never shown heart eyes towards bonney

Bonney the Nika apprentice

4

u/Phusra Dec 22 '23

Holy shit I lowkey love this even more than Carrot covering the "scout" position.

Bonus if she has to occasionally revert back to her true age and body because I'd LOVE to see the crews interactions with a mentally 20 year old woman occasionally in a 12 year olds body. Particularly Nami and Zoro and Luffy and Chopper. Nami cuz she loves kids, Zoro because his first words would probably be, "hey you're that kid that threw ketchup on me at Sabaody!" Luffy because I want to see how unphased he is and how they compete for food and Chopper because I think he'd start seeing himself as a big brother again like with Carrot and I loved that gag.

5

u/splice664 Dec 21 '23

makes so much sense. She even has a Nika form.

14

u/Leirari2 Dec 21 '23

Whatever Shanks and Buggy were doing.

Food tester.

Or spy...something like that

Or what's the cabinboy title called for kids on ships? That.

3

u/WoorieKod Dec 21 '23

The cabin boy/girl like Shanks/Buggy on Roger's ship

3

u/FrozenBalloon Dec 21 '23

Wouldn’t she just be the kid? Finally having a fun childhood being her original age and not older? I might be wrong but thats how it feels to me

1

u/allubros Dec 21 '23

cabin girl!

u/DoggyER Dec 21 '23

9

u/paullx Dec 21 '23

She HAS to join, lol, Oda is the one who decides

About Yamato I did not feel similar things other than just because they insisted on joining. About Bonney it's the other way around, we haven't heard she wants to join but I feel the narrative surrounding her situation leads up to that.

But yea, let Oda cooks and decides.

-7

u/K-DramaAccount990 Dec 21 '23

....That is not a reason for her to join.

7

u/Sazjnk Void Month Survivor Dec 21 '23

I mean, while searching for Kuma she decided she wanted to find Nika too, and was taught the sound of the drums of liberation, as soon as she hears that when Luffy goes G5, especially with all the stuff she knows Kuma thought about Luffy as well, she'll have plenty of reason to want to join.

2

u/K-DramaAccount990 Dec 22 '23

Yea, no.

This "this character will join" nonsense is part of every arc. And Bonny is no exception.

I'll see you back when the arc ends and Bonny doesn't join so you can then start this nonsense over again when the next arc starts.

1

u/SternMon Dec 22 '23

After Carrot and Yamato seeming to be shoe-ins for the crew and not joining, I'm not getting my hopes up. It does make a lot of sense for her to join up, though.

78

u/Quetetris Pirate King Buggy Dec 21 '23

Not necessarily, she could just join the Grand Fleet

54

u/Imconfusedithink Dec 21 '23

Where would she join the grand fleet tho? She doesn't fit in under any of the other regiments in the grand fleet. She can't make her own regiment. Her crew is all gone. She's on her own now so it doesn't make sense to join the grand fleet rather than the strawhat crew.

13

u/Funkee_Boy Dec 21 '23

Maybe joins with Vegapunk, Sentomaru, and other Egghead staff once they split off from the Strawhats after escaping

14

u/MesaCityRansom Dec 21 '23

Strawhat Special Science Group

8

u/winddagger7 Dec 21 '23

I think the path that makes the most sense for her is to join the Revolutionaries. I think she'd want to follow in her parents' footsteps.

2

u/Leirari2 Dec 21 '23

Kuma just wished her to become an indomitable pirate. Her backstory is tied to Nika and she wanted to find him. I don’t think she would leave him now that she did.

47

u/2347564 Dec 21 '23

At this point I don't see an additional crew member, and if there will be I doubt it would be anyone from the worst generation. I think we all just really love Bonney right now.

6

u/bigtuck54 Dec 21 '23

I am pretty sure we're going to get one more just bc I think the straw hats will match up with BB 1:1 eventually, and they're currently one short. Bonney makes a lot of sense rn, moreso than Yamato even did

6

u/theREALbombedrumbum Galley-La Company Dec 22 '23

Yeah as much as I wanted Yamato, I could understand Oda reserving that spot for Bonney instead. Could even be a last-minute switch given how abruptly he decided that Yamato will stay behind instead at the end of the void month given how it was used to plan out the final stages of One Piece.

By that I mean I could totally see Oda during his break planning out Egghead and Bonney/Kuma's story more, realizing how strong of a fit it could be (even moreso than Yamato), and changing his mind fast due to how he's already at the end of Wano, hence the rugpull with Yamato staying behind.

1

u/bigtuck54 Dec 22 '23

I’m actually curious now if that’s the case too, it would make a lot of sense. He could do whatever he wants to scale Bonney to compete with the other top straw hats too to even out what Yamato would have brought as a combatant. She has CD blood so it would make sense narratively for her to awaken COC, for example. And that’s not mentioning her fruit, which suddenly has way more potential than probably anyone considered with the distorted futures.

2

u/gnote2minix Cipher Pol Dec 21 '23

well, blackbeard has 10 crew plus kuzan.. so it make sense to have luffy 10 crew + bonney to even the game

16

u/SpaceOdysseus23 Void Month Survivor Dec 21 '23

Bonney and Vivi will probably be going to Laugh Tale together with the crew. Vivi is a no-brainer, she's the most important political figure in the world right now, but Bonney is a child and I think that with everything that happened the SH's may just adopt her. It would echo Roger's journey and how he adopted children too.

10

u/AH_BareGarrett Void Month Survivor Dec 21 '23

I wasn't a fan of Carrot joining at all.

Yamato had the potential and felt like it was heading there, but was pulled out from us.

Bonney however, would make an excellent crewmate. At the least, a member of the Strawhat Fleet.

3

u/NextBerserker Dec 21 '23

I'm all for Bonney joining, but real question:

What's her crew role going to be?

1

u/Alpr101 Dec 21 '23

Taste tester, obviously.

1

u/OkAd3805 Dec 21 '23

cabin girl. she sits out raftel for the strawhats

5

u/malign2 Dec 21 '23

She has her own crew though, doesn't she? Would be kinda strange for her to abandon it. Maybe she'll join the grand fleet like them captains after Doflamingo's arc.

8

u/Imconfusedithink Dec 21 '23

Her crew hasn't been seen since she was captured by akainu. They might have already been killed by blackbeard but if not, it's most likely they were killed by akainu or at least still imprisoned.

4

u/Nome_de_utilizador Dec 21 '23

The only reason for Oda to chicken out of Yamato joining has to be that Bonny would 100% be a nakama. To many links to luffy's own trajectory to be just another pirate ally. Also, she has lacked a "real" crew and one can wonder if BB didn't have anything to do with where the fishermen who left with her are, setting up the final confrontation between him and luffy

2

u/th5virtuos0 Dec 21 '23

If she joins I wish she would use her default appearance so Sanji doesn’t hit on her. It’s creepy as fuck for him to hit on a 12 years old kid, even if she looks like 22

7

u/trainerjbird Dec 21 '23

I could be wrong, but has Sanji even hit on her when she's in her older form?

7

u/RobLuffy123 Dec 21 '23

No lol. It was even mentioned how he's been normal around her

1

u/2th Dec 21 '23

I think she and Vegapunk will probably stay on Elbaf or something.

0

u/beardedheathen Dec 21 '23

She would have been ten when Luffy first started out if my math and understanding of these chapters is right which makes her about 13 now?

0

u/tsuki069 Dec 21 '23

She got a loyal crew. She will most try to save them and join the SH grand fleet

0

u/mtg_liebestod Dec 21 '23

I think if Kuma ends up living through the arc he and her will just retire (or take a long vacation) together.

Of course, that's a big "if"..

0

u/Kuro013 Dec 21 '23

Am I crazy for thinking she should just go back to her home island and take care of it, kinda like Marco did? Her whole voyage was just to find Kuma, if she cant achieve that theres no point.

Unless she and Luffy grow closer and Luffy invites her to join, maybe she just becomes a super Nika fangirls and refuses to leave his side lol.

0

u/kanelel Dec 21 '23

After the fakeout join with Yamato, I don't think there will be a new crew member.

0

u/BlackwingKakashi Dec 21 '23

Not at all. Even remotely. Does it make her a cool character? Sure. Does it CONFIRM her for strawhat? Come on. Seriously?

-1

u/Huffjenk Dec 22 '23

Depends if Kuma’s memory bubble was a one-time use thing (like the pain transfer). If it was more Vegapunk’s invention/he has it stored somehow then it being implanted into the ancient robot and Bonney having her own Iron Giant would be great, and likely added ammo for the Revolutionaries or their own offshoot

-1

u/32SkyDive Dec 22 '23

We see Bonney in the bubble room and it is gone. However Kuma said it wasnt directly his memories but a copy. So Kuma still has them and i think that will be important as he will reject all his lifes pain and give it to Saturn

1

u/piclemaniscool Dec 21 '23

I still don't see any reason why. But she will almost definitely be on the Thousand Sunny as they escape to (presumably) Elbaf. Maybe not a full crew member but I could imagine a similar state as Vivi, long term passenger and BFF.

1

u/sixthaccountnopw Dec 21 '23

It does feel like she'll join, especially considering her upbringing and her wish/dream to fight with Nika, as you said.

So, either she joins or dies (which would be a waste), or she becomes an ally similar to Vivi or Rebecca etc..(which also would be a waste, in my opinion).

78

u/Qui3TKyD Marine Dec 21 '23

All honesty I believe all the back stories from here on out are gonna be deep and hit us all in the feels. Oda is in his bag now and has masterfully left the best characters for last. There will be tears, both of sadness and happiness from us fans in the coming months as this final saga wraps up

2

u/CRtwenty Marine Dec 22 '23

The Joy Boy flashback is going to wreck me, I can already tell.

4

u/keby7 Dec 21 '23

Will Dragon's backstory top Kuma or reveal him as a fraud?

17

u/Qui3TKyD Marine Dec 21 '23

I'm not into comparing back stories, does an injustice to the others. Dragon's just gets me excited because of how much he has to do with the world of OP. He's the world's most dangerous criminal and I can't wait to find out why

1

u/Substantial_Pick6897 Dec 23 '23

Dragon's backstory will probably be less sad for him personally. I mean, Garp probably wouldn't let the wg make him a slave , but give us more information about the WG and the world.
