vegapunk’s silly einstein face with the eternally hanging tongue was never quite my favorite, even though it grew on me. but there’s something about that face covered in tears and that silhouette of him breaking down as he’s pulling the trigger to erase kuma’s personality that’s so poignant and powerful.

That panel is just incredible. It's something that looks beyond his forces, he is pushing it while totally breaking at the same time.

it's crazy how Oda can have that wacky ass face drawn for Vegapunk and still be so impacting and heartfelt, what a guy.

So true... He looks so goofy that it was kind of difficult to imagine him feeling serious emotions about anything really... and then the tears... that is when I broke down

it's something to do with the fact that his emotions are admitting that the thing he loves most, his science, has been twisted into something horrible and yet he's forced to go through with it

Agree, the tongue makes him looks so silly that is hard to imagine him making any sort of serious or emotional face but that panel… man it truly hit like a truck

It's also a contrast to the other 4 genii - unlike Queen, Judge, Gangster Gastino/Caesar, and Buckingham Stussy, Vegapunk still has morals and empathy and humanity, even though he's considered the greatest scientist of them all (at least post-Void Century, he thinks very highly of the Ancient Kingdom's creations!). The other 4 are inferior to him in skill, yet are far less "human" than he is.

It's a lot like Peter Porker in Into the Spider-Verse. When even the goofy comic relief cartoon is being somber, it's a sign that there is no room for levity.
