Discussion / Question Happy Birthday Noomi Rapace Born 28th December 1979.

Noomi Rapace Born: 28 December 1979 (age 45 years) in Hudiksvall, ( I hope I spelled that right),Sweden renowned for her intense and versatile performances. She gained international acclaim for her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish film adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series, starting with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009).

We of course know her for her performance as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw in Prometheus (2012). I personally find her a really compelling actress and it’s a shame we didn’t get to see more of her in Covenant. What are your thoughts on Noomi Rapace and the Character of Dr Shaw?

They really need to stop killing off characters in between movies. The Covenant prologue was so good and I would have taken a fully fleshed out movie devoted to David/Shaw floating in space and eventually landing on Planet 4 versus what we got.

I have to agree, they did a flashback of David unloading the goo vases on their arrival, they could done a flashback to what happened after Shaw woke up, I mean she must have known or suspected David killed the Engineers on the planet . My take is that David killed Shaw soon after he landed that ship. It would have been amazing to see more of what happened.

Seriously man, Shaw is such a great character. With her passion for answers to humanity, and her Ripley-like strength.

This was one of the (several Tbf) reasons why I just couldn’t get on with Covenant. It literally repeated one of the worst mistakes Alien 3 did.

Shaw was a great character, one of the best things about Prometheus. If they couldn’t get the actress back then it should have prompted a plot rethink, not kill her off off-screen and act like it was no big deal (particularly in the obscene way they did).

She's a hottie. Stop killing off the talent, Alien franchise!

Even though they did release a few short clips on YouTube about what happened with her and David, I 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮, really wish we just got a feature length film. There were years of content that they could've used, like showing when exactly David decided to commit genocide, showing his experiments, etc.

Taking the best thing about the previous movie and killing them off screen for the sequel is a thing this franchise needs to desperately stop doing. Have the balls to kill them on screen or don’t at all.

This is why, no matter how good the assembly cut of Alien 3 is, it fails for me right out the gate by ruining off screen the ending to my all time favorite movie.

Prometheus isn’t a great alien film in my opinion, but as a stand alone movie I actually enjoy it quite a lot. To then kill Shaw offscreen starts Covenant off wrong and it’s just downhill from there.

Whist I love the franchise, Alien 3 is the one I rewatch the least. Over the years I grown to appreciate Prometheus more and Covenant is fine imo. I think the films after Cameron’s Aliens, suffered in various degrees from studio interference, lacklustre writing and overall vision. Looking first at the bottom line , rather than lore and really spending time about giving the Xenomorph’s a back story and sticking to it. IMO.

Agreed on Alien 3. I think what happened with the franchise is the classic- it became too big and popular, so more people/the suits stepped in and started pulling levers to make as much money as possible fall out. Very hard to make a good movie under those circumstances, let alone a great one. With that in mind I have always appreciated what Fincher accomplished in 3 even though I rewatch it the least. I cannot join you my friend on your voyage of appreciation for Prometheus/Covenant. I like the feel of Prometheus a lot but like everything else less with each viewing. Wasn’t a fan of covenant at all.

Very well put , no hate from me re Fincher , he’s an incredible Director. Alien 3 is a text book example of studio interference and mismanagement. For me Prometheus was at least trying to explore something new, if they had just stuck to the original plan of 4 films , they may have been able to thread a coherent story , instead they panicked and gave us Covenant. Just my take.. My partner does not like Prometheus at all and lays the blame entirely on Damon Lindelof lol

It’s really good. Definitely worth a watch! Some of the better scifi that’s streaming

u/Sc0ttSumm4rs 15h ago

Totally, I'm just bummed there's no 2nd season

1

u/HexbinAldus WheresBowski 14h ago

Yeah that’s a bummer but I thought it ended well

100%. Very well acted and scripted series. I don’t know if a season two is in the works, but season one was well worth the time. It’s loses a bit of momentum after a banging start, but really finished strong.

gutted it was cancelled, idk how hard it is to get a good sci fi series to last. Raised by Wolves, CANCELLED, meanwhile, we get seemingly unlimited Foundation, like tf

She's a great actress and shaw was one of my favorite characters.

4

u/Champagne_chorizo 20h ago

She’s great , just wish we got to see more of her.

She gave a great performance. The abortion/removal of foreign body scene is so good! It’s traumatic just watching it.

Shaw being killed off was the worst thing about covenant. The rest with David and whatshisface was pretty interesting but no Shaw?! She was the best thing in Prometheus and probably best lead character since Alien 3.

Yeah I thought the character of Dr Shaw was compelling. They missed a trick of not including more of her in Covenant.

I remember seeing conflicting reasons as to why they decided to kill her off. I think originally, the sequel to Prometheus WAS going to have Dr Shaw as the lead character and we were going to follow her and David. It’s unclear if it was Ridley Scott changing his mind or the Studio’s. But there is plenty of supporting evidence online that she was going to fully return for the sequel of Prometheus. It such a shame they did not explore her character more imo.

The only scene from Prometheus I remember as genuinely horrific and not silly (like most of the other scenes) what when Shaw jumped into a robo-surgery pod to have the xenomorph larva ripped from her belly while she is fully conscious. I mean I was in shock... holy crap what a performance.

5

u/Champagne_chorizo 20h ago

Totally!! as female, that scene hit me on a visceral & cellular level. Ridley had the tension and horror dialled up to 11 on that scene, Noomi was incredibly, I can hear in my mind the sound that the Pauling Medpod made, even now…boy , it knocks me sick every time. Easily one of the best scenes in Prometheus for me.

She’s great!!!!!

I was not familiar with her game

2

u/ImpenetrableYeti 20h ago

Man I thought she was going to be huge after this movie

5

u/Champagne_chorizo 17h ago

She seems to have been selective about the work she does , I get what you mean though , I said the same about Connie Nielsen from Gladiator .

u/Spacespider82 18h ago

Not to late to make a movie that explores the journey to planet4 and what sick things he did to her

1

u/Champagne_chorizo 18h ago

If Ridley Scott gets to complete the Prometheus trilogy, they could definitely explore it in flashbacks for sure! Here’s hoping

2

u/Alexcoolps 12h ago

Wasted potential to just kill her off screen and abort what was set up at the end of Prometheus. Seeing the concept art of paradise hurts.

Elisabeth Shaw is a total badass and a narrow second to Ripley for me, to kill her off, off screen, or at all was really disappointing. Daniels is great in covenant, but doesn't get the opportunity to have as impressive moments as Shaw does. That said, I agree they really do need to stop killing off their excellent characters in between films

she so hot

7

u/Champagne_chorizo 23h ago

She’s beautiful for sure

2

u/partsguy850 20h ago

She’s always kinda cute, but pic 3?! Oh lawd!

1

u/RevolutionarySeven7 18h ago

she could've easily become the new Segourney/Ripley! But nope!

u/lordphoeni-X 14h ago

This woman is a dream

Shaw’s off screen death was worse than Hicks and Newt’s combined.

1

u/Champagne_chorizo 6h ago

That’s a hot take! I’m going to politely disagree with you on that one. I saw Alien 3 in the theatre and let me tell you having Hicks and Newt go hit hard. People were silently glancing at each other, we couldn’t believe it.

Noomi is a good actor, but she's no Sigourney Weaver who absolutely carried the Alien franchise. Aside from poor writing, I just didn't think Noomi was the right actress to embody Dr. Elizabeth Shaw. She wasn't charismatic and was kinda just there. So I wasn't too upset when they jettisoned her character in Alien Covenant, though I did like the backstory.

With each new actress trying to play the female lead in the Alien franchise, it's just become apparent how outstanding Sigourney Weaver is compared to them. JMHO
