Brought this up with my partner talking about Gremlins and The Nightmare Before Christmas, trying to think of what other Chrismas movies we could watch. Prometheus might just be that third irreverent wiseman, so to speak.

Die Hard is a great Christmas movie too

I would also argue that as far as quality of film goes, Die Hard is a perfect Christmas movie

I know it’s a meme, but I watch Christmas movies for Christmastime vibes and Die Hard really does have that so I unironically love watching it at Christmas.

The Green Knight both starts and ends on Christmas day, with an entire year's events covered in between.

In Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship leaves Rivendell on the 25th December, does that mean it counts as a Christmas movie too?

I keep telling people Lethal Weapon is a Christmas movie. It literally starts off with Christmas music under the opening credits and ends with Gary Busey shouting “It’s CHRISTMAS” as he shoots up a TV.

u/_b1ack0ut 14d ago
Even that lethal weapon game from way back when had little Christmas tree decals pasted everywhere iirc lol

u/TheMostUnclean 14d ago
I’ve seen people get unreasonably upset when you call Nightmare Before Christmas a Christmas movie instead of a Halloween movie.
My opinion is it can be whatever you want. But personally, I prefer watching it as a Christmas movie. It’s in the title and the whole plot leads up to it.
The other side is that the tone, visual design and original release date mean it’s for Halloween.
But even the director has said it can be whatever you want.

I always did love this scene in Prometheus. How Vickers was like “You got to be kidding me?” The funny thing is if I were in her shoes. I’d be same too. You’re going in deep space to search for extraterrestrial beings that supposedly engineered humanity. Why bother celebrating a holiday about divination? (Not to mention the lack of love from her own father) But I also understand Janek’s side too. It’s the humanitarian side of us holding hope. Yeah this was a brilliant scene.

And where the fuck did he get a joint!? Is that astro-smuggling!?
LOL.
I saw this scene and the best part is the look of frustration and confusion as she isnt sure what she should be pissed about here. (or if she has a good reason even?)

I laughed about this with a friend the last time we watched it. The issue is that, unlike Die Hard, it being Christmas is irrelevant to the plot.
I argue Die Hard is a Christmas movie because if it wasn’t Christmas Eve, the building wouldn’t have been empty, the party wouldn’t have been happening, the security wouldn’t have been as lacking, John wouldn’t have travelled from New York to Los Angeles, and in general the whole movie couldn’t have happened. Ergo, it’s a Christmas movie because Christmas is vital to the plot.
In Prometheus, is there any part of the plot that wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t Christmas?
Gremlins I think isn’t the Gremlin actually a Christmas present? So again, that movie wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t Christmas?
Edit: Is it possible there’s a cut out there that says the reason they were so stupid and took their helmets off and thought that the goo and the snake thing were harmless is because they were drunk on egg nog? I’d argue that would make it a Christmas movie. 😂

The Engineers decided to wipe out humanity at pretty much the date Jesus was killed. It's relative to the plot to the point of being a little heavy handed!

How come the engineer that survived the crash at the end of the movie didn't just go to one of the other ships on the planet? Surely he knew there was more right?

He wanted to kick the ass of whoever just destroyed his ship.
Unlike a lot of things in the movie, this part seems like a completely expected thing to do.
Also, he was grumpy because those damn humans just woke him from a nice long nap.

One of my favorite moments in the movie. (Along with Charlize’s and Idris’ interactions) wish Idris was in the franchise more 😭

u/coffeefan0221 15d ago
I found it weird, especially when they sleep together (not that we see it)- just kinda, unnecessary.
16
3
u/Anima1212 14d ago
I do agree them sleeping together was unnecessary and kind of out of nowhere. But the way they played off each other before was nice. It’s practically the only bit of humanity and vague warmth we get to see from Vickers. Makes her more realistic. (Vaguely) Some more scenes with that from her would’ve been nice also, with other characters possibly.. but I understand that’s not where the movie’s focus is..
1
u/BigDinoCord_5000 13d ago
How so? Most people like to get laid, even Vickers. After being in cryo sleep for 2 years, I get it.

u/HexbinAldus WheresBowski 15d ago
100%. It was extremely forced. And completely out of the blue. And entirely unnecessary. Practicing my adverbs.

u/Royal-Emergency8740 15d ago
What was the purpose of this scene. Other than to show what quirky guy Idris was.
42
u/Game_Over_Man69 15d ago
It's just a standard "fleshing out the crew" scene and they probably wanted to tie in Christmas with all of the other religious themes in the movie.
10
u/BaneShake 15d ago
I genuinely think it’s a holdover from when they were going to make it more explicit Jesus was an Engineer. It still sort of ties into themes, I suppose.
17
u/BadFont777 15d ago
You should probably just read a summary of movies instead of watching them if this kind of thing bothers you.
8
u/KingMottoMotto 15d ago
It's a film about how utterly hopeless and cold the universe is. The scene is just one of many where the crew members are trying to find a little bit of comfort in an unfamiliar and terrifying situation. It's not pointless, it's human.
Maybe the Avengers would be a bit more up your alley.
-15
u/HexbinAldus WheresBowski 15d ago
Right. The scene adds nothing. It’s so strange and out of place
20
u/Fickle-Economist4724 15d ago
The scene adds enough
It’s a character moment for Janek - he’s the captain and knows what helps crews on long missions, it demonstrates his experience
(You could argue ripley talking to Brett and Parker isn’t necessary, but it adds character)
We the audience now know it’s Christmas time, arbitrary for science fiction, but very very poignant for themes of creation, religion and shaws “immaculate conception” of sorts

In one scene it's christmas. If he was really in the christmas spirit that MF be having green and red all over that ship. Just like Chris Columbus did in both Home Alone movies.

u/mick_justmick 14d ago
Actually, I think it's a religious movie. With Christmas, all the talk of faith, the cross being so prominant, the "where did we come from", the engineer sacrifice. Not to mention the human sacrifices from the ACTUAL prequel to Alien called AVP😆
(Flamesuit activated)

u/Bowendesign 14d ago
I’ll bite. So the backbone to the Engineers hating us is supposedly because we killed Jesus (see; Ridley Scott tells is this in an interview). The birth of Jesus was the culmination of the Engineers plan to create us in their own image. The creation myth in the context of the film is also the birth of our own end, via the black goo. The image of the Xenomorph is even a figure in a cross formation, relating back to Jesus (for some reason). The green rock signifies rebirth, as per Jesus’ resurrection where a rock was moved (big stretch but bear with me). The murals also relate to the mythology of creation and the birth of a new coming, in this case creatures resembling the Xenomorph. It happening at Christmas relates the birth of the creatures back to the Jesus myth, and you could say that the characters have all undertaken a pilgrimage to make offering to the new god. So therefore Christmas is integral to the plot, and therefore Prometheus is a Christmas movie.

It's not in the theatrical cut
Was included as a deleted scene on the Blu-ray
And fan cuts added it back (Prometheus has really good fan cuts).
