I can't get enough of that stupid grin that he makes while playing the accordion, knowing the next thing he's gonna do is clap cheeks

Someone call my name?

u/Tisroero 15d ago

Brought this up with my partner talking about Gremlins and The Nightmare Before Christmas, trying to think of what other Chrismas movies we could watch. Prometheus might just be that third irreverent wiseman, so to speak.

68

u/The_Rolling_Stone 15d ago

Die Hard is a great Christmas movie too

56

u/Jolly-Ad-1161 15d ago

So is John Carpenter's The Thing!

7

u/cBurger4Life 14d ago

Nice! Adding that to my Christmas movie list

1

u/KingOfVSP 13d ago

The Thing is the alien that keeps on giving!

15

u/Comrade_Compadre 14d ago

I would also argue that as far as quality of film goes, Die Hard is a perfect Christmas movie

8

u/crippler1212 14d ago

Die Hard is THE greatest Christmas movie!

4

u/cBurger4Life 14d ago

I know it’s a meme, but I watch Christmas movies for Christmastime vibes and Die Hard really does have that so I unironically love watching it at Christmas.

10

u/WrestlingCheese 15d ago

The Green Knight both starts and ends on Christmas day, with an entire year's events covered in between.

2

u/OwnCoffee614 14d ago

Oooo nice. I love that movie

7

u/SystemLordMoot 14d ago

In Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship leaves Rivendell on the 25th December, does that mean it counts as a Christmas movie too?

16

u/BLF402 15d ago

Leathal weapon Batman returns Iron man 3 Eyes wide shut

9

u/NocturnalPermission 14d ago

I keep telling people Lethal Weapon is a Christmas movie. It literally starts off with Christmas music under the opening credits and ends with Gary Busey shouting “It’s CHRISTMAS” as he shoots up a TV.

5

u/_b1ack0ut 14d ago

Even that lethal weapon game from way back when had little Christmas tree decals pasted everywhere iirc lol

6

u/TheMostUnclean 14d ago

I’ve seen people get unreasonably upset when you call Nightmare Before Christmas a Christmas movie instead of a Halloween movie.

My opinion is it can be whatever you want. But personally, I prefer watching it as a Christmas movie. It’s in the title and the whole plot leads up to it.

The other side is that the tone, visual design and original release date mean it’s for Halloween.

But even the director has said it can be whatever you want.

2

u/AddLuke 14d ago

I’ve been telling my wife Gremlins is a Christmas movie and she refuses to believe.

1

u/Equal-Ad-2710 14d ago

Pretty sure that the next Batman movie will be set at Christmas

1

u/OneFish2Fish3 BONUS SITUATION 13d ago

Y’all are sleeping on Brazil

21

u/ccorbydog31 15d ago

He is also smoking a joint ( Blunt). So it’s a stoner movie too.

17

u/Vreas LET'S ROCK 14d ago

Plus when the Scottish geologist smokes in his suit. The other dude quips “you can’t smoke tobacco in there” and he responds with something along the lines of “yeah “tobacco””

37

u/Low_Test_5246 15d ago

I always did love this scene in Prometheus. How Vickers was like “You got to be kidding me?” The funny thing is if I were in her shoes. I’d be same too. You’re going in deep space to search for extraterrestrial beings that supposedly engineered humanity. Why bother celebrating a holiday about divination? (Not to mention the lack of love from her own father) But I also understand Janek’s side too. It’s the humanitarian side of us holding hope. Yeah this was a brilliant scene.

13

u/notHooptieJ 14d ago

You’re going in deep space to search for extraterrestrial beings that supposedly engineered humanity. Why bother celebrating a holiday about divination?

And where the fuck did he get a joint!? Is that astro-smuggling!?

LOL.

I saw this scene and the best part is the look of frustration and confusion as she isnt sure what she should be pissed about here. (or if she has a good reason even?)

2

u/Low_Test_5246 14d ago

Right?? That look of daggers flying from her eyes lol

2

u/realTollScott 14d ago

I never realized he was smoking a J till just now! I always thought it was a cigarette lol

6

u/suihpares 14d ago

Also he planned this by bringing a tree and bobbles with him into deep space.

2

u/McToasty207 13d ago

Good thing they cut it

I really like Prometheus, but the editing choices are quite perplexing

14

u/TinyDogGuy 15d ago

100% a Christmas movie.

As is Event Horizon…

(I know, wrong sub…but enjoy spreading SciFi-Horror holiday cheer.)

5

u/Norsebrow 14d ago

Amen broth... no, wait

3

u/Cruelparody 14d ago

Event horizon is a Christmas movie? I’m going to require an explanation

11

u/-Queen-of-wands Ripley 14d ago

Been saying this for years, and I’ve made it my “Die hard” Xmas movie event

It’s not Christmas until Shaw Gives birth to Baby Squid Jesus

9

u/Anon65583 15d ago

They were in hibernation for like two years. Give the Capt a break. 😂

9

u/siXcu 15d ago

Vickers are you robot?

7

u/chauggle 14d ago

Prometheus had the WEIRDEST fuckin hoodies.

3

u/mick_justmick 14d ago

I don't know man, I think they're pretty dope. Milburn's looked so cozy too 😆

1

u/chauggle 14d ago

I dug Milburn's - but this one? Weird tube hood and sleeveless? Wtf

2

u/mick_justmick 13d ago

It's like the sweater vest, but more party lol. I hadn't noticed it was sleeveless until you mentioned it🤣

11

u/CaledonianWarrior 15d ago

They clearly haven't learned about the dangers of smoking while putting up the Christmas tree in the future

5

u/mrs-jones1978 15d ago

Batman Returns is a Christmas movie.

9

u/Thats-So-Ravyn 14d ago edited 14d ago

I laughed about this with a friend the last time we watched it. The issue is that, unlike Die Hard, it being Christmas is irrelevant to the plot.

I argue Die Hard is a Christmas movie because if it wasn’t Christmas Eve, the building wouldn’t have been empty, the party wouldn’t have been happening, the security wouldn’t have been as lacking, John wouldn’t have travelled from New York to Los Angeles, and in general the whole movie couldn’t have happened. Ergo, it’s a Christmas movie because Christmas is vital to the plot.

In Prometheus, is there any part of the plot that wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t Christmas?

Gremlins I think isn’t the Gremlin actually a Christmas present? So again, that movie wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t Christmas?

Edit: Is it possible there’s a cut out there that says the reason they were so stupid and took their helmets off and thought that the goo and the snake thing were harmless is because they were drunk on egg nog? I’d argue that would make it a Christmas movie. 😂

5

u/G_Liddell Colonist's Daughter 14d ago

The Engineers decided to wipe out humanity at pretty much the date Jesus was killed. It's relative to the plot to the point of being a little heavy handed!

4

u/rfmartinez 14d ago

🎶🪗If you can’t be, with the one you love… love the one you’re with.🪗🎶

7

u/the_real_nicky 15d ago

How come the engineer that survived the crash at the end of the movie didn't just go to one of the other ships on the planet? Surely he knew there was more right?

13

u/mattmaintenance 15d ago

“This isn’t that kind of movie, kid.”

5

u/Redeyz 15d ago

Hope nobody is looking at their hair

7

u/mick_justmick 14d ago

Who said he wasn't after he took care of the remaining human(s)?

22

u/HexbinAldus WheresBowski 15d ago

Don’t think too hard when you watch Prometheus.

14

u/the_real_nicky 15d ago

I watched it again last night lol. Not gonna lie I've seen it like a million times, the opening sequence is like the greatest thing ever.

9

u/HexbinAldus WheresBowski 15d ago

Good on you! It’s a good looking movie for sure.

10

u/sanjosanjo 15d ago edited 14d ago

He wanted to kick the ass of whoever just destroyed his ship.

Unlike a lot of things in the movie, this part seems like a completely expected thing to do.

Also, he was grumpy because those damn humans just woke him from a nice long nap.

6

u/Inside-Net-8480 15d ago

Im srry but it was released in 2012... ?

My brother was born that year and seeing this film is a more prominent memory than that 💀

3

u/FKDotFitzgerald 15d ago

I swear I’ve seen the movie like 4 times and completely forgot this

8

u/Anima1212 15d ago

One of my favorite moments in the movie. (Along with Charlize’s and Idris’ interactions) wish Idris was in the franchise more 😭

5

u/coffeefan0221 15d ago

I found it weird, especially when they sleep together (not that we see it)- just kinda, unnecessary.

16

u/Mrhood714 15d ago

Like you could resist Idris

4

u/HexbinAldus WheresBowski 15d ago

That’s a good point though. lol

3

u/Anima1212 14d ago

I do agree them sleeping together was unnecessary and kind of out of nowhere. But the way they played off each other before was nice. It’s practically the only bit of humanity and vague warmth we get to see from Vickers. Makes her more realistic. (Vaguely) Some more scenes with that from her would’ve been nice also, with other characters possibly.. but I understand that’s not where the movie’s focus is..

1

u/BigDinoCord_5000 13d ago

How so? Most people like to get laid, even Vickers. After being in cryo sleep for 2 years, I get it.

0

u/HexbinAldus WheresBowski 15d ago

100%. It was extremely forced. And completely out of the blue. And entirely unnecessary. Practicing my adverbs.

10

u/Royal-Emergency8740 15d ago

What was the purpose of this scene. Other than to show what quirky guy Idris was.

42

u/Game_Over_Man69 15d ago

It's just a standard "fleshing out the crew" scene and they probably wanted to tie in Christmas with all of the other religious themes in the movie.

10

u/BaneShake 15d ago

I genuinely think it’s a holdover from when they were going to make it more explicit Jesus was an Engineer. It still sort of ties into themes, I suppose.

17

u/BadFont777 15d ago

You should probably just read a summary of movies instead of watching them if this kind of thing bothers you.

8

u/KingMottoMotto 15d ago

It's a film about how utterly hopeless and cold the universe is. The scene is just one of many where the crew members are trying to find a little bit of comfort in an unfamiliar and terrifying situation. It's not pointless, it's human.

Maybe the Avengers would be a bit more up your alley.

-15

u/HexbinAldus WheresBowski 15d ago

Right. The scene adds nothing. It’s so strange and out of place

20

u/Fickle-Economist4724 15d ago

The scene adds enough

It’s a character moment for Janek - he’s the captain and knows what helps crews on long missions, it demonstrates his experience

(You could argue ripley talking to Brett and Parker isn’t necessary, but it adds character)

We the audience now know it’s Christmas time, arbitrary for science fiction, but very very poignant for themes of creation, religion and shaws “immaculate conception” of sorts

-12

u/HexbinAldus WheresBowski 15d ago

I disagree.

3

u/stroopwafelling 14d ago

It even has a miraculous birth 😀

2

u/Carnby41790 14d ago

In one scene it's christmas. If he was really in the christmas spirit that MF be having green and red all over that ship. Just like Chris Columbus did in both Home Alone movies.

2

u/amadeuspoptart 14d ago

Hollywood Red Dwarf remake? Idris Elba as Lister?

2

u/Tight_Criticism_3166 14d ago

I agree with this 100%.

2

u/notHooptieJ 14d ago

was there ever a question?

2

u/Domo-kun_ 14d ago

Idris Elba was in Prometheus? I saw that movie like 3 times, how do I not remember this? Lol.

2

u/mick_justmick 14d ago

Did you fall asleep after the intro? Lol

1

u/Domo-kun_ 14d ago

Apparently, lmao.

2

u/Sea_Salamander_8504 14d ago

This is me convincing my spouse that David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises is a Christmas movie

2

u/GarglingScrotum 14d ago

Idris Elba is so fine in this movie

2

u/mick_justmick 14d ago

Actually, I think it's a religious movie. With Christmas, all the talk of faith, the cross being so prominant, the "where did we come from", the engineer sacrifice. Not to mention the human sacrifices from the ACTUAL prequel to Alien called AVP😆

(Flamesuit activated)

2

u/Bowendesign 14d ago

I’ll bite. So the backbone to the Engineers hating us is supposedly because we killed Jesus (see; Ridley Scott tells is this in an interview). The birth of Jesus was the culmination of the Engineers plan to create us in their own image. The creation myth in the context of the film is also the birth of our own end, via the black goo. The image of the Xenomorph is even a figure in a cross formation, relating back to Jesus (for some reason). The green rock signifies rebirth, as per Jesus’ resurrection where a rock was moved (big stretch but bear with me). The murals also relate to the mythology of creation and the birth of a new coming, in this case creatures resembling the Xenomorph. It happening at Christmas relates the birth of the creatures back to the Jesus myth, and you could say that the characters have all undertaken a pilgrimage to make offering to the new god. So therefore Christmas is integral to the plot, and therefore Prometheus is a Christmas movie.

Your TED Talk is my favorite TED Talk of all the TED Talks.

1

u/Bowendesign 14d ago

You could say it’s the perfect Ted Talkanism.

1

u/Interesting_Air8238 14d ago

I don't remember this, that's great. :)

1

u/McToasty207 13d ago

It's not in the theatrical cut

Was included as a deleted scene on the Blu-ray

And fan cuts added it back (Prometheus has really good fan cuts).

1

u/77slevin 14d ago

Agreed!

1

u/73Xerxes 14d ago

Yes it is...🎄

1

u/Hobbsendkid 14d ago

dude, amazing. prometheus was superior and tossed in the dust bin. smh...

1

u/Redgecko88 14d ago

Listen,... if Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Then Prometheus is a Christmas movie.

1

u/Vesuvius10 14d ago

Always makes me laugh that this man smuggled a Christmas tree onto the ship.

1

u/Decoy989 13d ago

If diehard is counted as a Christmas movie, why can't this

1

u/DJfunkyPuddle 13d ago

I have that Weyland shirt, need to order a new one since it's pretty faded.

1

u/joyibib 13d ago

Smoking on a spaceship…. That movies should have been a lot shorter

1

u/shhshdhdhddh 10d ago

Idris Elba is cool I really wish he was in better movies. Like I think promethues is event but alotta of his movies fucking suck
