Current events Eurostar limited availability over Christmas & New Year - book ASAP

Hi everyone,

As you may know the Christmas & New Year's holiday period is coming up. This means more demand and fully booked trains. Some routes are particularly busy, notably Eurostar from/to London (the passholder quota doesn't help). No service on 25th December from/to London.

You should book your Eurostar tickets/reservations as soon as possible.

The following tools may be helpful:

Don't forget to look at our wiki page too: https://interrailwiki.eu/eurostar/

At the time of writing (15th Nov) availability is heavily limited between 26th and 1st January.

Alternatives crossing the Channel are limited. Have a look at ferries, long-distance buses or in the worst case flights.

Feel free to ask questions in the comments underneath. We'll do our best to help!

PS: Trains do not run in the UK on 25 and 26th December. Eurostar does run on 26th.

Where exactly do I book a reservation for TGV Lyria from Paris to Zurich as a Eurail Global pass holder?

Hello all! I have a Eurail Global pass and want to reserve train seats from Paris to Zurich. The company appears to be TGV Lyria but when trying to book at b-europe, it displays a long list of discounts and loyalty cards, but nowhere I can find Eurail. Same thing at the sncf-connect and TGV Lyria sites. They all have longs lists of discount cards but no mention of Eurail. When I booked a train to Paris it was on b-europe, Eurail pass was listed as a clear option. I don't know how to do it on this route, I already read the wiki and scouted the sub but can't find an answer. Help, please!

Only place I am able to reserve seats is through Eurail itself. Is that my only option? I wanted to avoid paying the fee Eurail charges.

Anyone took Italy sleeper train in winter, is it always so hot?

Last night train from Rome to siracusa was like 28C in room, weak air circulation, unbearably hot. Have another trip via sleeper train as planned from Napoli to Turing and am debating whether to change plan. Anyone took sleeper train in winter? Is it THAT bad always?

Other Eurail Global Pass Travel Day Activation

I've been using Eurail passes since 2015, today the DB train ticket checker told me that I should be fined 100 CHF for activating my travel day on the rail pass app after leaving the station. I have never heard of this rule and have almost always activated my trips / travel days right before ticket check. I usually have multiple unactivated trips on the rail planner app and have always found this practice more efficient in the interest of flexibility. Does anybody know where I can find this rule written, if it exists at all?

Seat reservations France to Italy - Painfully expensive seat reservations

Hi! I recently purchased an interrail pass and would like to start my trip travelling from Southern France to Northern Italy. I have been looking at Nice-Torino; Nice-Gevova; Nice-Savona and the seat reservation fees are so expensive?? As in an extra 70 or more euros…is this normal? (I was looking into mid-May) Are there any other more affordable routes you could recommend?

Can you plan the interrail trip on PC and som other questions

Hello Everyone,

I have a couple of questions about using Interrail and how to make the most of it.

  1. I’ve installed the Interrail app on my phone, where I can plan and create trips in advance. However, is it possible to do the same on a laptop via the website? I can’t seem to figure out how to plan a trip there. When I go to “Trips and Plans” on the website, I can only add travelers and nothing else.
  2. On the mobile app, when planning a trip with two Interrail passes, I notice I have to add the trip separately for each traveler. It seems I can’t manage multiple people under a single trip. This means if I need to cancel or change something, I have to edit the trips for each person individually. Is there a way to manage both travelers under one trip?

Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide!

Booking seats

Why is it such a pain to book seats in Spain and Portugal every other country has easy online booking nope not with Spain and the eurail website won’t even let me book without a European number wtf!!! Gonna have to hopefully get seat reservations in the station, this needs to be addressed do not plan to go to Spain or Portugal with eurail unless you want to place bets on getting seats at the station literally 1 day before you leave because that’s literally your only option

Itineraries Winter city/town break, across northern Europe.

Okay, so my first Interrail trip to Europe, though not the first time travelling. Main purpose of the trip is quiet, cozy city/town breaks, sampling food and some of the sights, but mostly a relaxing time just soaking up the winter calm. The most I spend in any one location is 6 Nights, (other than Mölle).

Essentially what I'm wondering, is if any of these places are not worth the stay in Winter, or similar nice places would be better. Any recommendations for winter travel etc. Advice would be much appreciated.

Trip starts Jan 14 2025 - End of march

So, I've listed my planned destinations so far, my trip starts in London and things are spread over three months. My only fixed point is Mölle in Sweden.

I have a 10 Days over 2 Month pass, with any shorter trips not using one of my days.

Itinerary so far: - Lille (France) - Ghent (Belgium) - Leiden (Netherlands) - Utrecht (Netherlands) - Cologne (Germany) - Bremen (Germany) - Copenhagen (Denmark) - Malmo (Sweden) - Mölle (Sweden) only fixed point, last two weeks of Feb - Gothenberg (Sweden) - Oslo (Norway) - Bergen (Norway)

Potentially continue on from there depends how I'm feeling and how low my funds are getting.

Itineraries Zürich to Amsterdam - most reliable option for short vacation?

I'm planning to travel to the Netherlands (and back) next summer for a few days with my partner. I've done Zürich/Basel to Amsterdam and back a few times via Frankfurt and it was quite eventful to say the least. That was fine when I was travelling alone with little lugagge, but for our short vacation together, I'm not sure we're up for the challenge.

First of all, I love trains and I would travel anywhere by train if it was possible. My main concern is, that we spend half of our short vacation stuck on the German rails. For this trip the rain ride is not supposed to be part of the experience, but just get us from A to B as fast and reliable as possible.

So these are all the options I came up with and I would like to hear your experiences and recommendations for us. (We're probably buying single tickets far in advance so we can ignore passholder reservations etc. for the moment)

ICE Zürich - Frankfurt then ICE Frankfurt - Amsterdam

Scheduled Duration: 9.5 hours (based on my past experience closer to 12 hours in reality)

That's my usual route, with a planned connection time of 1.5 hours in Frankfurt. You'd be surprised (or not, depending how often you travel in Germany) how often I actually didn't make my connecting train. Bonus points if the next ICE to the Netherlands is cancelled (RE19 from Düsseldorf to Arnhem has saved me quite often).

I thought about going to Frankfurt in the evening and then going to the Netherlands the next day, but that doesn't really work with our schedule.

TGV Zürich - Paris GdL then Eurostar Paris-Nord - Amsterdam

Scheduled Duration: 8.25 Hours

I've never taken a train in France, so I don't know about the reliability there. My main concern here is switching stations in Paris which seems like a hassle. But this might be a viable alternative to the Frankfurt route if French trains are more reliable.

NighJet Zürich - Amsterdam

Scheduled Duration: 12 Hours (Doesn't really matter as it's overnight)

I've taken this train before. When it runs as planned it's nice, but it rarely does. Sleeper/couchette carriages break down and get replaced by seating cars quite frequently. Not an experience I'm looking to repeat. If it was reliable, this would be my train of choice every time though.

Flight Zürich - Amsterdam

Scheduled Duration: 1.5 hours + 3 hours for airport stuff and transit from and to the airport

I hate flying, even more so within Europe. Even though overall travel time is about half that of trains, I dislike the whole airport stuff so much. Sadly it does seem like the most reliable and least stressful option in this case.

I'm curious to hear what all of you think about these options!

Itineraries Amsterdam - Antwerp EuroCity Direct?

Update: Answer has been found (construction) and solution has been identified (transfer at the airport). Thanks yall! 🫶

Hi all,

I'm trying to plan a day trip to Antwerp Central from Amsterdam Central on Thursday, January 23rd. I see there are some trains listed as EuroCity Direct that take 1h38m to reach Antwerp Central (& back to Amsterdam Central). However, every single train says to call customer service and that it can't be booked online. I called NS's customer service and they were also unable to book this trip and had zero further information.

Are these trains sold out, is there construction interfering with the route (then why would they even be listed?), or do I book them another way than the NS International website?

Help is appreciated, please! The other listed routes have incredibly tight layovers (2-5 mins) so for peace of mind I'm trying to avoid those if I can book a direct train.

Itineraries Getting from London to Scotland

I am visiting a friend in Scotland for new years. He lives about 2h away by train from Glasgow. Now, all the trains to London are already booked. I also have secured myself a seat on the Caledonian sleeper to Glasgow. That's where I'm having doubts. Should I take the sleeper to Glasgow (in a perhaps uncomfortable seat) and then explore some Scottish towns before heading to my friend's? If yes where would you recommend I go visit? Or should I spend the night in London and use some daytime trains to get there, probably making some stops along the way? I've already seen Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool, where else could I stop on this route?

Thanks in advance!

P.S.: I have a first class interrail pass and I heard that there are some meals included on the train there in the UK? Is that true?

  2. are there any countries with big problems about wild camping and visiting lost places (of course i won't leave any rubbish behind and will respect everything etc.)?

  3. any recommendations for videographers in general/or hidden places?

  4. at the moment i really want to explore montenegro (kotor, dormitor?), bosnia (mostar?), north macedonia, bulgaria (rila?), greece (olympos?), but it all looks very beautiful. so any tips for the route?

  5. If any nature-interested people are also traveling there during this period, hit me up.

Many many thanks in advance for any suggestions :)))

One country pass When is the best time to activate my pass?

I have a one-day one-country pass for France tomorrow. All the reservations are made. When should I activate the pass? Once I’m at the train station? Or in the morning? Or should it be scheduled?

Itineraries One week in Lapland

Dear community,

I went to Lapland (Sweden & Finland) for a very short Interrail trip with a friend 2 years ago and absolutely loved it. We departed from Stockholm, went to Kiruna, spent one night there (even managed to see some northern lights!), then went down to Lulea, took a bus to Haparanda, walked accross the border and to Tornio from where we took the night train down to Helsinki and back to Stockholm by ferry.

Now that I have a bit more time and money on my hands, I'd like to bring my girlfriend (that I ironically met on this subreddit...) to Lapland for our 4 years.

This excursion to Lapland is part of a larger Interrail trip, but essentially, we have about one week to depart from Switzerland (12.02.2025), visit a few key places in Lapland and end up in Warsaw one week later for the rest of the trip. What would be your suggestions for a ~one week itinerary of the sort (departing from Lausanne on 12.02.2025 and ending in Warsaw on 18-20.02.2025)?

Here is a list of destinations I have on my radar so far, but I unfortunately don't know which ones are 100% worth and which ones could be skipped (time constraints...):

  • Bodo (Norway)
  • Kiruna (Sweden)
  • Abisko (Sweden)
  • Narvik (Norway)
  • Tromso (Norway)
  • Kemi (Finland)
  • Kemijarvi (Finland)
  • Rovaniemi (Finland)
  • Kolari (Finland)

Although I'd love to do most of the trip by train, I understand that the time constraints make this difficult with the sparse train network in this area. For this reason, I am completely okay with using trains, buses, ferries, planes and rental cars. We are avid Interrail travelers and absolutely do not mind an intense pace. We'd rather visit as much as we can in a week, than just spend 4-5 days in one place.

I'm open to any suggestions, advice and recommendations about places to visit and even potential itinerary ideas.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Delays etc. Countrywide train disruptions in Norway

Hi all, I’m currently interrailling through europe and just got hit by country wide train disruptions in Norway today. I was supposed to take the 12.03 train towards Bergen from Oslo S and alight at Myrdal and change towards Flåm, which was my end destination but due to signal fault, the train was delayed and then cancelled, causing me to miss my only connection to Flåm today.

VY offered to pay for my taxi to Geilo which was halfway to Flåm as they said Flåm was too far and no taxi driver would drive there from Oslo.

Fortunately, my taxi driver that drove me to Geilo was willing to drive me all the way to Flåm but I had to pay the extra cost from Geilo to Flåm out of pocket, which amounted to around 700 euros and told me to claim it back from VY later.

Can I ask if I am covered by eurail’s contract of carriage in this case and that I should be able to claim back the 700 euros for the extra taxi fare from Geilo to Flåm?

Thanks in advance!

Help me get out of Comanesti, Romania(need a nice route)

I’m here and need to make my way back to Western Europe — I have 7 days to play with.

One issue is I have a toddler so what I need is either:

  1. Sleeper trains with proper beds Or
  2. Lots of little journeys — max 4-5 hours — nice stops along the way.

I know I can go to Brasov and take the train to Budapest/vienna. I have been to all these cities (Budapest, Vienna and Brasov) so if there’s any way to go somewhere new like Serbia, Croatia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia or smaller cute places in Austria or Germany — it would be nice. I wouldn’t mind taking a flight from Bacău to get somewhere else if there really are no alternative train routes.

Thanks in advance!

Nice Barcelona Hostels for 18/19 yo's?

We'll be staying in barcelona in may and would like to know if anyone has hostel recommendations.

We'd like to stay in a more social hostel, but are afraid that the majority of travellers will be much older (late 20's/early 30's).

Is 5 travel days enough?

I’m new to interrail and just wanted to get some feedback!

So I’m thinking about going from Copenhagen - Berlin - Frankfurt - ( maybe wien or Salzburg) - Zagreb.

Will 5 travel days be enough for this? Aswell as any thoughts on the route and any possible issues.

This should be one travel day on a mobile pass, right?

OK. Let's start with the basics and quote Eurail's website.

"For mobile Passes, a travel day lasts from 00:00 (midnight) to 23:59 Central European Time (CET) [my emphasis]. Please note that some European countries do not observe CET. Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece are all one hour ahead (CET+1). This means there can be a difference in the start and end time of a travel day when compared to your local time while travelling."

So, with that in mind, is this one travel day or not?

2340 GMT Edinburgh - London Euston arr 0715 GMT [0040-0815 CET]
1124 CET [1024 GMT] London St Pancras International - Paris Nord arr 1348 CET
1555 CET Paris Est - Stuttgart Hbf arr 1904 CET
2029 CET Stuttgart Hbf - Budapest Keleti arr 0919 CET

I've been batting emails back and forth with Interrail support, and the support person is adamant my first train requires a different travel day even though it leaves after midnight CET. I've asked for the support to be escalated, but I feel a bit like I'm losing my mind here. It feels like Eurail BV only enforce the CET rule when it suits them, when the timezone is one hour ahead.

If it is one travel day, how best to put the first train in the planner to avoid using an extra travel day?

Other Punctuality of obb trains

Hi all ! I have a booking for a train Bratislava -> Zurich on Sunday 12/01 scheduled to arrive at 3:20, and a connection to Paris departing Zurich at 3:34. My question is : am I being too optimistic regarding the punctuality of obb trains? Are they usually on time ? Should I book a connection later on ? Thanks a lot for your insights!

Question about the ÖBB Vorteilscard

Hi, I'm 18 years old and I'm from Hungary, I would like to buy a Vorteilscard, but I don't kno which one I can. I saw that there is one for 19 euros, but I'm not sure if I'm eligible for that. So, my main question is: can I buy that, or I have to get the full price one? Also is it better if I have an online one or a physical one?
