Just to clarify, the Syrian Transitional Government has said that they have caught those responsible, and that they will pay for the installation of a new tree to replace the vandalized one. It does not seem that this Christmas tree burning was meant to be an assertion of an anti-Christian, anti-Christmas, or anti-Christianity position on behalf of HTS or the transitional government

Gotta make sure to clarify, before folks show up claiming that this proves that Syria is run by "al-Qa'idah Lite" or whatever. It remains to be seen how Syria will be governed, and God knows I have my share of skepticism and early disappointment on some fronts, but it's important to have the facts and be prudent

Dec 24, 2024 {SCMP by AFP] Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets in Christian areas of Damascus early on Tuesday to protest the burning of a Christmas tree near Hama in central Syria, journalists said.

“We demand the rights of Christians,” protesters chanted as they marched through the Syrian capital towards the headquarters of the Orthodox Patriarchate in the Bab Sharqi neighbourhood.

The protests come a little more than two weeks after an armed coalition led by Islamists toppled the government of Bashar al-Assad, who had cast himself as a protector of minorities in the Sunni-majority country.

A demonstrator who gave his name as Georges said he was protesting “injustice against Christians”.

“If we’re not allowed to live our Christian faith in our country, as we used to, then we don’t belong here any more,” he said.

The protests erupted after a video spread on social media showing hooded fighters setting fire to a Christmas tree in the Christian-majority town of Suqaylabiyah, near Hama. https://www.scmp.com/news/world/middle-east/article/3292180/hundreds-protest-syria-after-burning-christmas-tree-sparks-outrage-among-christians {Video is The Guardian}

"Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the main Islamist faction which led the uprising that toppled President Bashar al-Assad, said foreign fighters had been detained over the incident."

So, they had foreign fighters? Talk about Syrians trying to rebuild their country.
