“Marry, and you will regret it; don’t marry, you will also regret it; marry or don’t marry, you will regret it either way. Laugh at the world’s foolishness, you will regret it; weep over it, you will regret that too; laugh at the world’s foolishness or weep over it, you will regret both. Believe a woman, you will regret it; believe her not, you will also regret it… Hang yourself, you will regret it; do not hang yourself, and you will regret that too; hang yourself or don’t hang yourself, you’ll regret it either way; whether you hang yourself or do not hang yourself, you will regret both. This, gentlemen, is the essence of all philosophy.”

― Søren Kierkegaard

Hang yourself, you will regret it

That's highly debatable isn't it? I understand he was a Christian.

It’s all debatable. I think that’s the point.

When does the marriage regret kick in?

2

u/DragonfruitNew8570 3d ago

The day you do it.

Wonderfully expressed. Act too soon, and you may regret it. Act too late, and you'll wish you had acted earlier. The key is to go with the flow. Keep in mind that while you may believe you're in command of your mind, it's actually your environment that influences it. So, remember: just go with the flow.

While I agree with your comment, I would add that I think that the poem is about the fact that we can't be satisfied and that is a central concept of the human experience: the whatifs will haunt most of us and it takes a disciplined mind to go with the flow as you said. I also wholeheartedly agree that free will is just an illusion and, whatever the direction we take at any crossroad in life, we should not dwell on it because it was the unique choice under the circumstances!

I'm addicted to procrastination.

And I love it when day turns to night finally and all the morning-people go to bed lol.

This is a horrible advice. There are many situations in life where the best choice is to do a given thing later.

16

u/ExtensionBuilding854 6d ago

This isn't "horrible" advice, it's just not applicable to every single situation.

One way you CAN do it now is to identify the first step you can take, the smaller the better. Then set a timer for 15-25 minutes to make some great progress.

Bonus points if this is a priorty you've been putting off, and you'd really like to have it done.

This is Day 5 of my NYE Challenge: Time Block One Task.

It says specifically not to leave ANYTHING for later. Then it proceeds to make an analogy between life events and coffee getting cold. In my book this is just a total rubbish.

A general anything and anything on the menu are two different things. Ye' picked a weird one to be sassy with.

You are right, I've reached too far.

u/StrionicRandom 4d ago

r/getmotivated users when asked to extrapolate subtext from generalized information. Come on dude, I had the same thought, that there are things I wouldn't want to leave for later, but I also understand that those are the exception and not the rule, and that this rule will be recalled by a person usually when they're procrastinating or something similar so it's not necessary to account for the flip side.

Hmm, touche. I have ADHD and specifics get lost on me. I'm at a point in my life where I see the value of taking action, and for me, as a rule, it's better to just do the thing. Not in the case of things that would be self-defeating.

u/action_lawyer_comics 6d ago

I wouldn't worry about it too much. If this one speaks to you, great! Don't worry about people who spend more time picking aphorisms apart than trying to improve their lives.

That’s called hyperbole 🙄

1

u/DfensMaulington 4d ago

It’s also a singular statement from a person who probably had many different experiences in the world, which means taking this post as serious advice is not reliable.

u/FluffyCloud5 6d ago

Don't wait for your fractured leg to heal properly, do the marathon now.

Don't wait to see if the value of your shares increases, sell them now.

Don't wait until you're financially stable and settled, have a child now.

To say you shouldn't leave ANYTHING for later is awful advice. This advice works for some people, in some situations, some of the time. But saying you should always act now is rubbish.

13

u/action_lawyer_comics 6d ago

Pretty much any statement is useless if you try and apply it too broadly. You'll still need to think critically if you actually want to make anything of your life.

True life lessons cannot be learned in a quote or a small paragraph. These quotes have the same value as jokes. They are short-form entertainment for certain folks. They are packaged as serious, but should not really be taken seriously.

2

u/action_lawyer_comics 6d ago

I think they can be taken seriously. But you need to have to want to make a change before reading them. It's unlikely that this one image will have a profound effect but if you're working on making changes, this can keep you moving. If all you're going to do is poke holes in them, yeah, they'll collapse pretty quickly. But on the other hand, if that's what you're doing, then why are you even still subscribed to a motivational sub?

Part of me says that I should have had a child while on my parents military heath insurance plus my college degree was a waste of money and time. My mom was alive to be the free babysitter and now I am too old to

It is important to travel while you are young. Hostels and healthy bodies are best for backpacking

u/Positive_Quail6165 5d ago

I feel like I made decent progress this year in certain areas and I sure as heck will keep improving!

u/Seventh_Planet 6d ago

See you right now!

1

u/HelperBee2024 6d ago

It is also more important to cut the tv off and spend time with aging relatives. TV will always be there

u/scmstr 6d ago

Why are you attacking me like this

1

u/Over-Pick-7366 6d ago

Later, my knee won't hurt.

1

u/Fun_Spell_947 5d ago

that's kind of funny, but also makes me get negative thoughts for some reason?

1

u/Hot_moco 5d ago

I just want to relax a bit, man.

Regretting is part of life.. u can't get away with it no matter which step u choose to do.

1

u/alienclone 4d ago

well, I like cold coffee, nights, and grown up people.

1

u/Im_Nil 4d ago

Remind me to post my thoughts about this when I have some more time later.

u/eastamerica 4d ago

This sounds like crippling ADHD 🤣
