Gothic was a game so ahead of its time that most open-world RPGs still haven't caught up to it in terms of its immersiveness. The controls can be tough to get into these days, but the Switch port is apparently ok to play with a controller.

I really wish more RPG developers would play Gothic and learn from it. The only modern example that I can think of that is similar would be the Fromsoftware games. Sadly they don't have any lively cities and the few people in their games always die ^^

Drova Forgotten Kin came out recently and is basically just a 2D Gothic. It's very good.
