The books clearly state that Hedin used her and that he appreciated her contributions because they were useful to him.

Yes, that's why it was so humiliating for Lilly.

For Hedin, she was just another piece on the board he used for his own goal. He praised her because she fullfilled her role, but he didn't even considered her as his opponent.
