Quote British Gas want 4.3k for a new boiler

Hoping this is the right place/tag for this.

Joined up with BG the other week because it was top of the list on one of the price comparison sites. Tech came to check out the boiler before properly signing us up and we found out it was in really bad condition. There's parts of the metal that are corroded (the guy literally put his finger through the metal, that's how bad the corrosion was) and he put a disc in to stop any gas leaking.

So we need a new boiler. Completely fair. But 4.3k?

This includes a Hive we didn't ask for, multiple water treatments and system flushes, and various other odds and sods, plus the actual boiler for 1.3k and installation for 1.5k. He's also said we need a Worcester Greenstar 4000 when I'm fairly sure we have the 2000 right now and it's not been an issue. Either way it's combi to combi.

Just... wtf? Is there a cheaper way to sort this?

Edit: Went to dinner, came back, over 100 comments telling me to tell BG to hit the road jack. Appreciate it! It's me, my mum, and 2 kid brothers living together here, dad always handled this stuff so we just did what google and the engineer told us but from comments it looks like BG are a pretty bad option all round. This visit was to put us on the insurance with BG, so I reckon we just won't go on the insurance with them and will get a boiler elsewhere and look into other insurers. I've looked at a couple of the recommended options and they're all around half the price of BG so far, mostly because they're doing all the stuff BG said they'd do eg flush the system, get us a thermostat, do water treatments, for free as part of the installation, where BG was charging us hundreds for each of these things. Thank you!!!

Quote Been quoted £250 for kitchen tap replacement, is this normal?

I've just moved into a new place and have been attempting to DIY but won't risk it when it comes to plumbing. I bought a Doulton water filter but unfortunately I have the wrong kind of tap for it. I was quoted £250 including £170 for labour, is this a normal price? it seems pretty high from what I've found looking it up.

How much would you expect to pay for the following work?

A friend of mine, who's a bricklayer, rebuilt my chimney.

The scaffolding cost £700 and paid separately although he organised it.

Hi all I'm in a conundrum , had several builders out for quotes and they're wildly all over the place . From 20k to 80k.

Would anyone know how much ball park , a double dormer extension should be costing maybe around 7.5 to 10 Meters long .

Quote Mum was quoted £1,095 to have her small consevetory guttering replaced... so went BnQ instead...

Bought a £20 roll of gorilla wet patch tape stuff and saved £1,075.

For context: it's 15 years old but still solid as a rock, she found him on google (not checktrade) - turned up in a nice fancy van, well spoken, latest Iphone.. (Yes they are very nice phones lol) etc.. blah blah.

I said we just want the corners replaced, he had a look, started talking. - Can't even really remember what he was saying... thought he was quite reasonable and knew what he was talking about... yeah cool, drop us a qoute..

I was thinking, yeah not exactly gonna be cheap, i'd have thought ... 500 quid max.. I said I just wanted the corners doing as the rubber had gone and it was leaking and causing damp issues in the winter in one of the corners. - otherwise it was alright, I certainly didn't want the whole lot replaced as the rest was fine, nothing wrong with it.

Got quote today and my mum nearly had a fit. - it was a proper qoute, all broken down.. and he'd wanting to replace the whole lot including the downpipe.

Yeah fair enough people got kids to feed and a mrs to water but yeh I didn't say replace the whole thing...

Maybe I should have been clearer with what I wanted..oh well... the gorilla patch stuff works like a charm... didn't take long to put in place either... the super glue on a tape roll is a pretty cool invention.. lol

Quote I’ve been quoted £5k for a 15m2 patio to be laid in an area that has some existing slate gravel on it. Couple of questions below

  1. Is this a reasonable quote? It’s sandstone paving with a potential brick edging.

  2. This is way too expensive and more than expected (was hoping £2-3k) so for a diy novice with the right motivation is this a do-able job to do ourselves instead? B&Q/ online guidance seems fairly straight forward besides hiring a whacker plate etc

EDIT: Should clarify that the slate gravel shards aren’t a very thick layer and sit on top of a terrible quality weed lining thing so to pull this up wouldn’t be difficult at all, or difficult to dispose of. Pretty sure it’s just soil under that and no concrete apart from maybe some rubble

Quote Quote to refurb small bathroom

Post image
3 Upvotes

This is my current bathroom, in need of complete refurb, change electric shower to combi shower and adding a radiator. All of the quotes in my area (South Wales) have been £8-10K minimum! I can’t afford that amount even on finance, so just wondering if that seems expensive or whether DIY might be a better route. It’s the only bathroom in the house so might complicate things.

As the title says, do you think this is a fair price for a complete bathroom refit/redesign? Something to note is the render shows a shower tray in front of the bathroom, but this won’t be done in the full design. Should bring the cost down by approximately £1000. (Please excuse the current state of the bathroom)

Quote Internal kitchen renovation

Hi

I’m considering the potential purchase of a property and would like to understand the approximate cost of creating an open plan kitchen / living space.

The work would require removing the red lined wall, which presumably is load bearing so will need a structural engineer and RSJ.

I’d budget c.£15k for the new kitchen but any insights on anticipated labour costs for the structural work, kitchen installation, new electrics, plumbing etc appreciated.

Additional work could be to put bifold doors in along a portion of the rear wall. What would the approximate labour costs be to block up existing exits and undertake the required work to install a 4 panelled bi-fold door.

Property is in the south east and there is a driveway that could accommodate a very large skip. Given secluded nature wouldn’t be concerned with fly tipping but appreciate it is a consideration.

Thanks and please let me know if there’s a more suitable sub to post in.

Quote old mother been quoted....

My old mother has been ripped off before so I'm very wary of her doing things like this on her own but she just wont listen! She is from an age when you could trust people and she is far too trusting of others in my view.

Back garden is approx 23ft x 13ft, the current turf needs ripping out, ground needs levelling and prepping work then a new turf laying.

Quote is £1050 inc VAT. North of England.

I've checked out their work as much as i can online and their previous work to be fair looks very good, is that quote reasonable if they do a good job? All i want to know is its not crazy over the top.

Thank you more knowledgeable people.

Quote How much to replace these weathered bricks?

We have approximately 12 bricks that are weathered and need replacing.

So far this is our first time needing brickwork, so we were wondering what the estimates would be for this kind of work? We are based in the south

Quote Boiler replacement quote

Hi All,

The boiler at my house is very old (ideal elite rs50) and needs replacing. It is a conventional system. It's still in working condition but I'm nervous that it will stop working at an awkward time and I'm hoping to avoid that.

My house is a three bed semi with one bathroom. Also have garage on the ground floor and that's where the water mains comes in to the house. The gas meter is also in the garage.

I would like the new boiler to be fitted in the garage instead of where the current one is in the kitchen. This is mainly to avoid the flue going through the house and out on the roof. Current flue is asbestos and have already arranged for asbestos company to remove it when the boiler is being replaced.

I've had two quotes for to fit in a combi. Both companies said that it can't be done in the garage because it would be difficult to have the hot water return in there. They proposed solution was to route a gas pipe from the garage to the loft and put the boiler there. The pipe will be on the outside of the house. One quote was £5500 + VAT (or no VAT if I paid cash...) and the other £5000 +VAT. Is this a reasonable price?

Both companies said that even putting it in the kitchen won't work as the gas pipe isn't the right size in the kitchen. It is 22mm in the garage but not in the kitchen.

These prices are very close to air source heat pump quotes I got and I'm just wondering if should just go with ASHP and ditch gas. The boiler is the only thing that's uses gas in the house.

Sorry for the wall of text!

Quote Been quoted 350 to have the plasterboard replaced in our kitchen ceiling after water damage. Is this reasonable?

Cost doesn't include plastering but just the plasterboard. The ceiling is 8 by 6.

Is this worth it?

Quote New Windows and Front Door Expensive?

Just getting quotes in to replace windows in my late-mothers home based in Greater London South.

5 new Rehau windows, 1 Rehau back door, 1 generic composite front door and also asked to replace glass in an older kitchen extension window.

Quote came up to £8.4k. Felt a bit on the expensive side but is that the going rate nowadays? Expecting a couple more quotes before the weekend at least.

UPDATE: Second quote came in. Rehau windows again - £7.2k

UPDATE 2: Third quote was £12k!!!

Quote How does this quote look to you?

Post image

We want to get some Internal structural work done, this is the highest quote we've received, the other two where £2000 cheaper but had no detail in the quote.

I'm not quite sure what the statement regarding the allowance of £3850.00 for the window and doors means.

Does this quote seem reasonable?

Cheers!

Quote Need a rough idea of costs for the house I am purchasing.

I am a first time buyer and I have just had my homebuyers survey back for a 2 bedroom, mid-terrace house in Bolton. There is clearly a lot of work needed, and I'm somewhat panicking because I intend to spend most of my money on the purchase and have no friends or family who can support me. I also don't really have an idea of how much things cost.

The list of important work is below, I am wondering if anyone can hazard an educated guess as to how much these things would cost to do?

Roof and chimney

Chimney needs repointing and vegetation removing, guttering needs remedial work, the roof ridge needs some short-term repair in terms of mortar and there are a few chipped slates.

Damp

The house needs a damp investigation and treatment as some of the walls do have damp. The surveyor has been unable to identify the cause of the damp however.

Windows and doors

All of the windows and doors need to be replaced. There are 2 windows at the front and 3 at the back. The double glazing has been compromised and the fittings are shot.

Quote Joinery material price check

Weekend DIY projects require some wood battens to build some shelves and material for wall moulding. Where should I get these material that a trade would? I went into B&Q and Homebase, are they the norm price? Thanks in advance for helping.
