Advice Is this too big for polyfilla?

Post image
Upvotes

Probably a stupid question but I’ve tried googling it but I can only find reference to how deep you can fill rather than how wide. I’ve never filled more than small screw holes with it so no idea what’s possible. We had a baby gate mounted in this archway between rooms and it was attached to a piece of wood as it got pulled out of the wall previously. Now it’s no longer needed I’ve pulled it off but I’d underestimated how much no more nails my husband put underneath and it’s pulled the plaster off. Husband is currently in bed after a night shift and I’m wondering if there’s any way to try to remedy this before he gets up!

First picture is how it was (That's another part of the bathtub). Second picture how it currently is.

I have the tiles, but I have no idea what type of products should I buy to fix it.

Thanks!

Under cabinet lighting...

Hello hive mind, hope the post Christmas pre nye abyss is treating you well. I've been thinking about installing under cabinet lighting on these 3 cupboards. Ideally they'd be alexa controllable and with no plugs or mad wiring. I realise that may be too much to ask. Any ideas how I might go about it? Thanks all!

Does this Virgin Media installation look up to standard? Drill through roof cover safe? Should I complain?

Upvotes

I recently had Virgin Media install a router at my home, and I’m not sure if the work they’ve done is up to standard. There are a few issues that are bothering me, and I’d really appreciate some advice.

Here’s what’s happened:

  1. They drilled through a piece of my roof cover to run the cable. Is this safe or standard practice? Could this lead to leaks or other issues down the line?
  2. The cable isn’t properly attached to the wall. It’s lazily draped in a way that looks messy and unprofessional (although I can probably mend this myself by fixing it to the wall at some point)
  3. Overall, the finish looks pretty sloppy, and I’m wondering if I’m being unreasonable in expecting better workmanship.

Should I complain to Virgin Media about this? If so, what’s the best way to approach it? Do they typically take responsibility for fixing subpar installations or damage caused to the property?

(In the photos there are 2 black cables - you can ignore the bottom one going into the white part of my porch, that ones for the boiler.)

Thanks in advance!

Advice How much do I offer my recently laid off father in law for this work?

Upvotes

Hi all, so my father in law is an experienced builder for decades at this point, he always offers to help us out, but I want to offer him to do some work for us that requires me to not pitch in at all, and also helps him out after being laid off just before Xmas....

Here's my previous post of my living room, I've concluded that I want to knock out the fireplace, tidy that wall up, and fix up the skirting board so I can get a plumber over to move the radiator into it's place.

How much would you charge for the above? I'm struggling because I don't know how much it would typically cost, and I know if I ask him he'll lowball me out of pride, and so I'd rather get an idea of prices and offer him the going rate so even if he tries to lowball me, it'll at least be close to the correct amount.

Spot in our shower always seems wet and is getting limescale.

This patch of grout in our shower always seems to be a damp and will get limescale after a few days. We had the shower retitled last year on an insurance job. The builder thinks it’s external because “that’s where the water will splash when you’re in the shower” but after having been away for a few days over Christmas it’s looking like this. If there is a leak behind the tiles this is the only place we can see any evidence of it. Looking in the room directly below doesn’t show any patches. I know the how attachment is pointing towards the spot in the picture but it’s angled away so it’s definitely not that. Any ideas what could be happening?

Splotchy windows

We moved into a 1960s semi detached about 6 months ago and have started renovating the bedrooms ourselves. The walls surrounding the window frames in 2 bedrooms have this odd splotchy appearance and texture. Something seems to have gone wrong under the paint, but I’m not sure why/how, and what to do to rectify it.

Is it just a case of sanding it down before painting? Or will it need to be plastered again?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!

My dad is bringing some poison tomorrow, but apart from hitting the ceiling with a broom when the assholes get too close to above the bed is there anything I can possibly do to get some sleep now? Dog barking has done nothing

Building Wall Insulation

Recently discovered we have a void in the wall cavity between the outer brick wall and the inner plasterboard wall, upstairs and downstairs. I can't get in to see properly without making a much bigger hole, but my dad (he lives in an identical house up the street) reckons if it ever actually had any insulation, it has either sunk right down to the bottom, or has just disintegrated over the years.

What's the best (most balanced in terms of cost Vs effort Vs effectiveness) way I can put cavity insulation in here? Ideally I'd like something less invasive (expanding foam or something?) where I can just "squirt it in" so I don't need to do a huge amount of wall repair afterwards, but obviously if invasive is the only option I can replace the boards etc, I'd just prefer not to.

Surely someone has invented some amazing modern product that is both easy, cheap and effective? 😅

Advice Struggling to drill through limestone wall

I’m trying to fit a ring doorbell and I’m having to drill 4, 6mm holes. I’m using the 18v dewalt drill with a 6mm masonry drill bit.

It’s a super slow and painfully loud process and the drill keeps cutting out when I’m drilling.

Is it even possible to drill through this dense of a brick with my little drill?

Where can I get a shelf like this / get it made?

I want to mount a projector on a shelf like this on a corner wall.

The one in this image does the trick- but it's in the US, and with shipping and custom fees would end up costing £££.

I'm based in south east London, near Greenwich- any suggestions for where I could go to get one cut, or find one ready made?

It needs to have wall-to-far-edge measurements of 18", and I'd prefer wood to mdf or ply so I can paint it the same colour as the wall. Also how can I reinforce the fixtures to make sure that it can bear the load? Projector weighs 13.5lbs.

I can't mount it to the ceiling because of a pendant lamp that would obstruct the projection.

Thank you!!

Flooring Awkward hallway shape. How to measure for laminate?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Here is my very professional artists rendition of the rough shape and measurements of my downstairs hallway. I'm planning on putting down a nice patterned laminate of some kind, mainly for cost but also because of an energetic 8 year old running around, it's a bit softer and easy to clean! I have a load of vile ceramic tiles to prize up before I can install it, but I'm just wondering how to go about measuring it when the time comes. Can it be done all in one piece? Would there be loads of waste?

Is this gap causing the draught?

Thumbnail

I have a room below this roof which was made as part of an extension in 2019. It is like an ice box in winter and doesn't warm up at all even with the heating on. There is definitely insulation above the ceiling.

I've felt the draught coming from under the skirting and have blocked it with foam strips. Also had the windows and french doors checked and they have no gaps when closing.

I had a roofer around today and asked him to have a look at it. In his opinion, the gap is there for any drips from the tiles to come down the felt and into the drain. He lifted the felt and found a gap above the cavity wall which he filled with expanding foam. However, the room still feels cold.

Calling the original builder back isn't an option as he left the work unfinished and I had to get someone else to come and do the finishing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Advice Painting chimney breast and log stores - cats not included

Thumbnail

After some advice on the best strategy for painting this feature in the living room. We’ve taken this over from the last owners and are trying to make it good.

The wooden frames are the basis of some shelves currently being cut, so they will be solid top and bottom and will either be solid wood sheet / veneered / painted, we don’t know yet.

We are wanting the fireplace to be blue - the colour swatch on the wall - and the rest of the room will done in Egyptian cotton.

My current plan is to do all room facing walls in the blue, including the small upstands on the bottom of each log store, and the insides of all the cubbyholes in white / E.C.

Is that the best plan do we think? I would have done just the chimney in blue but because the chimney has been blended into the bottom of the log stores, it’s now one wall so I feel like it needs to carry on across the full length of the build out.

Advice Socket Space is taken up by a switch with no socket, what is it for?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Bare with me as I'm out of my depth here. In my room at home I have 2 sockets under my desk. One is the conventional one we are all used to, it has the connector to plug into the mains and of course an on/off switch in the corner.

However the one right next to it is something I can't recall seeing anywhere else, even in my own home. It's just a switch, nothing else. It doesn't have the 3 prongs connector or the 2 pronged bathroom connector, it is just a switch.

I did a little looking around prior and my closest find is that it's the housing for a separate fuse to act as a failsafe, however the example of that that I found was used outside, I assume because some power tools and outdoor appliances pull more power or have a higher chance of tripping the fuse? Again not an area I know much about. If that's the case, it seems odd to have one in a bedroom where I guess the risk is smaller. Another key difference was that on that cover plate there was a removable piece to allow access to the fuse (I guess to replace it if need be) whereas mine does not have that.

Soo yh, massively confused and a bit curious as to what the switch does, it doesn't turn the neighbouring socket on or off. Picture provided at the top.

I painted my glazed doors black. Apart from hating them because the glass gets grubby really quick, I have areas where the paint leaked through the tape and general splash zones. Any advice for how to get it off?

I already tried white spirit on a rag and also a scraper

Cheers!

Flooring How to use flooring spacers properly? They are too small compared to the laminate guideline

Upvotes

This is a bit of a stupid question, but I got to ask...

Laying my first laminate flooring, and I'm having some confusion with the spacers I bought.

The flooring requires 10-12 mm spacing from the wall. The spacers say they are 10-12 mm, but when I measure them, the thickest part is only 6mm.

Every single youtube video, guide (Step 3), and tutorial shows a single spacer being used. I've seen some product reviews mentioning doubling them up, and on screwfix, I found a Q&A comment that says this too.

I've had a friend say that when laminate flooring says it needs 10-12 mm spacing, it's actually 6mm on EACH side of the floor. So one spacer on each end makes up the 12mm needed.

So I'm losing it. There's nothing official about this anywhere. Do you guys have advice?

Thank you!

Advice Scratches in bathroom sink

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hi everyone! Does anyone have any thoughts on how/whether I can remove these scratches from my bathroom sink? No idea how they were caused (done before we moved in). We are having our bathroom retiled next week and I’m trying to figure out if this sink is okay/fixable or if we should replace. I like it otherwise so would rather not replace. They don’t feel indented and the sink doesn’t seem to be leaking. Thanks.

Advice Help removing extractor fan to install backdraft damper

Upvotes

I have a Greenwood airvac cv2gip extractor fan, which I would like to remove from the wall in order to access the pipe so that I can install a missing backdraft damper in the pipe. I've been looking at the installation instructions but have come a bit stuck.

I have removed the outer front plate, and the 3 fixing screws, however I can't now seem to open the main cover of the fan to access the further screws inside securing it to the wall.

I understand there is a hinge, but I'm not sure where and attempting to prise the cover off hasn't worked.

Any ideas or information about the location of the hinge appriecated
