Beautiful, so moody and nostalgic. Is it somewhere in the UK?

u/frsphoto Oct 02 '22
Yeah, Castle Combe in Wiltshire.

Oh, isn't the the village where they often shoot movies? I think we learned about it in our English classes a few years ago.
15
u/lostlookingforamap Oct 03 '22
I thought that was lacock.
14
u/alxw Oct 03 '22
Both have had their fair share of movie shoots. And they’re only a 20 min drive from each other!

u/lostlookingforamap Oct 03 '22
only one had ranulph fiennes blow up a dam after the filming of Dr Dolittle because he thought it ruin The look of the town.

I followed your reference. Fascinating. But they didn't actually get to blow it up so was it at last dismantled? One would think 20 Cent Fox could have found another already existing body of water for those shots. 😖 Bully for Sir Fiennes! And thanks to you, Sir Lost. 😃

Yes, I learned about that one too. it's been a few years, but reading the name brought me back to it.

Moody, cold, desolate, old and not cozy at all. Imho.

u/MandyMooTooTwo Oct 03 '22
I agree. It's beautiful, I love it and it would be great for "pics" sub, but not cozy. Maybe if there was warm golden light in the windows, from the fireplaces, you could imagine coziness. Beautiful picture but in the wrong sub imo. Maybe if there was a "moody and atmospheric"

Gorgeous! Where is this?

Castle Combe UK, I live and work either side of the village so get to have this as my short commute to the studio.

u/TedMerTed Oct 03 '22
Any idea as to the age?
44
u/mchobbs Oct 03 '22
Wiki states “No new houses have been built in the historic area since about 1600”
50
u/frsphoto Oct 03 '22
My house was built in 1751. Well according to an engraving above my front door. Apparently one of the three oldest buildings in the village and it was built as the headmasters building.
7
u/mchobbs Oct 03 '22
Hmm Wiki is wrong then … bummer … thanks for the info! Such a gorgeous part of the country. It (Cotswolds) took my breath away when I first experienced it!

The chimney pots aren’t indicative of the age of the entire building. If someone who lives in a 100-year-old house gets double glazed windows installed you wouldn’t base the house’s age off of the windows.
Also building material in houses like this were dictated by locality, not fashion. The Cotswolds doesn’t have rich clays required to make bricks but it does have lots of chalky golden sandstone. Besides that, brick was actually far more popular during the Tudor–Stuart period. By the Georgian era, sandstone and granite were by far the fancier fashionable materials to use in stately homes. (Again, the regular folks who lived in villages just like Castle Combe would’ve resorted to whatever was to hand.)
The buildings in this picture date from around the 17th century.

Stopped there while on a trip in the summer time. Ate at one of your pubs and it was magical. What a wonderful village.

So beautiful! I lived in Stamford UK for 3 years and miss is dearly.
21
u/DependentFamous5252 Oct 03 '22
Lived there when I was a kid.
Never realized how beautiful it was until I left.
Kids are dumb. At least I was.
14
u/Skeiterbug Oct 03 '22
Oh how I understand you. My husband and I returned to his home with our children recently. He wanted them to see where Daddy grew up. When we arrived, after connecting with longtime family friends, we began exploring the countryside. It was stunning. His words, “Growing up all I ever wanted was to get out of here. Now, as a father, all I want is to raise the kids right here.” Hindsight is 20/20.

u/Outside-Island-206 Oct 03 '22
This is me too! Grew up near there, got bored and moved overseas. I didn't realise at the time but I didn't really want to leave for good, I just needed to travel and have a change of scenery for a while. Sadly I only appreciated what a great place it is when I no longer had the option to move back!

Oct 03 '22
We’re from the US, so our overseas travel was to there. Lived there 3 years then was unexpectedly and unwillingly forced back home to the US because of Covid. We had planned to spend many more years there. Now it’s hard to get back because my husband has military obligations here for 4 more years before he can retire. Unfortunately the kids only have 5-6 years left of school until they graduate and move on to university, so we’re out of time to get back there with them. It makes me deeply sad. Half the fun was being there with them.

Life is truly strange and mysterious. Having made a new life overseas now I wonder what scared away.
3

I had my 3 kids with me there and they loved it. We’ve been wanting to go back. Did you go to the school there?

u/oxymoronisanoxymoron Oct 03 '22
I lived in Findon village (similar but not as beautiful as this) from ages 2 until 18. I hated it, but now when I look back it seems so idyllic and beautiful. It's a kid thing.

Do people really live in places like this?!
Looks straight out of a fairytale
45
u/BassBanjo Oct 03 '22
Somehow yes aha
I lived near a village called Downham, it's a beautiful little place very similar to this, there are no visible telephone poles or street lamps (other than a few) etc as they want to keep it as traditional as possible if that's the best way to put it
27
u/mama_emily Oct 03 '22
Would you like to become great friends and invite me to visit sometime?
I’ll find my own lodging of course, would never put you out….good friend.
13
u/shuttheshadshackdown Oct 03 '22
Glad to see you two are hitting it off, as the mutual friend I’m glad to be around as a travel companion.
9
u/CocoaMotive Oct 03 '22
My parents live near Downham, used to go and feed the ducks there as a kid. Do you still have to apply to the Earl to live there?
9
Oct 03 '22
It's a fairytale fucking town, isn't it? How can a fairytale town not be somebody's fucking thing? How can all those canals and bridges and cobbled streets and those churches, all that beautiful fucking fairytale stuff, how can that not be somebody's fucking thing, eh?

Yeah theres a few villages like this around the UK. This village 'Castle Combe' is very pretty and there a fair few others in the area known as The Cotswolds
The wider area of that part of the UK is called The West Country and if you're a fan of cozy places the West Country has you more than covered
3
u/haybayley Oct 03 '22
Only some of the Cotswolds is in the West Country (the Gloucestershire and Wiltshire bits). The rest is in the West Midlands (Warwickshire/Worcestershire) and the Home Counties (Oxfordshire). They all have an abundance of cosy and pretty villages, albeit perhaps as iconically idyllic as the Cotswolds!
8
u/dean_c Oct 03 '22
Yes and no. There are residents but make no mistake - this whole village is a tourist attraction. It’s tiny and there is a big car park at the top of the hill next to it that coach loads of people arrive to every day. If you arrive there early on a quiet weekday you might have a chance to get a shot like this - but most of the time it’s over run with tourists.
5
u/pwlife Oct 03 '22
Yes! I spent the summer in a cottage in the area (The Cotswods), one of the best vacations my family has ever taken. Picture perfect villages, amazing walks and wonderful people. Missing it right about now.

I had the best chai latte of my life in that town!

How much does a house on a street like that cost?

u/Grijnwaald Oct 03 '22 edited Oct 03 '22
Average over £650,000 as of last year, though that must've gone up buy now.

Funny how the lowly peasant dwellings of the 1600s are now the homes of the elite.

Eh?
1
u/DavidNipondeCarlos Oct 03 '22
They built a copy of that style place in Japan.

u/Grijnwaald Oct 03 '22
Right, well I followed the coordinates and I must say it looks absolutely nothing like Castle Combe.

Also it’s called little British town https://maps.app.goo.gl/qDYSaRkw2kAQcZ696?g_st=ic
1
u/Grijnwaald Oct 03 '22
Lol that is so Japanese!
1
u/DavidNipondeCarlos Oct 03 '22
They tried though. I discovered it by accident riding a bicycle.
1
u/Grijnwaald Oct 04 '22
Well it is certainly an attempt. I feel like that Japanese would have a restaurant in "British Town" called "London Pub" and a "Big Ben Barber Shop".

Someone needs to share the scene from the grand tour when they go here, to end up at the massive drifting circuit located in the same village, it's crazy

Managed to bang my head on the ceiling of the pub, even though the "mind your head sign" was very much visible.
