DINING AREA Mural I handpainted in my dining room.

u/fae_forge Jun 25 '21
Did you pick the chairs to match the paint or paint to match the chairs? This is such a vibrant and joyful room! I love it

u/Pinkpurplegreentea Jun 25 '21
Thanks! The chairs came first ☺️
44
u/Tattycakes Jun 25 '21
Please tell me you dragged a chair into the paint shop and said “match this!” 😂

I think we’re apart of the same decor group on Facebook because I saw your post there as well!! Small world!! Love the birds!
41
u/ConfirmedBasicBitch Jun 25 '21
Whaaaat?! There are decor groups on Facebook?! Care to share your favs?

u/Jerico_Hill Jun 25 '21
Mate there's loads, only reason I still have Facebook. Off the top of my head there's:
I'm high on DIY decor
Moody Maximalism
The Escape To The Chateau Fan Club

I think the majority of hobbies and interests all have 43565 Facebook groups.
I know Facebook isn't the "cool thing," but for me it's been an awesome for keeping in touch and building a network of with people with who have the same hobbies as me.

What kind of paint did you use for the mural? I’m interested in doing this kind of thing in the future when (if lol) I ever own a home. Beautiful work.

I mean idk about OP, but that style of painting is preety standard old Chinese art and it comes in different background colors too.
PS Sorry if im being annoying. :) Its a rare occurance to get to use my teeny tiny amount of art history knowledge.
18
u/wild_penumbra Jun 25 '21
Agreed, it immediately reminded me of old Chinese art I've seen in books, films and museums.

I really want to paint my home's walls vibrant and joyful colors. They make me feel cozy and happy. But ever since my in-laws said it would hurt resale + turn away prospective buyers later on, and that darker/rich colors don't look good, I haven't made the leap. My anxiety tells me everyone will judge and think it's ugly. I know I shouldn't care what they think and I can always change it later but. Anxiety.
47
u/szobl Jun 25 '21
Don’t spend all your time in your house decorating it for imaginary people who don’t even live there!
If paint colors scare away prospective buyers, they weren’t that interested in the house to begin with. When we bought ours a few years ago, we had to deal with sea greens, lemon yellows, and melon pinks… they were atrocious colors, but not enough to make it impossible for us to see the house underneath.
Start small, with just one room, and see how that makes you feel!

I love strongly painted rooms. When you sell just get a painter through and do the whole house cream for the sale. Would need a freshen up anyway. Live a little. It’s paint! So easy to cover if it doesn’t work
3
u/SaltyOpinionNo1Asks4 Jun 25 '21
Good idea! Yes, in fact the last owners left extra buckets of grey and white. I can always redo it
10
u/mrsmoose123 Jun 25 '21
You need joy in life just as much as you need safety. Anxiety has given you the risk, you've identified the solution (repaint), now it needs to back down.
Your inlaws may have wanted to give you useful information, but it's your home.
4
u/SaltyOpinionNo1Asks4 Jun 25 '21
That makes sense. This helps convince my brain that painting will fix my anxiety, not make it worse. Thank you!

u/jemy74 Jun 25 '21
Last winter, I renovated my kitchen and painted the ceiling a vivid peach color and all the brown wood trim white. I love how it looks with my new dove gray cabinets and it makes me happy every time I see it. I know a lot of people wouldn't chose to have a pink ceiling but it's my kitchen and I can paint it whatever I damn want. You can start small and try an accent wall or a bathroom and see how it you like it. I suspect it will open the flood gates once you see how nice it looks. You can't please everyone so you might as well please yourself.

u/SaltyOpinionNo1Asks4 Jun 25 '21
I really like the last sentence you said. I'm going to keep that in mind whenever I decide something for myself. Thank you!
6
u/alightkindofdark Jun 25 '21
If you decide to resell, then paint it neutral colors before putting it on the market. Paint is the easiest thing in the home to 'fix'.

Make the leap. Do it for you, not someone random stranger (with the exception of me, who's cheering you on and will demand updates, etc.)
When resale time comes, the agent will make you paint the whole space light gray anyway. :)

Wow!! This looks like Cara Delevingne’s Dining Room Gucci Wallpaper in her new house tour on Architectural Digest!

Ha, well spotted! I came here to say this looks like Gucci Wallpaper

u/Anastasiagold1 Jun 25 '21
It’s so fabulous. This is better than the wallpaper !! @pinkpurplegreentea

Ooh! This is absolutely stunning! Question for you: I've been considering purchasing that rug, but am worried it may be too much pink. It looks more peach in your photos. Would you say that the color in the photo reflects the true color of the rug?
5
u/Pinkpurplegreentea Jun 25 '21
I think the photo is accurate, but that being said the vibrancy varies even across the rug itself as there are due variations. Some rugs may be brighter than others, but even in the brightest spots the pink is a super pretty hue. I used this in a living room for a couple years and didn’t feel it was “too much”. But also I happen to love pink; a lot.

u/Adorable-Preparation Jun 25 '21
Ah if you don’t mind, could you link the rug? It looks perfect for a room I’m putting together!

Where did you get the dining table?
2
u/Pinkpurplegreentea Jun 25 '21
I got it about a decade ago at Crate and Barrel. Looks like they still offer it: the Basque dining table.

I've come back to this four times now. It is beautiful. I like your style it reminds me a little of early arts and crafts design.

u/chessna Jun 26 '21
This might be my favorite room I've seen on this forum. You did an amazing job, I love the color combinations.

That is incredible! I would hire you to paint one in my house! I love it! It reminds me sort of Holman of Klimt’s swan paintings.

That looks like it was inspired by that crazy expensive Gucci wallpaper of herons that's like $500 for 2 panels. What a great way to get the same effect without the crazy price.

I almost bought that rug at HomeGoods!!! Instead I have it's sister in a diamond pattern in roughly the same colors! Love it!!!!
1
u/MsTponderwoman Jun 25 '21
I love all the colors. I feel like it’s a bit of a missed opportunity to have not used the slightly green blue of the rug on the walls as a more realistic background for the birds though. Everything’s very pretty nonetheless. I love it when someone can mix different ages in a setting and it all works (e.g., traditional cabinet with modern chairs and chandelier).

Question for OP or any one with artistic ability lol - how much would something like this be commissioned? I’d love to get a mural like this but I have no idea how much it costs, and I don’t want to insult an artist by low balling them or something at all either. Not the same exact thing obviously, but something with the same amount of detail and size.

Please post this over on r/DesignMyRoom and r/HomeDecorating. I'm always telling people that stunning spaces don't have to cost a fortune.

u/GianniScrunch Jun 25 '21
There's an old Irish myth called the Children of Lir about 4 children who were turned into swans by their stepmother for 900 years. This mural instantly made me think of it.

This is STUNNING. Birds are always the right choice and this colour is the perfect blend of vibrancy and vintage ? The scale is whimsical and fun. I feel lazy for not painting more in my own home lol.
