Recommendation Looking for a good diner
Good morning and Happy holidays!
Moved down from NYC almost 3 years ago and I have yet to find a good diner down here. If y’all have any recommendations in the greater charlotte area that has diners lmk. I’d look on google but some people amp up reviews 🤣 I live up in Concord so I don’t mind a drive if the spot is 🔥

Landmark is, a landmark. Great place. Just like San remos was and liberty east. If you're a OG, you remember knife and fork.
Would circle G or shuffle town grill fit the bill?

Native NYer here who loves shuffletown, Circle G, and Stockyard! Not quite the diner feel but similar especially if just getting breakfast.

Another NYer (Long Island) who loves Shuffletown. I need to try Stockyard, I've heard good things and it's not far.

Yet another LIer here. Thank you! I just googled Shuffletown and Stockyard and they’re 15 and 18 minutes from me. I’ve been trying to find diner food down here for 17 years. Every single place that claims to be “NY Diner” style food has been a terrible disappointment so far.

Might not be the traditional NYC diner vibes for all of them but we have a quite a bit of those truly good mom-and-pop diner-like spots in Charlotte and Concord
Waffle House, Maria's Grill, Landmark, Parkway House, Breakfastime Anytime (concord), Pressley Park, Sunrise, Coffey Creek Cafe, Mr. C's (concord), Mr. G's, Sunflower Restaurant.

If you’re in Concord I’d say check out Wayside. It’s definitely not NYC style diner but it is certainly a southern dive diner type of place. I go there for breakfast sometimes - often served with a side of Jesus.
Although I recently went there with a black friend who told me he doesn’t like when we meet there. When I asked why he said “have you ever seen anyone in here that looks like me?” It was at that moment that I realized he had a point and that awareness had escaped me. So sharing for you.
With that said….they do serve liver mush. lol.

Presley Park! Or Big View Diner but Big View has had recently ownership change so I don’t know if it’s any good anymore

This is the only question I ever respond to.
Shuffletown is the answer.

Ooohhh, Shuffletown is the dirty little sister to Chucks, on statesville.
Chucks has an amazing menu and they do it right. Tell Phil that Steve sent ya.

Redeye diner is close. You arent gonna get nyc vibes here. Any place that is above mediocre is gonna be packed. So finding somewhere to chill for a few hours is really hard to find. Thats what I loved about diners in nyc. You could linger. I believe redeye is open 24hrs. Lots of diners here, but with a more southern fare. You can get biscuits and gravy vs a nova platter. I haven't found a greek diner like nyc. Though Mad Greek has diner vibes, but not diner food. I miss Neptune diner. That place was amazing.

Skyland and Midnight Diner are our favorites. Not a diner but breakfast and lunch spot in Matthews is Stacks. My friends from NY and NJ love some of their sandwiches. I love their breakfast:)

Mattie’s

It looks cool, and the food is alright. However, it's pretty overpriced, especially for the area it's in. IMO you're mainly just paying for the old-school metal-diner vibe.

Yeah I don't get the hype outside of feeling like I'm living in the 50s for an hour. The food is lackluster imo

Go a block or two back on either side of Matheson & Plaza it’s properly priced for the area.

Another for Mattie’s! Love the omelettes and breakfast bowls.

Seconded. Mattie’s Diner is the old Bound Brook NJ diner building that Matt bought and restored after a hurricane years back. It’s straight NJ/NY vibes and the only place to get a decent Taylor ham egg n cheese sandwich

What's the history on it? I don't remember that being there before.

Here’s a decent article on it from when it first opened over by the music factory! https://www.wsoctv.com/news/matties-diner-serving-up-classic-favorite-in-music/223053811/
After the music factory people chose to build the avidxchange office on the land a few years after that, the diner went into storage until reopening on the Plaza a few years ago with an expanded side room.

Any good diner has an on premise bakery. Many responses here don't have bakeries. Back in the day, it was made from scratch food. Remember the turkey, at Landmark?
Made from scratch? Lol. Not so much anymore, unless you are at the high end.

Mattie’s. The owner is from NJ - if you’re looking for an authentic northeast diner experience, this is the spot.

The diner game here is not strong (native nyer), but learn to love Charlotte's great gems, family restaurants with the 3- or 4-vegetable plate. Vegetables include mac and cheese, banana pudding, stewed apples, collard greens. Awesome stuff.

In your opinion, what would make a good diner?
1
u/Australian1996 21h ago
Good traditional diner food and good prices and no chain unless it’s Waffle House. And decor to me who cares. Don’t mind a little lived in look

Yeah I think that is the challenge of the place not being in NYC. I don't expect to see the statue of Liberty in Charlotte.

Haha that's what I was thinking--"well it's close to a NY diner, but it's not *exactly* like a NY diner..."
Bruh, we ain't in NY. Yeah of course it's not going to be the same. You think I go to San Diego and look for the *perfect* Carolina BBQ spot? lol

Stack’s in Matthews is the best. Only open for breakfast and lunch though.
