Community how to start learning car hacking by myself ?

I am reading the book "The Car Hacker's Handbook". Could you give me more references on that matter ? Are there some goto websites/forum/books/youtube channel ? I'd especially like to have more references on car hacking using bluetooth.

Also, if you have some references (youtube or anything) to expand my car culture for this matter, I would be interested too.

Community Looking for some open source software/scripts to clone ECU DIY

So, I have 2012 Ford Focus which was mechanically running fine until one day ECU gave up. I showed it to three different mechanics and they all came to one conclusion the ECU is the problem.

The main problem is the car wouldn't start. No crank. No start. Before you suggest, it's not fuse, it's not relay That has been diagnosed. Two locations told me the ECU thing.

They told, get the ECU, we will "try" to make it work and it would be 1500$.

Now, the software developer in me, doesn't want to give up on this car.

I was looking to get some ECU or a couple from scrapyard where they sell it for 50 bucks a pop and then find some open source or even cheap softwares to clone the old ECU into the spare ECU.

Is it possible? I am willing to spend around 500$ on this car. No more than that. Let me know if someone has done something similar or have any suggestions? TIA.

Community Anybody here a member of mhhauto?

hello, I'm a disabled person that repairs and flips clusters and has a very keen interest in cars and wanting to learn custom module program, EEPROM, ect. I use a lot of great open source tools for my projects like IPC hammer, or more the well known PCM hammer. I own vcxnano for my SPS2 subscription, tech2win, and it servers as my J2534 wrapper.

I'm very disappointed with SPS2 and will be needing other automotive softwares and other hacking. I've come across mhh auto in web searches but you have to be a member to grab files it appears. I'm aware it cost like 30 bucks to get a registration code and I'm not here to ask for one. I'm just curious how good it is and if anyone actually uses it? 30 bucks is a bit of an investment for me because I'm poor and 30 bucks gets me another junkyard cluster so I wanna be sure if its what it looks like.

Community Holden (Chevrolet) Cruze replacement cluster vin programming

First off apologies if I am using the wrong flair I did not know which one to put it under.

Recently I bought a 2013 holden cruze, everything in the car works fine except the dashboard was not showing the kms of the car, after some investigation with a scan tool, I found out that the cluster had a different vin programmed to it compared to the rest of the car, I was also getting an immobaliser fault code from the cluster. This leads me to believe that the previous owner had replaced the cluster without programming it. I bought this ch341a eeprom programmer and then followed instructions from this video on how to install the right drivers and software. When I tried reading the 24c16 eeprom chip the software only showed ff everywhere which according to my research means there is something wrong, I tried unplugging and replugging, clearning the terminals on the chip and connector and flipping the connector to no avail. The only thing I havent tried is desoldering the chip which I am leaving as a last ditch efffort.

one thing I noticed is that on my programmer's chip it says ch341b instead of ch341a which is odd because everywhere else on the programmer it says ch341a.

any help in resolving my issue would be greatly appreciated.>! !<

Community Does anyone have experience with the Freematics OBD-II UART adapter?

I'm planning to connect my OBD2 Port to an ESP32 to view some deeper statistics on a OLED screen about my car, as my instrument cluster is pretty basic and doesn't even show my coolant temperature. Does anybody have experience with the Freematics OBD-II UART adapter, or even better or cheaper options? How do you guys let your microcontrollers communicate with your car? I hope I'm in the right community to ask that question, thanks in advance!

Community New to this. Help me understand what's possible with my car?

I have a 2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime. I'm still learning about things like ECU and CAN. I have a fair amount of experience with rooting Android devices and using Tasker, so I'd consider myself a hacking enthusiast but not an expert. Comfortable with technical instructions, let's say.

Here are some things I'd love to be able to do with my car:

  • Change the layout of my instrument panel (icons, fonts, placement of information, etc)
  • Get rid of the Toyota sign-in screen/ad when the car starts, without making an account
  • Extend the range of my remote A/C (Primes don't have "remote start" due to their nature as PHEVs), either near my house (e.g. relay) or from miles away (e.g. replace the car SIM with my own and send a signal, maybe via Tasker or a connection with my phone; I don't want to subscribe to Toyota's awful app and telemetry)
  • Get better details about energy usage (the car has MPG, but mixes that with EV use, and I'd like to separate that into HV/ICE use only, while also getting overall kWh usage across both fuel types)
  • Disable the seatbelt startup chime (the official disabling method doesn't work for the startup sound)
  • Set window defrost + feet vent as the default air vents, rather than just feet vent
  • Explore making AndroidAuto connection stronger (I'm convinced it's due to my phone changing cell towers, but I'm still exploring and a car-side solution would be interesting)
  • Change the car charging schedule to "allow during hours of" rather than "start at" or "depart by" (the standard software is such a mess)
  • Disable "takeover" lane-assist steering without disabling wheel warning vibration (i.e. I want it to warn me but not micromanage)
  • Change blinker sound (not volume, but the actual sound)
  • Change voice command button from long-press-for-Google and short-press-for-Toyota to the other way around
  • Disable charger locking (this used to be a standard software option and it was removed in recent models)

What do folks think? Are some of these ideas possible? I'd love recommendations for where to start reading. I checked the Wiki, but haven't been able to find what's possible and what's not (and lot of links are dead).

Thanks for your attention!

Community Where could I obtain some iconic ECU binary dumps?

I've been working on the CAN bus for some time now, built my own wireless sniffer, and wrote a few posts on the CAN bus on my website. But now I'm looking to take things into the ECU realm.

I come from a background in penetration testing, mostly related to web. But I've worked with Ghidra and reverse engineering before.

I'm looking to understand automotive cybersecurity a bit better, so I want to understand ECUs.

I've always been a car guy, so this is why I wanted ECU dumps of some iconic cars, such as the RX-7, Supra Mk4, Mitsubishi Evo, and Subaru Impreza.

Can't really find anything online; I know that most of them predate the CAN bus and that they don't contain many ECUs. But I still wanted some binary dumps of PCMs or so.

Is there a place where I can find binary dumps of iconic cars? Or maybe a go-to place for ECU dumps of any vehicles?

Thank you very much.

Community Getting around hacking my VW T5

A number of questions that I hope you knowledgeable lot can answer. I'm doing an EV conversion on a VW T5 1.9L from 2005. In doing so I'll need to have the canbus hacked. 1st - where's best to take some running vehicle can logs from? I can hack into wiring if needs be but if there's a nicer location elsewhere to get the necessary CAN data that'd be great.

2nd - in doing so I'm thinking of buying a 2nd hand dash and bench testing the setup with this first, at the same time I might upgrade to a MFA display, any idea if a display from a Golf or other VAG vehicle can be retrofitted to the T5 dashpod? I've found videos of new MFA displays being fitted but nothing clear on whether other vehicle MFAs will swap into place.

3rd - I've read the can systems on these vans are "older" that those used on the cars if the same era, what likely differences will I encounter?

4th - If I playback a canlog using savvycan from a similar VW vehicle to my van without the engine running, should I see the dash react in the same way as if it were in the running vehicle?

5th - not sure yet but there'll likely be more!

6th - oh yeah, can I playback a canlog over the ODB2 port? It's a k-line port to the gateway so I suspect not but worth asking...

Thanks, I'm aware these are all things I can answer myself but my time is short and the knowledge here is really great and I'll likely get a much better and clearer answer asking here than I would messing around in the van whilst trying to 2nd guess if an issue is my can log setup or not.

Community Seeking Advice on Certification Path for Automotive Cybersecurity

Hi everyone,

Iā€™m currently working in the automotive cybersecurity field with 2 years of experience. Iā€™m looking to enhance my skill set by pursuing verified certifications that will help me advance in my career.

Iā€™m a bit confused about the best certification path to follow. My current plan is to start with a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certificate at the basic level, but Iā€™m open to other suggestions if there are more relevant certifications for this field.

I would really appreciate any advice on the right flow of certifications for someone in automotive cybersecurity. Your insights will be a big help in guiding me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Community MHH Auto Legit? Happy to pay.

I recently got a mid-2000's Mercedes as a project car. Trying to get a copy of Xentry to actually communicate with the car and clear out codes as I fix stuff.

Seems like MHH auto has a lot of aio Xentry files. Is that place legit, and does anyone have any experience becoming am member and installing Xentry? Just trying to get this thing sorted out so I can get this car back on the road. I think it'd be a lot of fun to push some of the sensors and diagnostics with the software, as I hear that people have great success reprogramming Mercedes cars to do custom functions.

And no, I'm not asking for a download link. Just trying to figure out if it's a legit place before sending them $$$.

Community Beginner trying to learn about ECU coding and more.

Hi, I'm a software engineer student with a passion for cars and lately I've been interested in learning how car ECUs work and are coded. I've been surfing the internet trying to find some good documentation but didn't manage to find anything good so far. I would like to start from VAG ECU coding since I own an Audi. Does anyone have any good tips on what to search and where to start? Thanks in advance.

Community Foggy windshield

s

Hi all! Once in a while it gets sunny here in Sweden and when driving against the sunlight I noticed that I have this permanent pattern of ā€œleopard stainsā€ on my windshield (inside). The car is relatively new and AC doesnā€™t really help to solve it. Really annoying to drive like that. I tried to wipe it with a windscreen spray but didnā€™t really help. Do you have any suggestion on how to remove it? I noticed it that it sort of goes away when I scratch it with my nail (the attempt is visible in the upper part of the windshield). What could that be? Any ideas?
