Come Check Out The CSUN Discord

Covid has been hard on all of us. Some more than others. It has been a year of staying inside and behind a camera. No socializing on campus, no hanging out and getting boba. The effects of covid-19 has been studied worldwide, and I am not just talking about getting the virus itself but the consequences of the isolated living we have had for so long now.

We at the CSUN Discord are trying to help students to cope with the new reality we are living in while the world adjusts to dealing with the multiple strains of Covid being fought against.

Come hang out and make some new friends. Here you can chat, socialize, get help with homework, hear the latest about CSUN and much more. We also have partnered with several clubs for advertising so you can see all there events being hosted all in one place.

Hope to see you soon: https://discord.gg/t4Mw8m3

When you join the server make sure to type your Major, Current Year(Freshman, Junior, ect) and whether you live on campus or not. The mod team will then let you see the rest of the channels.

I’ve been searching for months for retail, fast food, customer service jobs so I can afford to pay for my rent, since financial aid didn’t cover cost of living expenses for me. Has anyone been having similar issues? Anyways if anyone who is in the northridge area has a job that is currently hiring new workers, please lmk!!

HSCI 331 Prof Valdez

Professor Valdez is honestly one of the worst professors I’ve ever had in my life. Super condescending and rude and from what I’ve heard makes students feel bad just for asking questions. Has this ridiculous rule about using laptops or iPads in class so we only can use notebooks and a pen. Assigns way too much work for a three unit lower division class and thinks way too highly of herself. I passed her class and thank god I did cause I don’t think I’d have the patience to retake her and it’s crazy how she’s the only professor for this one class that’s required for public health. Does anyone else have any negative experiences with her?

Any recommended hotels around CSUN for guests at the Soraya?

Not a student at CSUN but I (24F) wanna attend a concert at the Soraya and not sure where to stay around thats safe to stay at night time, like it might end at 10 at night. I'm planning to take public transportation there but stay the night in the area.

Would any of you guys have recommendations of places to stay around the area? + Are ubers common and easy to get in this area since its a commuter school?

Professor never updated my final grade.

Basically, I have a C but it should be an A because she missed 60 points (she said she would update but never did). Who do I complain to if this is a psychology professor? Scared to email the wrong person.

Panicking about What to expect

Where should I start? I am currently in my senior year and on the path to graduating in Fall 2026. But, it's hard for me to try and find jobs that align with my major which is Early Childhood Education (Development). I hold an associate's degree in my major, but I have yet to secure a job related to it. Despite applying to countless positions, I haven’t been given the opportunity to showcase my potential. It is frustrating to be deeply committed to a major I love while facing uncertainty about my future after graduation. I am determined to find a way to leverage my skills and education in the job market.

Has anyone faced this issue before? I would appreciate hearing your experiences and how you managed to resolve it. Your insights could be really helpful!

Get A US Passport & Global Entry

For those who are interested in traveling to another country during spring break, get both of the following:

-US Passport Booklet (Valid for 10 years) -Global Entry with TSA Pre-Check (Valid for 5 years)

I recommend getting an expedited US Passport Booklet that will cost you $247. It’s a great way to ensure that you get your passport fast and easy. Also, if you hate waiting in long TSA and Customs lines, get the Global Entry with TSA Pre-Check for $120. It’ll save you the headache of having to wait in those lines and make it to your flight on time.

In total, those two things will cost you a total of $367. As someone who has both of these, traveling internationally has been a breeze for me going and coming back. I would start in the beginning of January and getting it done by the end of January to ensure that you’ll be set for Spring Break which will start from March 15th-23rd.

Here’s the website for US Passports: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/apply-in-person.html#Step%20Seven

Here’s the website for Global Entry with TSA Pre-Check: https://ttp.dhs.gov

Trust me, if you have money to spend on entertainment (however you define it) then you should put that money towards these two things.

Thinking of changing majors.

Hi all, I’m currently a freshman majoring in Kinesiology and I thought about switching my major since I find Kinesiology a bit difficult and boring. I’m thinking of switching to psychology or Anthropology. Anyone ever take these majors?

Do you know why IESC sent emails about returning to the US by 18th Jan for international travels? Will it be a problem if i return on 21st Jan, the day my class starts?

I am an international student and I have completed my first semester here. For the semester break, i have returned to my country. I have booked both way tickets back in September since i was homesick. That time i saw that the ticket on 21st Jan was cheaper and I wasn’t sure if i’d have my classes on 21st January so I booked the return ticket on that day. Please be aware that my flight is over 32 hours long with long transit in between. Ever since I saw the email from IESC that they’re strongly recommending us to return by 18th January(sent in December), I have been panicking. Even now when i’m at home finally, i still can’t get rid of my anxiety. I have contacted Emirates and they replied that I’d need to pay around 2k USD for rescheduling since the flight prices are too high now. This is too much for my family as they’d have to pay for my tuition, rent, insurance and 2 months rent which are a huge amount to them already(i come from a third world country). What to do now? Do you think i might be deported for late arrival and not following IESC’s recommendations? Please help!

I have travel signature on my i20 by my DSO, have valid visa, GPA 4 on my first semester and have never participated in anything illegal, or any kind of off campus jobs.

what CAD software do ME Design classes use? -- Mechanical Engineering questions.

I could not find any official resources that could verify it was AutoCAD, Fusion 360, both or other and I can't find anything in the descriptions of these classes:

ME 101/L. Introduction to Mechanical Engineering and Lab (1/1)

ME 186/L. Mechanical Design I and Lab (1/1)

ME 286. Mechanical Design II (2)

Online I've found that students at Pierce College use those and I know Pierce is the clearest Pipeline to CSUN so I assume a lot of their software would overlap but I am hoping someone can confirm or deny.

Thank you!

Carpool Spring Semester

Gonna be driving to northridge from claremont every Monday and Tuesday. I would like to cut down on my cost of transportation via carpooling: so if you’re along the way, have classes on these days, and this suits your needs too—message me and maybe we can work something out! My classes are from 4-6:45 pm. I plan to leave early in the day, and can stay in the library until close if necessary.

Has anyone had a photography class with Niku Kashef?

I got this class before the professor was posted since it aligned with my schedule but looking at the rate my professor after knowing who it is makes me worried. The most recent ones are low reviews and even a lot of the good ones mention this teacher is a bit emotional and not exactly friendly (if I remember correctly).

If anyone has taken a class with her please let me know how it went , any advice, or really anything I should know. Thanks :)

Madator Motivation

I’m sharing this story because maybe this will help someone the next time, someone tells them that their path doesn’t matter. Warning: I apologize in advance for this long post.

I started my freshman year when I was 22 years old. I took four years off right after graduating high school to work and travel. When I decided that I wanted to attend a university, some people told me that I wasn’t gonna get accepted and just go towards the community college route. Still, I applied and got into several CSUs, ended up choosing CSUN.

I was also fortunate enough to get a spot in the university apartments, as well as being classified as a second year, due to my college credits that I had in high school. I did all of this as a first generation college student and while being independent and working. I also joined three co-ed fraternities, a social fraternity, elected to a student government board position and I worked as a research assistant. Also, for those considering joining student clubs/orgs and/or Greek life, let me add that it is very possible and doable because I’m proof that I did it and although there were some people that were very ageist against a non-traditional student like myself, I still pledged and became a member of my respective organizations. I graduated in four years (2015-2018) at the age of 25 as a double major and I still had a social life. Three years later, I decided to go to graduate school while working a full-time job at the age of 28. I graduated from my first master’s program three years later (2021-2024) at the age of 30 and I’m currently in my second master’s program at the age of 31, set to complete at the end of fall 2025, walking at the end of spring 2026 at the age of 32.

I say all of this because no one can tell you what your path and future should be. If I would’ve listened to the people that tried to detour me from my goals and dreams, I would not be where I am today. It doesn’t matter what age you choose to go to school to get an education, all that matters is how you finish your degree. I love how I’m blessed with a full-time job, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average in my program and being able to travel the world, as well as financially building my accounts.

Whatever trial or hardship you may be facing throughout 2024, you do not have to continue it into 2025. I know this year may have been hard for some of us but the one thing I learned is knowing how to pick myself up, dust off the dirt and keep continuing to fight through those trials. Whether if it’s something professional or personal you may be going through, have a core circle of authentic friends who will help you get back up and on the path to your journey.

You got this my fellow Matador. I believe in you and you will get to the finish line!!!!

Need major advice!!

I’m an incoming accountancy major for the 2025-26 school year. Are there any business/finance/accountancy majors on here? How is your experience with the education? Is CSUN worth it for business majors?

Professor from Psy150 never graded final

  • EDIT: The professor messaged me back! TYSM for yall help!*

So yesterday grades were due. Since the professor is in our discord group along with my classmates, the professor let everyone aware that the final should be graded by 12/20. However, yesterday grades were due. And many people were confused that they failed the class despite turning in everything. Long story short, the professor never graded the final and gave everyone an F. Is there anyway we can contact someone and let someone aware of this matter. Everyone either did the alternative assignment or got 25/25 on survey credits.

How can I check my grades if the classes have been removed from my canvas?

Portal Grades Erro

I had an A in this class after all grades were inputted into Canvas, but now I check my portal grades it says I have a C. This professor I have responds to no emails students send and makes countless errors on the HWs and Exams. We all thought this was trolling us because of how oblivious he was. I emailed the department, do you think they will look into this?

So if I get a C- for this class do I still pass?

I know I passed technically but will it allow me to take the next course since this one was a prerequisite? I’m just confused if it’s like any C or just C & C+
